  • Great song - too bad these guys never got the deserved recognition.

  • listening to this band really makes me understand Curve a bit bettter. I think Curve really liked these guys (having only listened to Doppelgänger). opinions?

    also i really like this.

  • I love the song Picnic in the sky which is on a cd single of this I think

  • I've been trying to find this freakin' song for almost 23 years now.The first time I heard this was on a popular radio station(KROQfm)during the summer of 1988 and it was also the last time(never knew who were the band or song title). All I remember was the lyric "love" and the "scratch" record sound.I've been trying to find this song on YT once or twice a month for last 2 years(Now,when this song is over I'm going to listen to it again till my ears bleed, thank you for the upload).

  • @TheXtro101 Pop Will Eat Itself were a great group. This song is from their early Industrial beginnings.

I think this is the only song of theirs that got rotation on mainstream radio stations in the USA. They toured with Nine Inch Nails a few times.

  • @pashedmotatos right? they got no love here...but there are a few of us "poppies" still out here love "this.....etc" brilliant mf'n stuff!

  • @TheXtro101 I think the album this was on "Box Frenzy" got reissued once before already. I have one of the original copies it came out in the USA on some RCA affiliate, maybe beggars banquet. it's a good listen. youd like thrill kill cult too if you like pwei.

  • @beartunes Well, what a change "Industrial" music has come from their early dance club sound(late 1980s-'90s fr "Nitzer Ebb,Front 242,NiN,Wumpscut,Leaether Strip").In the last 8-10 years, the music has evolved sounding like "Trance Music" fr 1 of those Mega Raves & the singing lyrics sounds too robotic(some call it "TBM",Techno Body Music). In the last 6 years the Industrial-Gothic club scene here has been mostly invaded by Generation "Y" who are not ol skool or look like Hip Hop or like "JB".

  • This song always drove me insane at #'s in Houston back in the day.

  • Poppies are on patrol..

  • <: @dbracinggod

  • I cranked this song on the home stereo and played it on repeat as my (soon to be) ex-wife packed up her shit. The perfect soundtrack to breaking up.

  • always loved dancing to this in clubs during the 80's!!!!

  • im supprissed on how good these guys are, how little known they are...

  • I love, love, love this track!!! Thank you for sharing this video!!

  • thx for posting, Love this song for years!

  • clint mansell is a talented musician

  • Pop has finally eaten itself and X Factor is what it shat out.

  • @DrunkenPoetic

And the irony is that PWEI wouldn't have got beyond the ritual humiliation that is the X-Factor opening shows. (But then, what good bands would have?)

  • @DrunkenPoetic

    You've fucking nailed it.

  • top quality track, havent heard in ages. dont make music like this anymore!!!!

  • great song...haven't heard it in years..still gives me goosebumps!

  • Wow, I love the Poppies !!! PWEI were so coooool

  • yes indeedie in a quirky sort of way

  • what a great band

  • Great upload! What a tune...

  • I was at that Xymox show.

  • played this to 2 ex husbands and still love the song

  • What are you playing to number 3 then? Joy Division?

  • one of their best songs

  • Their best! I'll always getting my first dose of them. I was at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. in 1988 to see Clan Of Xymox. And this video came on before the band came on. I bought the tape the next day! Awesome song.

  • Just love this song, Man was into Mighty lemons then this turned up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT WAS IT!!

  • clint is now doing soundtracks for hollywood movies, he did Sahara. They did 6 reunion gigs in 2005....awesome night.

  • @MrNellydog wicked reformation gigs i went too both london gigs and relived my youth.

  • god used to love the poppies..clint poppie wwere is he now..

  • This may have been the best PWEI ever did; nice balance between the live elements, the samples, and the scratching. I loved follow up album "This is the Day..."; ridiculously catchy record. But this track has a rawer feel that has helped it to age better.

  • mansell was the singer and guitarist

  • This is amazing; you hear rap scratching samples, rock samples, and probably pop and techno samples.

This is the first song that I heard by these guys that wasn't from their last album.

To those who have heard Pop WIll Eat Itself for quite some time, do you know what role Cling Mansell had in the band?

    Cheers

  • ive been listening to them for quite some time. i saw them live in birmingham in 1993.

    clint mansell was the singer.

  • Heard this tune in New York summer of 89, just once, stuck in my mind, singing there every now and then, and only today, 20 yrs later, after having installed broadband, I found it! Great tune. Seems ready for some modern sound arrangement though. Great clip too, although a bit repetitive. God how some tunes get stuck in the head!

  • very nice

  • Phenomenal song!! I had the album many years ago. This song still sounds fantastic 20 years later:) Wonder if any of todays rubbish will still be stirring people 20 years from now..somehow I doubt it;)

  • That's right, fucking Pop Will Eat Itself are THE SHIT!!! And this song totally KICKS ASS!!!

  • This was the song that turned me on to them. I saw the video on the USA networks Night Flight since we didn't have MTV then. PWEI is pure genius.

  • awesome vid and song PWEI rulz!

  • Anyone know who was sampled for the female voice? It sounds like Joanna Lumley.

  • The sample is of Anne Clark. The track is called "True Love Tales".

  • ...wow, the sample sounds a lot like Kylie!!

  • not a big fan at the time (although i thought this track was dead good) but compared to contemporary indie shit it's sheer genius.

yeah i know - got a case of the Meldrew's

  • I still love this song. One of my top 10 of the 80's club scene...A Classic.

  • thanks dude

  • Sample it, loop it, fuck it and eat it.

    Beyond great lies the Poppies.

  • ...ive still got the long sleeved tour sweatshirt with that quote on it around the Pepsi inspired PWEI logo.... the fooking good old days of grebo, along with Neds, Crazyhead, Gaye Bikers etc...

  • Me too (short-sleeved one though) and with Clint's autograph on it. Had to wear it to the Brum reunion gig and loved seeing everyone else wearing their old tour t-shirts too - good night had by all. Still love this song too.

  • Thank you for uploading this!

  • LOL! You really don't get it do you??

  • ooooozes pure class.

  • Here you say 'pure class' and yet in another posting for PWEI you declare in your oh-so-worldly way 'the Poppies r crap'. What are you on and where can I get some?

  • An example of this includes the Johnny Morris sample (Taken from UK kids' TV show `Animal Magic`) at the beginning of the `Box Frenzy` album - "They`re very much like scruffy pigs to look at.... they`re very, very ugly indeed" - and of course the inlay sleeve to the same album which reads `The Poppies are Crap` (Fans will, of course, note the irony in this statement!!! Others may not..)

  • ^^ ownage :P ^^

  • alright!!!!!!!

  • Just a great creation of pwei from their major production of "nothing" records with the brain of Trent Reznor

  • this predates reznor, dummy

  • Ooh this takes me back to my college days...almost twenty years ago, when this song came out. I loved it then and still do! Timeless!!!!

  • wooh yeah, big up stourbridge

  • the vid is so creepy (i suppose that was the aim of it) but i love this song!

  • 5 stars for you my friend!

  • reminds me of old KMFDM..

  • you might want to get that dyslexia sorted out.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhh everlyn

  • Thank you, this is one of my favourite songs

  • crazy psychos, great songs...

    PW rulez!

    cheers

    from BRAZIL!

  • i love this song. in the beginning it starts with "when i fall in love,it will be forever" then the song starts and ends with " gone gone gone.fantastic

  • thats a nice start...but it doesn't beat...

    augusta, georgia, late september

  • ............yeah!! Ive seen the poppies many times, and they were awesome every time! Go Grebbo!!

  • I Love PWEI, one of the greatest acts in the UK ever!

  • what a great song...I'm not a huge fan of PWEI, but some songs are really great..this song has some darky feel that i like it.

  • Cheers....

and now its gone gone gone....

  • Now I've got it!

My copy of "Unspoilt" has similar rewinding effect/disturbance at 02:29 of this video.

  • My favourite part of "Unspoilt by Progress" VHS video release.

  • The Poppies are Go

  • Fantastic! Only have this on a battered 45 - and no deck to play it on......
