Personally, I like both Okinawan styles and Japanese styles. I find it beneficial to cross train in both from time to time. There is always more to learn. Okinawan karate is the original karate and the only true karate.
I lived in Japan for 7months while I was station there in Marine Corps base. It all depends who teaches you. Right behind my house there is karate called Shotokan, 5mim walking distance from my house. I trained there couple time and they never spar full contact because of legal issues. But in Japan, they really do not care of health legal issues too much so they tend to train more harder and brutal. I fought against many people while I was in the service and karate fighters can take pain.

I think that Shotokan is a very good way of fighting (real fights, no rules) because of the dirty and fast yet powerful blows. Straight punches only i'll give you that! Low kicks sometimes but they only work to wear an opponent down over a few rounds. in a real fight you don't get chance to do that, or in a semi contact competition
@DunxMeister I agree with almost all what you say (I've had a fair few squabbles with acerwk myself) - but I don't think shotokan has only straight punches. Kage and ora tsuki for example, particularly in the kata.
@masserby DONT QUOTE KATA! It was designed to help people train in solitude so don't take it literally. Throw those punches on a pad effectively and i'll shut up!
@DunxMeister mate I think you're the one taking the kata literally. They're sketches. They're outlines of techniques, but don't apply rigidly. Funakoshi made this clear in his 20 principles of karate. Take his comments on stances. They're long and pronounced in kata and basics to aid conditioning, but are used differently in fighting. So you would never throw a punch from the tekki stance, except in some very rare instances. And as a matter of fact, you can see (and feel) a groin kick coming.
Tekki shodan contains a clear defence against a low kick (and even the yoi stance properly provides defence against a groin kick, which funnily enough is outlawed in MMA but perfectly legitimate incombat for which shotokan trains);
Loads of roundhouse punches in the kata (try Tekki shodan again).
@masserby dont quote a kata thats just sad. If you threw a tekki shodan style roundhouse punch at someone you'd get laughed at. I wish it wasn't true but it is. Its crap mate. Hold a pad for a good boxer throwing a hook and you'll know what I mean. The groin kick defence is bollocks. Anyone can kick anyone in the nuts. You wont see it coming and it will hurt. Kata was designed to help people train in solitude don't take it to literally!

Gichen Funakoshi brought the style from Okinawa to mainland Japan. Obviously it has evolved some from that time but it did start in Okinawa.

Straight punches only i'll give you that! Low kicks sometimes but they only work to wear an opponent down over a few rounds. in a real fight you don't get chance to do that, or in a semi contact competition

@DunxMeister I agree with almost all what you say (I've had a fair few squabbles with acerwk myself) - but I don't think shotokan has only straight punches. Kage and ora tsuki for example, particularly in the kata.

@DunxMeister mate I think you're the one taking the kata literally. They're sketches. They're outlines of techniques, but don't apply rigidly. Funakoshi made this clear in his 20 principles of karate. Take his comments on stances. They're long and pronounced in kata and basics to aid conditioning, but are used differently in fighting. So you would never throw a punch from the tekki stance, except in some very rare instances. And as a matter of fact, you can see (and feel) a groin kick coming.

Try Taiji Kase - Old JKA Kumite for takedown;
Tekki shodan contains a clear defence against a low kick (and even the yoi stance properly provides defence against a groin kick, which funnily enough is outlawed in MMA but perfectly legitimate incombat for which shotokan trains);
Loads of roundhouse punches in the kata (try Tekki shodan again).
