  • Sam Cooke was the sexiest man in history, and his voice still gives me chills! Thanks for this vid!!! :)

  • I love this tribute, but he started his career as a teenager in the gospel group the Highway QC. Man i would love to hear a cut by them.

  • awesome tribute to an awesome performer!

  • My personal bias is more toward Sam because I was madly in love and Sam's songs totally fit my emotions at the time. Later, in different circumstances, I became a JAMES fan. SO THERE!!!

  • A really nice tribute!!!! Sam Cooke was the greatest and will always be the greastest!!!

  • sam is called the inventor of soul... he in my opininon had the greatest voice and writing skills... james the entertainer greatest...ray the genious of soul..valley of kings ok?

  • Nice and wonderful mix youve made of the legendary Sam Cooke. I have a vast collection of his music. Thank you for posting my favorite of all time Sam Cooke. Thank you

  • MISS this kind of music. Someone bring it back please! Michael Buble' just doesn't do it for soul hungry people!

  • ONE UNBELIEVABLE singer! Dreamy.

  • Great job! Loved it! One of the top 3 greatest vocalists of all time, along with Marvin Gaye and Donny Hatthaway...

  • great vid

  • MR NAT KING COLE' MR SAMMY DAVIS JR' MISS PYHLLIS HYMAN' MR MARVIN GAYE' MR LOUIS ARMSTRONG' MISS PATSY CLINE' MR DEAN MARTIN' MR BARRY WHITE' MR LUTHER VANDROSS' MR SAM COOKE' MR HOWLING WOLF' MISS DINAH WASHINGTON' MR LOU RAWLS' MR JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON' MR JOHN LEE HOOKER' the names go on and on..too many to list. so many' many' more...Thank you God for them all. may they forever rest in God's peace.

  • Thank you for the video..No doubt one of the best soul singers ever.

If kids today would only listen to this

  • Anyone that knows me knows I love Sam Cooke. He will always be to me; the greatest singer America has ever produced.

  • Sam gets a lot of credit for the things he did, but in my opinon he could never get enough. He was, is and always will be the greatest singer and songwriter and producer of soul!

it angers me a little when I hear James Brown called the godfather of soul. he was good, no disrespect, but he couldn't hold a candle to Sam.

its Sam and Brother Ray and thats all I have to say! excellent vid!

  • really?? I love me some Sam Cooke (obviously why i made the video!) but I think James Brown definitely deserves the title of Godfather of Soul. I guess everyone has their tastes then

  • @eritreangurrl Why the P---ing over Sam Cooke vs James Brown? I'm a white guy - BUT both were great "soul stirers". Sam's genre was more romantic ballad. James was more "driving rock". Sam evoked touchewy-feely emotions while James inspired jump-and-shout. You might say the difference was Sam was smooth chocolate while James was frantic chips. This white boy completely enjoyed bot singers and appreciated each for his unique styling and talent. Bot had soul. My personal bias is more for Sam.

  • @eritreangurrl My personal bias is more toward Sam because I was madly in love and Sam's songs totally fit my emotions at the time. Later, in different circumstances, I became a JAMES fan. SO THERE!!!

  • @WOODSTOCK694FUN well said woodstock. but sometimes the less famous the better. those of us who really know soul music can say he is perhaps the best kept secret. much love

  • I just want to say that this was a great post. Thank you for it. I am a HUGE Sam Cooke fan. He was a good friend of my Dad's from the Soul Stirrer days. He never forgot his friends when he got big. He even offered to record my Dad on his SAR label(my Dad had an incredible bass voice), but my Dad wanted to stay in the Gospel field. I like the information you gave. Mr. Cooke died before I was born but the stories my Dad and uncles told of him and the Stirrers made me feel like I knew them. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much! That's awesome that you have a connection to Sam Cooke, I wish I did!

  • That's awesome ! I read that Sam was always trying to help others, especially the people he knew before he became really popular. I also heard a lot of people turned down his advice of going pop to stay in gospel. He really was a giving person; he cared for people and not just himself.

  • @herschelzboy WoW...very interesting posting...I have all the Soul Stirrer's and Sam Cooke's music...In fact, the Soul Stirrer's are the "only" Godspel group in the Rock n Roll hall of fame....Sam Cooke is my absolute favorite singer of all times.

  • you did great thank you for this .

the one and only Mr. Sam Cooke

miss you down in new orleans la

    your boys

    uptown''

  • sam cooke-the gold standard of soul music

  • Why would a guy making a million dollars a year in the 60's, owns his own records , driving a ferrari, wind up in a seedy place would a prostitute? Just does'nt add up.

  • Otis Redding is one of my favorite singers and he produced some great work but no one can compare to Sam Cooke You name them Otis, Luther, Al Green,The Supremes,Aaron Neville,Patty LaBelle,Terence Trent D'Arby and countless others have attempted Change Gonna Come . They all sang it well but the standard was set by the incomparable Cooke

  • Sam cooke is a very good singer ,but otis redding edges him out especially when it comes to singing a change is gonna come.even though it is his original song, otis put more feeling and soul into it ,it just reaches out and grab you .

  • Sam Cooke in my opinion, is undeniably the GREATEST MUSICIAN OF ALL-TIME. Rollin Stone awarded him the 4th greatest singer of all-time, but I just can't see him any lower than in 1st place in that category... along with countless others. I mean his career was short cuz of his assassination, but what he did with the Soul Stirrers in Gospel and then with R&B, not to mention he was one of the first African Americans to gain super stardom in the Pop genre. SAM COOKE'S THE REASON MANY HAVE A CAREER!!

  • Great Job!!!

    My favorite albums:

-BEST OF-The one with the yellow cover.

--"ONE NIGHT STAND" LIVE AT THE HARLEM CLUB. Stunning!

NIGHT BEAT Billy Preston on organ.

-SAM COOKE WITH THE SOUL STIRRERS

    Required listening.

P.S. As a 55 yr. old proud Carolinian who grew up in the 60's, I still can't listen to "A Change Is Gonna Come," and hold back the tears,

    R.I.P

  • Fred Tyree Hope Valley and Chapel Hill and oh the sweet young love I had for these soulful fabulous men...still do!

  • this is a great post, thanks

  • with apologies to ray charles, sam cooke possessed the greatest popular music voice ever. he was also the greatest gospel front man ever.

  • A big thank to you for doing this vid tribute to a great man, he was awsome. You did a splendid job. THANKS!!!!!!!!!

  • "touched the hem of his garment" blew me away 30 years ago. Still does. Spectacular.

  • The man could phrase a song like no other. Effortless vocalization, smooth and sensual. The beginning of a whole new style of singing. More than a legend - an artist who made a very positive difference in the world. How I wish we had singers with one half this talent today - people who actually cared about what they were singing about. Sam always took you on a ride...and he did it with style and a smile. A real gift.

  • Dozed off and went to heaven and asked god what was cookin' ? and with a smile and sense of humor he said 'take a seat, Sam Cooke is' Such an angelic voice!

  • Selam..good job. Sam is just genious..father of soul music

  • A lovely tribute to a lovely talented special man whose music will live on forever :))

  • He lives in the top 10

  • Thank you eritreangurrl :-)

    Respect

    Sam is the man!!!!

  • I may be young, but I prefer Sam Cooke over some of the crap they call music these days.

  • same here, im 16 and my musical tastes are a lot different than most of my peers. old school all the way!

  • I couldn't agree with the comment below me more... 29 top 40 hit records within a 7-year tenure is ridiculous, but he sure deserved every last one of em. And "Rolling Stone" can place em at the 4th spot for "Greatest Singer Of All Time" if they want to... but we all know that Sam Cooke is numba 1. As stated on the conclusion segment of "Sam Cooke: Portrait Of A Legend"... "Sam Cooke's yours, he'll never grow old".

  • like lc said...he been gone forty something years and i still miss him, ain't a day goes by i don't think about him when someone or something touches your heart there is always a gap when they're gone love you sam, always have, always will xx

  • That is ridiculous, 29 top 40 hit records within the 7 years he was mainstream. He was the man, and always will be.

  • Will you please, if you can, put Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang" and "Another Saturday Night Up."

  • sam's the man

  • Thanks for the tribute about Sam. Great job!

  • Great tribute--thanks!

  • Thanks for the posting. The best live Sam Cooke is Live in Miami,at the Copa he did not get down,as to not upset his upscale crowd(sic),check out Dreamgirls an the scene were Eddie Murphy is performing at an upscale(sic) club.

  • Sam "The Man" Cooke was one of the great vocalists of our time. Thanks for the great tribute; it pulls at the heart strings...

Only Sixteen, You Send Me and all the others.

  • im a 44yr old guy and not very religious, more spiritual, but when i hear sam sing " touch the hem of his garment" i get teary eyed. everytime, no joke. such a great talent with such a tragic end. looking for info on his death one night, i came across a website that has the crime scene photo of him dead at the hotel office. very, very sad. thanks sam for touching us all so deeply

  • Whats the name of the 2nd song on video?

  • "Touch the hem of his garment" , with the Soul Stirrers,

  • theBest live Sam Cooke at the Copa Ithink is the Best/ igene m

  • Great post, do you happen to have a full version of "Only Sixteen"?

    Thanks again

  • thx! =) id love to put up "only sixteen" but when i tried uploading 'another saturday night', youtube wouldnt let me b/c of copyright. so im guessing the same thing might happen again i guess. a whole bunch of sam cooke vids are being removed off the site...its so sad =[

  • Sam Cooke was the woo-meister . Great great voice - so sad he had to die so soon.

  • Very nice. You put a lot of heart and soul into your tribute to Sam Cooke. Thanks for sharing it. Laura (:

  • What was the 2nd song?

  • if you're talking about the gospel song after "shake", well its called "touch the hem of his garment" . it was way back when sam was with the soul stirrers. =]

  • Amazing video. Thanks for the tribute to,in my opinion, the #1 singer of all time.
