Goth is a lifestyle that just shows appreciation for most any types of relatively dark art-forms. Modeled after the early German tribe known as the Gothic tribe. One of the tribe's most renowned gods is Woden, the god of magic, death, and art.
The "Goths" you see anymore though are mostly just trend following youth who desire to feel unique, but with the support of a larger group. They don't really know what Goth is, they just want to bask in a dark enigma.
Goth: certain badass medieval Germanic/European tribes :P Because I'm not technically a Visigoth or an Ostrogoth, I consider myself a Rollogoth. lol but more to the point. I don't believe being goth has anything to do with a style of clothing or belonging to a certain clique (vampires, mallrats, etc). It has to do much more with internal matters such as outlook on life and spiritual beliefs. I refer anyone who wants to experience Goth to Type O Negative :)
It is about finding somewhere to belong. Wearing the clothing is elegant and empowering, for me a return to grace that I think the human race has lost sight of. And I consider it to be armour, against the negativity. It also helps me to embrace everything about myself, the good and the bad, and I feel happier to know that I am being completely true to myself. It is also fun freaking out the general populace! :}
Yeah, goth for me is a feeling and mindset, not how I look. If you walked past me you would think I was just a normal guy. I listen to quite a bit of goth music, because I like it. I don't hang around other goths, not because I don't want to, just because I don't feel the need. I don't need to be part of the goth scene to feel goth. Feeling dark is a good feeling, at least for goths. Its not depression, depression is terrible for anyone.
i am goth. It means pretty close to what you said. every goth i know agrees with me that it means a sense of belonging to a rebellion against society and it's normal "Rules". it is an allowing to be different from the rest and have a dark side and be accepted for it. it's bacically a band of deep insighted misfits come together as one. that's what makes me goth. thats what goth is in my mind. i became goth on my own and was welcomed by it's members with open arms i now am happy and have security
i have been goth 4 3years and goth is a sence of saftey 4 me and i think i turned goth because i didnt want 2 turn out like most outher people and i think i really turned goth because i fell in love with the music and i have a passion 4 the way i look and i think goth is a way of letting an expressive side of me out
-other Goths for goth parties. I felt a part of, I realized that Goth was always inside of me. Comfort in the books I read; The music I attatched myself to; and I was able to see people how they are, not by how they look. I loved it and have never been happier in my short life. Black is the confidence to be who I am without distraction and the pressure of harsh cliques. I love life, my family, and as I age I hope to mature as well. I feel my Gothic friends will continue help me with that. ^^
I am 15 and have been a part of the Gothic society for a year. Black is more of a confidence thing for me. I used to always worry about how I looked to the world, didn't think I was good enough, I felt like trash. When I go out on the town now, I realize that people are probably going to like me or dislike me and thats okay. Goth directed my attention to my studies and more important things than how the wrld percieved me. It was how I percieved me that mattered. It's lots of fun to meet up with-
-- and I believe this is what constitutes what makes a goth, really. It's quite simple. If you are influenced by the music, if you identify with it, if you agree with the ideologies [tolerance, open-mindedness, etc.] behind it, if you support these ideologies in your daily life, this is mainly what constitutes a goth. Dressing up in gothic fashion is more or less merely a public display of said interests, and not what makes up the scene or makes a person a member in and of itself.
Why is Goth necessarily associated with tolerance? I can be open minded but I certainly couldn't be a judge of anything if I didn't invariably reject certain things. And Goths (in my opinion) always (at least year and years ago) had this veneer of elitism which was always attractive; too bad so very, very, very few were actually elite.
I think being Goth is merely the resulting modes of expression which eminate from a certain personality; that is why to simply dress Gothic is not sufficient to being Goth. For all I know this girl is not Goth because she doesn't say what music she likes.
Goths are very discriminating; after all, they certainly revelled in the idea of rejecting the mainstream (when it first started). That is why I mention the assumption of elitism.
Yes it was directed at you. And I asked you before what music you like. Anyone can dress up "gothic" and imitate a physical stereotype. But music taste that is gothic, generally speaking, requires a consistency of judgement which would prove whether you are 'gothic' or not. It is, in fact, a form of knowledge, so to speak. And because it is instinct it forces a person to comprehend and create in a certain way.
Alright, so to answer your question to what music I like: I think you would not consider me truly Goth because I like too much stuff that is not strictly goth in the classical sense. I like a few German bands like Subway to Sally, In Extremo, Faun, Letzte Instanz, Eisbrecher, Megaherz and Rammstein, but also the Sisters of Mercy, London after Midnight, Rob Zombie, Covenant, Diva Destruction, Apocalyptica, Claire Voyant, Break of Reality, just to name a few. I deliberatly did not talk about --->
(continued) ---> the music as something that defines a subculture because although I think that it is definitely a major part of being goth, it is also very varied and not all goths like the same bands. For instance, I can't be bothered with some of the Industrial stuff and most of the "new" hardcore that many cybers like exceptionally, but I also listen to other artists not decidedly gothic. On the other hand I never said I was a "true" down to core goth, although I most of my friends are and
(continued even further).--> and I only go to clubs where they have "black" (in our sense) parties. I like poetry of Goethe, Rilke and Byron. But in daylight I usually wear kinda alternative clothing that is not exceptionally black and my hair is dyed naturally red, not statement-like black, deep red or another strong colour. I wear corsets in lack and leather, velvet Victorian style dresses and hooped skirts. So knowing all that what would you say I am?
In terms of music, I would say you are Gothic only somewhat. And I think the music is important because, in recent times, it was the post-punk music (late 70's, early 80's) that was the catalyst to the idea and fashion that became known as Gothic. But overall, considering your literary tastes, and attitude, you are definitely more Gothic than most ;)
No, music/lyrics/poems can express the depths to a mind-set that any goth may have, but you don't have to listen, or like, them to have that thought process. It's just a matter of artistic taste for life, which can be expressed in various ways. Anyone can imitate, but anyone could feel. If they're imitating, they're just wasting their time. They wouldn't put up a video, which says that the person does not consider them self to be a "goth." knowledge--wisdom--tragedy...:P
First of all, your stockings are adorable, and you are so very pretty! ♥
Secondly, in response to the questions you posed -- I understand why you would want to ask this; especially as no one ever 100% fills in the stereotype. Everyone is multi-faceted. So, at what point do you say you are [insert label]? For the record, I am not a fan of shoving an entire person's existence under one umbrella term, for reasons aforementioned. But I am definitely heavily influenced by goth--
I think anyone babbleing about being goth is really anyoing.
you dont talk about yourself on youtube their is just has a big custer of perverts, and it makes you look lke an ATENTION seeker.
Btw I guess im aragent because I think
my world, my rock, my music, get the fuck off..when im walking its alone time for me. I dont want to stop and talk to people its my personal time with myself or friends. Yes i give alot of people that aragent look dont like it to bad.
Umm.. i`m sorry but I don`t really understand what you wrote.. does it make sense to anyone else? The only thing I could understand was that you though you were arrogant...
i'm a goth not because of the music or clothes, but my state of mind, and no its not a rebellion, indeed dark imagery and clothing does appeal to me, but calling myself goth doesn't make me a goth, i know deep down i am, but goth is a very diverse term you can be goth without having anything to do with d subculture, u could b a decendant of the ancient goth tribes who brought down the roman empire, but goth, it has a understanding & appreciating of things that others feel dt are dark & morbid
whats it matter, i think people stop bikering bout this stuff, we are all human beings and thats all we need to know, honestly if you express yourself through fashion and it nods towards a darker part of your personality then grate, but as for the snobby Goths, they aint origonle, so rebember that they are just hypocrites waring borrowed cloths and colors, like you and myselfe.
oh and some of them are probably jelus cause your pretty, and it dont matter how extream u look, its all about what
i don't think it's very easy to define what 'goth' is and. 'goth' is a very broad category. if we were to define goth, it would be like defining what makes a person nerd, gangsta, emo, or prep. the media doesn't help either in showing what image is associated with sterotypes. some shitty movies are sterotypical, and portray nerds as ugly kids with thick glasses. goth is usually seen as evil and dark. i think it's basically how one feels, and how they act. not what they wear.
my ownest opinion on such a thing we call sterio goth is no diffrent from what normel ppl think when they think they are normel goth comes from the heart and soul you can dress in all black for a day and have no true beauty of the goth culter within you only you can say what you are or arent others can just guess but it only matters whats in your heart and soul couse ppl will die and be goth becouse the soul is what lasts forever.........jack the reaper glf.......gothelife..much suport to you...
see there you go, people yearn for social acceptance. I'm a nerd. NOT A GOTH. Maybe goth-nerd, if your the type of person who believes in sub cultures. I was a comic book nerd. I hated Superman (normal people), i liked Bizarro, he did everything in reverse of other people. IT was a very very slow but gradual process; a combination of Sandman by Neil Gaiman, The Crow, and The Cure.
I'm not extreme enough either. I be a nerd. That am it.
Goth for me is finaley finding a group of people who accepted me for who I am, before I was always on the outside made to feel freakish and crap because I was just being me. I couldn't understand why people disliked me, I was just different, I was quiet, polite enjoyed school etc.
I don't view Goth as a rebelion, purely for the fact that I would still be me, I would still have the same thoughts, feelings and views even if I was into punk music or any other type of music, dress or scean.
