Funakoshi studied this kata for 9 years, does anyone think that is all he came up with in that time. I think all early jananese dojo were McDojo. Get these guys black belts and get the system out there. Oh and if anyone asks what Kata means, this is what you show them. They wont question you as YOU ARE SENSEI and no one questions sensei. And so it goes on. Only thing is some of us do not accept your rubbish any longer. The old masters would be spinning in their graves.
Bunkai is all over the place nowadays but I enjoyed doing kata many moons ago, I 'm sure the likes of Imura, kase, Enode could put away an attacker no problem, it's because they were in it for the right reasons too. It's a long story.
how come in most Kata bunkai the attacker has to be a traditional karateka who attacks you?in the real world its the essence of the technique that is applied in a free for all fight, a real fight will never be done in 'basic' form. so the bunkai wont be ;basic ' either.
@shihanmac As all arts and sciences, the study is theoretical and it must be applied in real life circumstances with different aspects and from another angle. But the basic core knowledge is the same as the theoretical study. The study of kata, bunkai and its applications can never be applied as they are identically in a real fight. But the technique behind it can be applied with slight or drastic [according to the circumstances] changes, but the basic core movements and techniques are there.
Very good, I would call this :kata kumite" rather than bunkai tho' as this is defence against karate techniques/people. This kata was developed for close quarter defence against non-martialartists imho.
also acient time...kung fu or karate guy would learn all kata, then specailize in one...his perferred way of fighting....like big guys aren't going to be Jion but they would know how to defend againest it....they may choose a kata with more base and hand power.
I disagree... thousands of repetitions of a kata will give you nothing... that's just dancing. The study of the kata is not the mindless repetition of a pattern.
Actually, you have to step out of the kata to understand it, and to learn from it.
Hello. I don't know which comment you are responding to, but I definitely don't feel that kata should be mindless repetition, and it is CERTAINLY not a dance. Maybe I didn't make my point well, but I assure you, if someone can come up with a bunkai that helps him, I'm all for it. And if I feel it can help me, I'll add it to my routine. I love to hear, and practice, different bunkai ideas for kata. I train for real life survival, not sport. I'm open to any ideas. Thanks for the response. Oss
@njtr i aree bro. thats one of my favorite katas and i must say that the bunkai is extremely complictated. shotokan teaches for survival, depending on the instructor though.
@brasshandmartialarts Motobu sensei...practiced jus Tekki...then off of that ,practiced kumite, found in Tekki....trains distance etc....in the old kung fu days...each kata is a style of its own...many ancient ones, jus knew a few kata...and praticed them religously....that is the way ,it was meant to be learned....myself I do Tekki at least 100 times a day, evryday.and thats nothing.=)
what i like about this video is that for the student it shows the techiques being used as they were intended.Every martial arts governing body should do similar videos for every Kata or pattern.A lot of the time you 're just going through the motions not thinking about the fact that the techniques are actually designed for a reason but the mindset can easily sli[p into "punch, punch ,block, block, punch, bow the end.

I am with you. Funakoshi Sensei said something similar to that.

I am afraid you are incorrect as regards the kata. It isnt for "when a person cant move."
Tekki is naihanchi which was thought at one time to be one kata.
This video is not the reason for that kata.
Direct evidence cant be given as we cant go back in time but a detailed study does show the correct use of naihanchi/ tekki.

Be carefull of the blind following the blind.
Many techniques in kata had a specific use and some tried to adapt the technique to another use to save time in practice.
Others put uses to kata that look good in a dojo but are useless in the street.
