Not sure if you still need help, but the same thing happened to me. It's a problem with the ringtone itself. Before you rename it as a .caf, make sure that it is a working .aiff and not a .aif. To make it easier, I just had my cut file as a .mp4 to start with, opened it with Wavepad (free audio program for Mac or PC), and then saved it as a .aiff. After I had it at .aiff instead of .aif, I changed the name to the .caf, ssh'd it in, restarted my iPhone, and it wasn't silent anymore :)

unforunately my custom text alert stopped working after i used the ipod feature on my iphone. i have tried rebooting it, deleting it and resetting a new one and nothing is working.

nothing a simple restore wont fix. They dont actually void the warrenty unless you fuck it up SOMEHOW and then take it to applestore without restoring it. But the first tip they give any iphone users with a problem is to restore it to factory settings and see if it still works. And that puts the warrenty back in tact (assuming its not expired!)

I'm trying to follow your steps and when I get to the part where you right click the song in itunes to convert i get an error message "could not convert all of the selected files. the files may be write protected or of the wrong type" but its an mp3 file and i checked other songs and they have the same error message. also the next error message pops up saying i don't have access to write but i made sure to give full access already. you must jailbreak to get ssh on your phone.  "openssh" is easily found in the cydia application after jailbreaking with something like quickpwn or the pwnage tool

it should instead of going to advanced you just hit preferences and keep it at general. where it says "When you insert a cd" there's a button that says "import settings" change the import using to AIFF then hit okay go back to library then right click on your sound file in the library and click "Create AIFF version"

Default Username is "root". Default Password is "alpine". Your host name is the ip given to your phone through your home router or such. This can be discovered by going to settings and then the wifi and selecting the arrow to the right of your home wifi networkname and it should give you your "IP" something like 192.168.1.106 or a similar number. Let me know how it goes.

3. Press the Arrow at the far right of the wifi signal that you are connected to. (Blue ">" thinging with a circle around it)

Question: 1. Did you make a backup of the file you replaced? If so put it back so at least you have your default sound.

2. These instructions were written before the 3G and I don't have a 3G so maybe it is slightly different. Probably not, but 2.0 software might store the SMS sounds in a different place.

3. Verify the original sound by opening it to make sure it is the sound you want to replace.

i dont know but i did everything and it worked fine just one problem just say you want a text tone to last 29 seconds when someone text you the songs plays but when you pick up the phone to check your msg the tone should stop playing but for the iphone it dont stop playing tell the song is over any ideas. cause regular phones the song keeps on playing but once you open up the phone the song stops but again for the iphone it keeps on playing tell the song is over.

You want the SMS Alert/Song to stop playing when you open the iPhone right? I cannot think of a way without software rewriting to make this happen. Most people have small clips for their text messages and long 29 second songs for their incoming phone calls. I don't know of an option in the iphone to allow you to make this happen. I would google "modmyifone" and ask on that site. They are very good and might know of something!
