I think Krista handled the second part of the interview in better fashion simply by letting her guest express herself without constant interruption. I still don't like her tone and style but at least she allowed the other party to state her beliefs. Some interviewers won't even invite guests they disagree with. Too bad she concluded the interview on an unnecessary belittling note. Such an interview would have been better served by someone who has good knowledge of the subject.

War planes are unnecessary for Canada. Our cold climate requires tried and tested double engined planes (of which there are several alternatives) because they're more appropriate and reliable. Much cheaper, too.

Since Krista brought up the loss of 150 soldiers in Afghanistan as her defence, think about this: The work of all artists stands as a symbol of freedom (to quote JFK), the freedom to express themselves in whatever form they wish without fear of persecution. Therefore, those soldiers died helping to rebuild a nation that would give people that freedom. They died so people like Margie can dance on stage. To take that away from artists or anybody else devalues what they have died fighting for.

Whether you approve of arts funding or not, you should be able to sit down with someone of the opposite viewpoint and have a civil discussion. I think Krista handled the second part of the interview in better fashion simply by letting her guest express herself without constant interruption. I still don't like her tone and style but at least she allowed the other party to state her beliefs. Some interviewers won't even invite guests they disagree with. Too bad she concluded the interview on an unnecessary belittling note. Such an interview would have been better served by someone who has good knowledge of the subject.

it's that they are not profitable to the artists.
But they are to the rest of us.
Build a theatre and soon you will have a resturant opens next to it, and a cafe. In time a whole comercial comunitiy with thrive and people will want to spend more time in it, spending their money.
This is a very simplified model but this is how gentrafication works.

As for funding for the Arts.......taxpayers should not be subsidizing anything other than core services.

She is a professional and ticket prices aren't cheap to see her dance, but perhaps we should provide federal funding for the Canadian NHL players since they contribute the common good too. If you look at the number of hits for Margie Gillis youtube videos I don't think she should use the term 'common' in describing what she does.

In Montreal, we have bridges falling apart, new hospitals need to be built, but my tax dollars are going to this??? Come on, people. Let's get our priorities straight. War planes are unnecessary for Canada. Our cold climate requires tried and tested double engined planes (of which there are several alternatives) because they're more appropriate and reliable. Much cheaper, too.

Since Krista brought up the loss of 150 soldiers in Afghanistan as her defence, think about this: The work of all artists stands as a symbol of freedom (to quote JFK), the freedom to express themselves in whatever form they wish without fear of persecution. Therefore, those soldiers died helping to rebuild a nation that would give people that freedom. They died so people like Margie can dance on stage. To take that away from artists or anybody else devalues what they have died fighting for.

@marksoju The Canada Council holds a a musical instrument bank that consists of 15 of the world's most precious instruments (totalling $27,000.000.00). They are each awarded to young talented musicians on a short-term loan for FREE so they may continue their development as world-class performers. Thanks to this system, many of them have gone off to have flourishing careers (eg. James Ehnes). Hardly a "hobby" considering the dedication and hard work that goes into it. And you don't support this?
