Men and women with vision are seldom listened to during their lifetimes.Truth speakers are shunned but evil bastards like Limbaugh have millions of followers being led to destruction by money mad evil men.
Thanks a lot for sharing this beautiful song and making such a strong video to get the message across! Gil Scott Heron is one of my heroes. I don't know how he felt about pres.Obama, and this piece of music was written before he was around, so I had some doubts about adding his pictures. But it does not harm the overall message :). Thanks and greetings from The Netherlands.
It is evident that we get what we wish for. If GOD is GOD, then Unconditional Love (UCL) is the Basis of All Creation. UCL, being "Unconditional", can't say "NO". "Ask, and ye shall receive"... When society is "socially conditioned" by those who know how to program people to achieve their own agendas, then sadly, it is the conditioning that does the dreaming (children dreaming of being soldiers). Every "game" is allowed. When we all wake up, and step up and dream Life-Affirmatively, it will be.
Thanks for posting this video. And i appreciate the fact that you are from the USA, it is positive boost, even gigantic propaganda can't annihilate human spirit!
Rest in peace, Gil Scott Heron. You were an icon who paved the way for many poets, and modern rap(not the shit on the radio). If a poet, soul/jazz artist or anyone who belongs to part of the movement which is hip hop doesn't know of your legacy then they need to learn to be able to truly continue in their craft.
I spent a decade and a half doing audio for live performances in Central California, and one of the first gigs I ever worked was in 1982/3 for a local community radio station doing sound and a live broadcast of Gil Scott-Heron @ Soledad prison. Gil Scott-Heron was a tireless worker for social justice and DID NOT forget his brothers imprisoned in America’s gulags.
Thank you... Met him in Berkeley Ca. I was a 1970 first year student ( a So. Cal white girl from Whittier Ca. Nixon home town...ahhhh). Changed me forever...Because of that time, (I drove a 1961 VW 21 window micro bus. Saw your blue one. Mine red and off white)...I learned about life from another's eyes and voice. Been pulling out my lp's and have been burning them to cd...these young people have no idea what our "then" has done for their "now".
THE WORDS are the most important thing here. Gil Scott-Heron's work is muffled by the music. This piece should be revised to give THE IDEAS prominence.
I know about this music because of my Grandfather. He has had made me listen to Mr.Gil Scott-Heron's music because he said it's deep and I could learn something.I'm almost 20 now and I so appreciate this.I love how he shows the relationship between the "monetary and the military".....
I also love his song 'Home is where The Hatred Is' and I believe that song is saying that "home" is his arm and the needle marks heal his broken heart,so I'm thinking Home is The Heroin.....
While I totally understand the idea that "there's no profit in peace", it's actually not true. War destroys wealth, trade increases it. In peacetime, the way human beings interact with eachother is through peaceful trade. There is MORE profit in peace, there just wouldn't be any profit in making bombs. Never ending war is an unfair and immoral way to make money. If there were world peace the human race would quickly be wealthier than it ever was.
@rescuemay yes your correct, but the hogs at the trough wouldn't get to eat all they want and that's the problem with the monetary and military industrial complexes wouldn't starve, but anytime they have to relinquish wealth its peaceful to us but these two establishment entities profit from war by funding and selling to both sides. While these old men send our youth to their death and/or deep life long traumas. War can be necessary, but for the most part in the last 50yrs that isn't the case.
I love Gil Scott-Heron and thought I had all of his albums, but never heard this song. He is a genius - a prophet. His words will live on far beyond all of us.
my dad showed me this when i was 11 years old about 11 years ago! One of the best songs a father can show his young son- "THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH PEACE IS WE CANT MAKE ANY MONEY OFF IT"
Just when I think I have heard the best Gil Scott Heron ever, I discover a new gem from this genius of verse and song. Ribeye280 your video is like the jewler's cut of a precious gem. Before it was just a misshaped lump of colored glass filled with great potential--now it is a sparkling and eye-catching jewel. Good job and nicely done!
Yes . . Gil-Scott was one of the original rapper poets. Gil has always spoken the truth, a true hero of our time . .. his words have inspired many that have followed. . . and he's going strong!
Work for Peace off of the album Spirits, the song inspired me to search out some photo's on flickr and other public photo sites to find the right fit for my vision of how this music video should look. I use my own photo's most of the time but the content on this one wasn't in my photo library as you can well imagine.
hey rib...tks so much for your kindness. Curious though...is that your voice?? I mean we are talking major Barry White...I am a former classical pianist and most songs are not what I call "coming from the uterus".Beautiful...perfect and the text? PRICELESS. Brilliant. You should go to LA ... You beat every and all of the new comers/raps with no voice. Peace out man. Will get the CD 2morrow.
No. Gil Scott-Heron was one of the fathers of rap as we know it today. (it mutated from urban beat poets like him of the 60's and 70's, with jazz beat's most generally)

@theunsilentrevolutio I'm quite happy with Gil not being mainstream, it's brilliant when you find someone else who likes listening to him, but it's also brilliant to know he's a kind of hidden gem

Why do many people appreciate their works AFTER they leave the Earth when they should show it DURING their time here on this planet?

Yes but wise men prefer it because they realize it's more important to be alive than rich.
Peace of mind is even more important. If you attain it you'll be happy even in the absence of money.

I was born on election day 1952 and the world has been thus for going on 59 years.
Why, I ask you, was this prophet not recognized nationally as a poet laureate?
