Looks worse then what it was, long story, fixed problem, safety practices now implemented, moving on, check the next video you can see what we have done.
Your bungee launcher is WAYYYY to high... It needs to be no more than 6" off the ground and your bungee should be stretched to around twice its unstretched length...
My 1KG EDF takes off in a heartbeat with 10KG of force on a bungee thats 6m long, stretched to 12m in length... I use a hand baggage scale to measure the amount of force on the stretched bungee, hence I know its 10 x the models weight...
Get your launcher down to ground level and bungee to twice its length and try that.
Well that would have been great news a couple months back, great info, I will let me students know. We have since then moved to landing gear and have had great success with it. Go to our channel and check out the latest videos of our Viking project, we have come along way.
@sshoover10 I have seen a lot of it actually, its awesome :-)
I thought I would mention it because you would still stand to gain a lower flying weight, more aerodynamic, quicker/shorter take-offs and shorter grass landings :-)
Soon as you put little wheels on anything, it really limits your options :-(
I got a Jetapault from fanjets in the end because it was far cheaper than trying to build and supply my own materials myself, even after paying the import duty and tax into the UK.
The catapult/bungee/slingshot launch (0:45) looked good. It just did not detach early enough. Just use a longer one and detach it at half of it's stretched length.
The other problem though was setup time, it took the kids and I some time to get everything setup, we only have an hour and I want them to be able to work on their planes. Having landing gear was just more pratical, we can go anywhere now. We might come back and visit that approach at a later date.
Build a launch dolly, its just a simple frame with wheels. put a second receiver and a steering servo on it. You could then put landing skids on the flying wing. The Germans did this on several planes during WW2. It worked well for them. Or you could just line the kids up in a line and use them as a barracade net. haha. just kidding.
Using past engineered products, I like it, didn't even think about that. On the next plane we might have to create something like this, because I would rather belly land the plane. Thanks for the input!
AWESOME! good to see it in the air finally! it flew awesome to! let me know when you fly it next cause i can come this next monday and check it out! i also got a b-2 bomber built and ready to go with steerable landing gear that i want to take to the skies!
Nice to hear from you, I thought you had moved on from the rc realm. Every Monday is a possible flight day if the weather permits. Would love to see your plane!
@sshoover10 why not use a bamington net held with a person at each end just touching the ground that way if its coming in to fast they can let go and the net can still slow it...engineers moto "K.I.S." keep.it.simple...
So get this, the kidos saw this comment and then talked with the PE department to get an old volleyball net for that same concept. We will use this net next time for our landing. Thanks for the great idea.
Congrats .on the flight , i love the wheel concept. is the first wing ive seen with wings, i make my own wings from plans i get online , you got me thinking i might try and to put wheels on mine.
Thats what I am talking about. I got a rush watching this one. Really great job everyone.
Here is a thought for stopping that mammoth plane.
Have you ever seen some of the large nets they throw off of small boat to catch little fish?
They are strong yet soft enough not to hurt the plane. Have a way to hold 2 sides of this net and catch the plane. Kind of like what they do on an Air Craft Carrier to catch crippled plane on landing.
successful flight at last, for landing the Viking you could use a big fine net that you just fly the aircraft into, Real uavs use this method when landing on ships
i miss Erwin Middle School and ive only been gone 1 year =P

Why would you risk taking of into the kids? That was not the smartest idea.
