I remember that evening ín march 2011 going out with my dog and the moon was soo scaringly close to earth, I will never forget it. Everybody I told about it thought I was crazy because nobody of my folks saw it. :(
this is beautiful! lol i saw a big full moon one day but it looks titchy compared to this one...... okay maybe mine wasnt big but it look larger than usual. :P
@SimSlikVIm This was a special event when the moon was closest to the earth for like 18years, so it looked extra big, I was surprised myself as it appeared above the horizon, You are right about the moon always looking bigger as it rises, its some kind of scientific optical effect, I think a moon rise is cooler than a sun rise, but usually low cloud gets in the way of seeing it.
I remember watching it rise as I just looked around the corner, and there was a red dot on the horizon, didn't look like a light so I stayed and looked, acouple seconds later. There it was.
Ahhhhh....fresh memories...not...i hated this stupid moon...cause it cause hella random ass shit in the world...like it changed the weather to be all bipolar.
refraction and scatering of the light as it passes through that much more air. As the lightsource rises the light passes through less air so we see a clearer image. Same thing hapens to the sun, that's why we get so many colors in the sky at sunrise and sunset.
Its a lovely and atmospheric video - but there's no magnification of the moon via the atmosphere though - it's apparent size is an optical illusion caused by the context of the horizon and in this case, enhanced by the telephoto. Even a Super-moon at its perigee is only a fraction of a percent bigger to the eye when measured in radians! Doesn't stop it form appearing huge and beautiful! Can we try to do some background music for this?
@Devilchild7139 Of course the moon can appear bigger - up to 25% bigger - since it has an eliptical orbit around Earth varying from approx 180,000 miles up to around 230,000 miles. The telephoto lens factor only comes into play if you have no other reference points to relate it to. In this video, as the moon rises higher into the sky it is becoming smaller since it is also moving further away from the filmed location as its azimuth changes.
Wow that looks really beautiful....hey, why is my tail twitchinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I've only caught the moon twice in my life rising with JUST the right amount of moisture to act like a magnifying glass, but it was amazing indeed. Thanks for the video!!!
@NJBeemaster I too have only seen this twice. I have photos of it setting here on Maui in the early am. It was just as beautiful, with palm trees in the foreground and islands in the background. I've also seen it appear glowing, round and orange during a total lunar eclipse in Washington. Great video.
I was hanging out with friends that night. we all watched the moon rising, it was pretty big on the east coast of America but not this big. Nice video
@IrishmanNH Its strange how it looks a different size from different locations, we need a Geek to come up with an explanation. It was 9 kilometres from where I was standing, to the ridge where the moon rises, maybe thats a factor.
The moon was like this back in 1997 or 1998, I'm not sure exactly when it was but it looked amazing, I live in Scotland and I was coming back from work when i saw it, I had never seen the moon so big before and i've never forgot it
Wha...what? I don't understand. Is this real? How can this even be possible and why hasn't there been more about this?! It's like a major thing for humanity. @_@
This is the only video on youtube where the cameraman actually understands to use a background object to demonstrate the size of a super moon. I remember seeing a super moon 25 years ago where it was bigger than a house as it rose up. It's like being on an alien planet. I missed it this year because I overslept. When I got up at 3 AM the moon had already moved back. You only really see a super moon as it comes up on the horizon.
How beautiful! Even though we were supposed to be able to see it in Newfoundland very clearly, it was snowing so it was too cloudy to see, which was sad.
This was great, shame you didn't have a tripod the shakiness spoils it a bit. I used to live near there you picked a good spot to film. To answer matycee both the Earth and the Moon are moving. This was filmed facing north as the road you see is the A27 that runs east-west along the South coast.
So glad someone had a good video of this! Friday here in Swansea was cloud free, Saturday - cloud! Will the moon stay big for a while or is it all over now?
lovely vid, actually noticed that the moon is as close as it is going to get for 20 years so my daughter will be 22 before she can point at it like she did last night.
stunning vid mate . Well done. If one stares just at the bottom of the moon as it's just coming up, the illusion of the Earth moving instead can be experienced(imagined). Really cool, thanks! It's cloudy here in Portland, OR....as usual.
well, both obviously. but pretty sure the moon moves quicker around the earth than the earth is spinning. although, now that i'm thinking about it...the speed at which the sun appears to set or rise...that seems plenty close enough to the speed that moon does in fact set and rise. still, since we're ON the earth, i doubt we could detect IT moving relative to ANOTHER moving body, like the moon. Versus a still(though rotating) body like the sun. Ok i need a drink
@Wonkabar007 and @matycee, it is the Earth which is moving. We just don't feel it because we're on it. Similarly, the sun doesn't rise. We are simply turning towards it.
That's not the moon.. that is the bald headed man in the Monty Python cartoons.. :) Well, at least it looked like it in the beginning.. what a magnificent sight it turned out to be, though.. !! :)
