That happens to me a lot at gigs where I really get into it.

I think he must've picked the same way i do- the side of my pinky and cuticle of middle finger slide over the strings ahead of the pic. Eventually flays the skin off. I played a 3 song set at a club last fall and didn't notice till I was done that the pick and guitar were sprayed.......
