  • the 2nd song is called snatches

  • search it on youtube u will get it!

  • guys i found the name of the second song is called snatches night song for the white rabbit.

  • @theniceone223 Hi, thanks a million! I found the tune in another video... but the title is just "Snatches." "Night Song for the White Rabbit" is another piece. Anyone know who wrote "Snatches" or where it came from?

  • @adamgswanson It was written by him! He recorded it several times in the mid 70s. Paul Asaro even recorded it the 90s. In his Wellstood's words, "its named after a town in Mississippi." ...I think we all know what he's actually referring to, though. :)

  • @wilscool Oh my gosh! Has anyone written it down? "Night Song for the White Rabbit" is a separate piece, right? "Snatches" is the name of the one in this video.

  • @adamgswanson Paul Asaro told me he wrote out a manuscript to "Snatches", but hasn't seen it in years. "Night Song for the White Rabbit" is another Wellstood composition. I am pretty sure he just made it up on the spot. The intro is used in his version of "Superstar" (a modern pop song by the Carpenters), but the rest of the piece is just a blues featuring quotes from other pieces.

  • Thanks for the post. Wellstood was a personal hero. Say, are you that great young ragtime-playing guy? I'd like to see you playing more stride, which for me is a Lamborghini to ragtime's Ford. A Ford'll get you there, but you'll arrive happier in a Lamborghini. (Well, me, anyway.)

  • Thanks for posting! Fabulous to hear the great man in interview.

  • Wow, Will! That's great to know. I wish I could learn the thing! See you soon.

  • In reading Dick Wellstood's biography "Giant Strides", I learned that the mystery piece is indeed a Wellstood original called "Snatches." Good stuff!

  • it must have been awesome to have met James P. in person! :)

  • Truly brilliant video and great version of Carolina Shout! It is great they got closeups of his right hand, because that's where the real action is! Sure, the left hand moves around a lot, but (in my opinion as a pianist) it's harder to figure out what the right hand's doing.

I am not familiar with the second tune either, but it might be something that Wellstood himself wrote... I wouldn't be surprised. Parts of it sound like something composed by James P. Johnson, while other parts don't.

  • No idea what the second song is but I would love to see more of that doc.

  • Awesome video, Adam! Max gave me a copy of this DVD when I went to PEI last July, and I swear I have watched it a dozen times. Good stuff.
