cant really see but sounds like a finger roll ,sounds like i play it with a right hand finger roll d-d rolll- k t d roll-k-t.....ok not so flawless like his offcurse,,,or try change the t with a slap
When he is doing the more intricate ornamentation on Beladi, is he doing a finger roll with his right hand? I've been rewinding for like 10 minutes, but I'm still confused
awesome mike....I've had a darbouka/doumbek/tabla lol for about 6 years. My Egypt ex called it a tabla. Anyway I can almost make the sounds you make but only can do it with the traditional djembe position. I wish I could do it like you in the sideways position. I always end of hitting it so hard I keep knocking it back. How do you do it bro?
lol thank you so much lo, my dad got me a durbaka a while ago and i have nooooo idea how 2 play it, and its rly anoying cuz i try and try but cant seen 2 get the beats playin in my head 2 play on the drum
Good job at breaking it down, then adding onto what you just taught. This is what the beginners out there (who are trying to learn this on their own) are looking for. And anyone that thinks an ornamental tek or ka "has" to be a certain way with a certain hand is an idiot. Watch any pro-level drummer and you will see a bewildering variety of strokes, sounds, and fills. There is the heartbeat of a groove and there is "everything else". The "everything else" part is constantly changing.
excellent but i wish bloggers would stop fighting with each other over miniscule things....music is the international language which can unite mankind...stop the bullcrap over origins, pronunciations, etc. and dig the music !!!
What r u talking about american speak english language have a look in english dictionary if u can found a word dumbek or dumbelek like the greeks say baklava is greek desert/sweet n u claming the dumbek is amerkan instrument? where r u from man? ok I understand that in middle east they have the same instrument bcoz of turks ruled them 600 yrs n they learned the dumbek from us I can understand that but not what u saying dunbek is north american lol I just lough at u thats all man,get the facts.
What? His beladi (actually the correct name is Masmoudi Saghir) is fine. You can ornament with a tk or a double ka as you do, or a left hand roll before each tk: D D~ tk T D~ tk T~ tk. Or you can play your tk twice as fast making it a tktk or you can fill the whole thing in for a measure or two: Dk Dk tk Tk Dk tk Tk tk.
for the rolls he is using his fingers in a one two three motion index first then middle then pointer

Is doumbek similiar to the persian Drum Tombak in any ways?
wigwamSixty3isback 3 years ago
I think it is the same drum (or similar) by a different name. The word doumbek is from North America I think while darabouka is from the middle east.

Dumbelek is Turkish not American
tsfmoa 3 years ago
I wrote doumbek not dumbelek. I'm sure this north American variant is based on a middle eastern (or perhaps Turkish) word.
mikewhitla 3 years ago
Look m8 in Turkey in the cities they call the instrument dumbek but some part of Turkey and mostly in the villages they called dumbelek ok.

tsfmoa you're an idiot. All he said that in north America thats how people relate to the "tabla" aka doumbek. Get a hobby you dumbass.

hey body baklava is not greek the originl baklava is from turkey.. and doumbek is arabic word in turkey they call it darbuka ..
skunqly 3 years ago
No. The tombak is wooden and has an animal skin head. Different techniques are used to play it (finger snaps). It is Persian in origin.

OMG!!! baladi is so wrong! the ornamented rythm has to be played like this:
right hand: basic rythm (dum - tak)
left hand: ornament. (ka)
it sounds like this:
dum dum ka ka tac dum ka ka tac ka ka.
