  • If its not suluble why is the water brown

  • @IodineVapour Because smallest particles are in suspension (like when you put earth in water. Earth isn't soluble, but the water turn brown for a long time)

  • @Gastripolux Take it from me Iodine is slightly soluble in H2O have you ever heard of Lugols Iodine solution this is iodine dissolved in water

  • take care of your baby instead of making explosives

  • Great idea from KI. Back in the day we would get concentrated ammonia and iodine crystals from a private pharmacy (They were all private locally owned and sold a variety of chemicals). Really cool stuff to play with as a kid it is really safe. Never new about the Iodine from KI trick. Now that things are more difficult, With conc. Amonia the reaction is very exothermic with irritating fumes. Good job.

  • That is a terrible way of making NI3. Just add iodine to concentrated ammonia.

  • @licetdavid As terrible as explaining how to make water burning H2 and O2 and to show on the same video how to make hydrogen from an electrolysis or a HCl+Al reaction... Terrible, because everybody should have pressurized hydrogen at home !

Here's the way to make NI3 when you only have KI... There's already a load of vid on youtbe to make NI3 from pure iodine (wich is hard to find and danegrous), not from a iodine salt !

And you don't need concentrated ammonia. 10% is more than enough.

  • why is there a penis to the right side of the page?

  • this is what we did in CHEM 2 in High school...so awesome!!

  • LMAO @ the '754' in the NFPA symbol!

  • XD 754 Reactivity rating

  • My Doctor Used this to Treat teachers!

  • I can't say that it's absolutely useless it's realy useful for jokes as a paste that dryes and becomes unstable and in water it's quite safe. For example but a drop on someones notebook)))))

  • @nickoolay lol, i would'nt use a high explosive "for a joke"...

NI3 is a strange fun thing, but is still an explosive.

  • @Gastripolux i agree, but with proportions like 0.01 gram it will go off before the person will get their hands on it.. (; also you can get some little paper triangles with about 0.05 gram of some HE on, to put inside cigarettes..

  • @nickoolay No its not quite safe in water. If that is how you store it, you have just been lucky. It's only moderately safe if you store in ammonia because NI3 forms a ligand with the ammonia which stabilizes the molecule.

  • @TakronRust actually i don't store it just after syntesis use it as a paste in the solution where it was formed(if you use the reacion in ammonium hydroxide and Iodine solution in ehtanol NI3 will react with solution so you have to use it quick) that's the reason i never tryed to store it. But i'll remember your advice.

  • Next time use a fume hood and gloves when working with corrosive chemicals, especially hydrogen iodide!

  • @gogo311 Where do u see hydrogen iodide ?

  • @Gastripolux Well, hydrochloric acid and potassium iodide make hydrogen iodide when mixed. How can you not know this? Be careful! Do some research before these experiments.

  • @gogo311 ummm true... Maybe I should have put H2O2 before HCl... Hydrochloric acid is just there to add the H+ needed for the main reaction :

    2XI + H2O2 + 2HY -> 2H2O + I2 + 2XY

Btw, HI is ultra super soluble in water and stay aqueous. The only real danger of this experiment come from I2 vapor and from some idiots who think they can "use" NI3.
