  • das beste Verständnis von Bach-Musikgedanken )))

  • Amazing. How do you play with your feet without seeing the pedals?

  • This is absolute one of my favorites by Bach! This piece is fantastic in harmony and style and Aarnoud plays this extremely well !!

  • Wonderful, wonderful.

And magic, how mankind is able to perform a Godly breath, although there are "only" a lot of pipes, just pipes :-)

  • @saxXxas I don't know if your comment was actually beautiful or if it was that it included music, God, organs and Bach all in one? Either, I liked it ;D

  • Is this organ for sale?

  • @FlameOfAnor17

    no sorry

  • this must be a wonderful feeling: sitting in the empty church and playing these divine pieces of music

  • 13 dislikes? how can one dislike Bach? :o0

  • Quel bonheur !!! BRAVO !

  • swag

  • fantastic playing!

  • woah-so many pedals

  • Bravissimo!

  • The organ is truly the greatest instrument.

  • Oh... I wish i could listen to that, alone, with a real organ.

  • Bach art Is Forever!.

  • This is a wonderfully precise AND musical performance. When you add that to the quality and tone of the organ, and the quality of the recording, it makes for something truly magnificent. Oh yeah, and did I mention the perfect registration? Dis baaie goed, ek se vir U! Thanks for taking the time to make this recording.

  • Absolutely fabulous. Never heard it better. A marvelous, responsive instrument and dazzling footwork. Bravo!

  • @severus1331

  • that's really hard!

  • GEIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fantastic.

  • thank you! great performance! Your interpretation shows what is so exciting in a piece which is made up of essentially one motif.

  • thank you! great performance!

  • Wow! Fast!

Love your surprising, refreshing added ornaments.

Should have continued the trill at 1:19 for the whole note. (I do. It's wortheffort.)

At 4:10, HOLD thoseighth notes for FULL value to contrast with the running pedal notes. Shortening them makes them sound like continuing sixteenth notes.

    Wonderful, exuberant performance!

  • VERY nice

  • the performance takes away the heaviness which normally is heard ,our time has speed and one can hear Bach is of all times..enjoyable ..

  • The Fuge.... please....!

  • Viel zu schnell!!!!!!

  • What a great performance! Just amazing. It took me 3 months of daily practice to get this down perfectly and yet it sounds a bit vague, but yours is just... "awesome"

  • I must say, your playing skills have given me the chills... I tried to play this piece perfectly about a year ago and it took me a year to accomplish it... Great performance, I am extremely impressed!

  • Why is this movement always played in the softest, most muffled registration imaginable?

  • OMG ITS DDR PIANO!!!!! AAHHHHHHHHHHH!! SO INSANE!

  • Thank you for share this great music!

  • The more i listen to your performance the more i like it; it is masterful, Mr. DeGroen.. One other thing, i notice in all the commentary here (I have read all 211 comments) no one mentions the great Karl Richter. That would be almost disturbing if it weren't so glaringly ridiculous

  • @eeiiiinn

Can't a performance be appreciated on its own? Every single video of Bach's organ works I see, there's at least one comment gushing over how much Richter was better, or Richter's recording is really their favorite, and so forth.

  • @Siegerzkranz

I think what i meant was that (at the time i left my comment) there was already much commentary making comparisons to other fantastic interpreters, but that not one of them had mentioned Richter

  • @ doctorabby: Agreed. A little faster than i prefer. But an incredible performance nonetheless

  • more videos please!!! great performance

  • Excellent performance, thanks for posting! I have to admit that it was a little faster than I prefer, nonetheless excellent!

  • My opinion, it's not too fast. It's perfect for this sound. Furthermore, the sound is great too. My sincere gratitude for the moments of bliss.

  • Perfect tempo. Wonderful execution. Bravo!

  • @Tajoumaru perfect tempo for 2010 perhaps, perfect tempo for youtube and sportscars and reality television and segway scooters and wireless networking and jet plane travel and pharmaceuticals and housepets and summer homes and iphones and reading history

  • very fast but ...wow!!! good job m8.. tyvm

  • Einfach herrlich wie die stimmen miteinander

Kommunizieren . Das Stück sagt einfach was

  • It's too fast, for me...anyway very good execution..

  • Wunderbar!

  • Very Good!

  • Heerlijk dat tempo !!!

  • Fascinante!

  • Step back I'm going to put all my anger out on this piece

  • I hang from 100ft poles and work on live 100kV + powerlines, I can rebuild any engine, I can drop anything at 400+ yds, I can beat the hell out of several men at once, I've raised a beautiful family and juggle all kinds of things at once.... but DAMN! I can even begin to do this! You sir are my Hero!

  • Fantastic piece and a wonderful performance. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

  • All of a sudden I feel like I'm a latin mass.

  • Sorry, I was drunk when I posted that stupidness, and I feel quite embarrassed and ashamed right now.

However, neither Toccatas or any other piece of music should be performed primarily as a way of showing off one's technical abilities.

The tempo here should be a little bit more relaxed, like towards the upper end of andante, so that situations like the unnecessary slowdown in the 4th bar wouldn't occur.

And that trill at the beginning of the 18th bar is simply pretentious.

  • 2:11 - there's no thriller there! you're just a pretentious little byatch with too much skill and absolutely no feeling. my great...greatgrandpa is feeling unrestful in his grave because of you!

  • @theratsingers: Shut your big mouth up if you don't know what you're talking about.

  • @theratsingers

You mean "trill", and a toccata is meant to be performed to the greatest ability of the player, which means that improvisations and embellishments are certainly not forbidden (if anything, they're encouraged).

Very well done, Mr. de Groen.

  • 2:11 - WHERE DID YOU SEE THAT F****** THRILLER?!?!? YOU CAN STUFF ALL YOUR TALENT INTO AN ASSES ARSE.

YOU CAN'T READ THE SCORE AS J.S. WROTE IT!!!

  • E. Power Biggs never recorded BWV 538 on his Flentrop organ... but I would imagine it would have sounded something like this. Crisp performance on a wonderful instrument.

  • I know know that organ is the most hardcore keyed instrument. YOU ARE AWESOME. brought tears to my eyes.

  • Thank,s Mister, I enjoy and like Yours oieces, You play verywell, I love Your music friendly Jacques

  • Great interpretation!!!

  • Wow. Holy crap he's playing with his hands and his feet at the same time... talk about coordination.

  • @dochollideh: How do you know this has nothing to do with Bach? It is a fact that Bach was able to play the pedals faster than anyone could play the manuals.

That tells me he was a virtuoso and a Toccata like this one is an outstanding opportunity to show of....

  • I think he plays this too fast.

  • @phillyorganist2010: I think he plays too slow.

  • @cpeb14 PERFECTempo!

Fast but not too fast so that one does not appreciate the notes.

Amazing watching him play. I am always looking at the pedals.

  • Where is the fugue?

    Can't find the fugue!

Now I must play it - I'll probably hurt myself.

    It will be YOUR fault.

  • @robertgift ummmm... The title says Toccata in d minor... as in... There is no fugue... Sorry to dissapoint =(

  • @perdy128 The Dorian Fugue is the first I learned of this Toccata and Fugue in D minor. I actually like the fugue better than the toccata.

Wonderful to hear this again. And now I must go to the piano and play the fugue and hum the pedal - not a pretty sound.

  • Wow! Fast and energetic!

Trill at 1:18 should be continued duration of that note.

No reed in the pedal if none in the manuals.

    Fantastic.

  • @robertgift: why should the trill at 1:18 be continued? Why is a reed in the pedals forbidden if there isn't any reed in the manuals? Please explain...!

  • @cpeb14 Wonderful to hear this again!

Why cease the trill when the note continues?

Much more thrilling if the trill continues as the tenor and then alto also join in in their parallel movements. More difficult but worth it.

Why would you have one line augmented with a reed while none of the others have a reed? It is unbalanced.

  • Bach perfected musical composition.

  • this organ piece is very similar to his other fuges, but bach's composure is still one of the best.

  • That fucked js bach, he were crazy!

Those times when the good music did exist

  • Wow what a performance and interpretation!!!!

    wo,

  • Marvellous.

  • Bravo!!

  • I love the beginning part with the pedals the best. This piece sounds great with subwoofers!

  • What Beast!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful! Bach's music is everlasting.

  • Fantastic performance!

  • Am I just seeing things? Or is the top set of manuals playing along when he plays the middle set and pedals?

  • yes its called a tracker organ, the swell is coupled to the pedals, so therefore when he plays the pedals the lower keys on the top manual move

  • ohh ok thanks!

  • Swell? I don't think this organ has Schwellwerk, I think it's Oberwerk or Brustwerk.

  • ein hauptwerk, ruckpositiv und brustwerk.

  • fast but very very nice..ty Aarnoud..regards from Hamburg Germany

  • Wonderful exuberantempo!

    Perfect view!

At 1:19, why not play the entire whole note trill?

At 4:10, I hold the two manual quarter notes for full value - not shorten them and create a small break.

Would love to hear your performance of the fugue.

Thank you for posting this, Aarnoud.

Wonderful way to start the day.

  • This is my favorite Bach piece! I love it!! Thank you so much for posting this and it's hard to find this composition.

  • Corre que se las pela. ¿Le pagaban por termminar antes?

  • I love the tempo he uses. And same goes for the organ, wonderful sound

  • now days people love to to express thier thier opinion in every matter , and the problem they say thier opinion about things they dont understand at all....

for who dont know,Bach is hard to play and this Toccata is really hard to play !!

you played this Toccata in a as it should be,which is Marvelous,Bravo !!!

  • so great

  • WOW Echt toll!!! Genial! 5*

  • Only one complaint.... why didn't he record the beautiful fugue which follows or if he did, why not post it?

Otherwise, spell binding performance. Brisk tempo done well.

  • Whoa Nellie! Whoa!

Good work, but played twice too fast. Unfortunate.

  • what?

  • I've heard about 5 different organist play that piece and they all play it the same speed. Our friend here plays it about twice faster than the other 5.

Perhaps the other 5 organists were playing it too slow :P

  • Bravo....excellent played

  • Wonderfully played. Just an observation, but this piece bears a faint resemblance to BWV 540.

  • Bravo..

  • I Couldn't ask for a better performance!

    5/5

  • Sehr schon. Wirklich.....

  • Excellent playing on a first-class organ.

  • Comment removed

  • Mind-blasting piece, played perfectly, what more can I ask

  • Such skill, love this, I listen to it a lot =)

  • COngratulations! This is simply SUBERB! The organ is really the king of musical instruments. Organists are the musicians of the musicians.

  • Yes! Best version on youtube, also sound.

I don't understand how it is possible to learn to play this, but it obviously is.

  • i like your style ;0)

  • well if gong to listn to this song every day might as well say how much I opreciate the art and passion of ths mans abllty

  • You play fantastically.

Saludos!!!

  • Comment removed

  • What an awesome piece! Well done.

Boh...

Pazzesco. Potessi sapere suonare come lui...

  • excellent...!

    5*

  • just.. overwhelming

  • better foot work than Ronaldo

  • I wonder if Aarnoud has considered posting the associated fugue (bwv 538)? I think he'd do a fine job with it.

    Gene

  • This is the fugue, the second part of BWV 538. The Toccata is the first part, which is a slower melodic work.

    This is an excellent performance.

  • this is actually the toccata, the first part :)

  • I stand corrected. I actually have a CD of a local artist playing them in reverse order and mislabeled. But after looking around at other recordings, obviously the local guy is a git. Have a nice day.

  • Your interpretation is how I would play it if I could play it. Thank you for posting this. Speaking of playing, time for practice.

  • Nicely done, sir. Thank you so much for sharing. Your interpretation and perfomrnace of this masterpiece is thouroughly enjoyable. I am sure I will be listening to this again.

  • My fav.rendition by far is a bit slower but enjoyed this one though.

  • lovely:D

  • and not just on youtube I think! This is a near perfect performance of what must be one of the most technical organ works of JSBach. It is wonderful that such a piece can be composed and played, and can appear here too. Thank you very much!

  • So far this is my favourite version that is to be found on youtube...Could you tell me more about the organ? :D

  • look at w w w . aarnouddegroen . c o m

there you'll find more information about the organ if you click on "bethlehemkerk"

  • People who claim that this was too quickly are really missing the point. They are used to awful romanticised versions. This is the correct pace

  • nicely played! :)

  • It's not the speed that matters, it's how the notes are dancing here, how the daddeeh-daddahh connects and moves forward rather than stumbling and tottering around as in so many other performances. This has flow, has beauty, has emotion, in other words it has music. Wonderful!

  • Great performance!

  • A very tanented organist indeed as well as one of my favorite organ pieces of all time. I must confess however that I prefer to hear this piece played just a bit slower. For me it looses something when it is played too fast. Only my humble opinion of course.

  • Bravo.

  • Really fantastic!!

    Congratulations!

Misschien iets beter lezen, volgende keer?

  • That is really superb.

  • Is simply "perfect"!!

  • Genial!!! Einfach super! Weiterso!

    Can you teach me?

  • Many congratualtions on your fine performance! This is indeed a toccata so I think the tempo is appropriate and, in any case, it is his fabulous technique that allows him to interpret at this lively tempo. Fabulous stuff!

  • No one ever told Virgil Fox to "slow down"

  • please don't compare de Groen to Virgil Fox.

VIrgil Fox played too many wrong notes and his spirit was far less baroque than Mr. de Groen's.

de Groen is a far more authentic interpreter of Bach's music. Fox was more of a party-organist. Nothing more

  • Outstanding performance!!! I agree with udoober, slow it down a bit, let the people enjoy all those pedals and melodic fragments between them: low frequencies require more time to be percieved and fixed in the brain. Please keep posting your masterpieces!

  • You're on of the best organists I ever heard and one of my favorites. Please, keep up playing. I would like to be your student.

  • One of greatest performances of this piece I have ever seen!

  • I like your registration and your whole performance. Good work!

  • Very impressive that you can play it this well at this speed but slow it down. My goodness, it's not a race get to the end of the piece. The pipes barely get a chance to speak at this speed.

  • It's a toccata. You have to play it with some gusto. And all the notes speak clearly in this rendition, they just talk faster than in other versions.

  • Muy bueno, gracias

  • This is my favorite song!!, it's a great play, a little faster but very good, this is the best music!!!

  • WHOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOO!!!!
