CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, NO TIME FOR LOSERS CUZ WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout baby. That's the hockey I grew up with. Dad froze the yard and we froze our asses for hours. No helmets, no mouthgards. If the goalie was lucky he had some old catcher's gear. Go to the Stadium, smell the piss and watch the Hawks. Yeah!
I remember when Here Come The Hawks was the brand new Blackhawks theme song in 1969. No disrespect to The Fratellis and their song, Chelsea Dagger, but this is one of the greatest theme songs in sports from a team that sports the best logo in sports. On Sunday night during the season, my family used to listen to Lloyd Pettit on WGN radio and here him call, "A shot and a goal."
Man, do I really want them to bring home the cup after the "Nightmare Game," Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup Finals.
A huge debt of gratitude for whoever compiled this video. Old-school hockey footage is the best. These were fearless men -- no helmets, no face masks, minimal pads, just crazy bastards willing to do what it took to get it done. There's no way I'd do what these guys did.
Does that make me a pussy? Why yes, yes it does Guilty as charged. But it also makes them ballsy motherfuckers. And they didn't get paid shit compared to what today's padded and pampered players are paid. Crazy bastards.
I was a teenager back in the 60's when most of this footage is from. The Black Hawks were a flashy team. Guys like Hull,Mikita, Ken Wharram,Pat Stapleton and Glen Hall. I love the way they passed the puck around! GO HAWKS!
Can anybody spare an open bank account for a ticket? Probably free in Philly! No fanatical victory in Philadelphia, they might have celebration in pitching a perfect game while the hawks will do the shutout and sweep in the city of brotherly love!
One of my favorite parts of the video is Bobby Hull stopping to sign an autograph after climbing the steps at Chicago Stadium. Great to see old time hockey without helmets as well as long lost highlights of Stan, Hull and Espo.
I was at the 51 goal game; SRO, but there. I recall the handshakes from the Bruins. It was magical, and the magic is returning. GO HAWKS.....sing it everyone !! ;)
This is great footage aof a wonderful era in Chicago Blackhawks and NHL Hockey with Hall of Famers Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, and Stan Makita. The new tradition of the Blackhawks plays game #2 of the NHL Western Conference Finals tonight in San Jose, as the Hawks try to go up 2-0 and make their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 1991.
I like how in the beginning when this video was made, angry Hawk fan vented their anger against Bill Wirtz. This franchise has had a complete 180° turn. Please Hawks! Make this our year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Waiting for the overtime here in Sweden.Second-leg in Motorcity.Though an Islanders-fan.The Hawks are the second best thing.Plus Chicago are the friendliest city i visit in the US.
This clubsong ranks among the best up with the Mets ,meet the Mets.
i came home from the hospital in a redwings jumper when i was born and still i must admit its awesome the hawks are back in contention, no other team has played eachother more and there is gonna be some awesome games next season between these two powerhouses
If you think the song is awesome which it is,you should of been at the chicago stadium, when the 'hawks hit the ice with Keith Magnuson(leading the way), Keith was alway's the first one to come out, flying down the ice to the other end of the rink it gave you goosebumps, still does to me every time I hear this great song of ours.
118 MPH slap shot. Hull had the fastest slap shot in history. Hull and Stosh were the face of the Hawks and the city of Chicago for a long time. Love 'em. Hawksfansite.ning
Bobby Hull had that great slap shot that nobody wanted to block. Brett Hull may have had the greatest wrist shot of all time. Alright gang, who's the better player? Father or Son?
i was cleaning some stuff in my house a couple days ago and found a cassette tape, iI put it in and it was a old hawks playoff game from chicago stadium brought back a lot of memeries when I was a kid laying in bed at night listening to the hawks on the raido.
This brings back memories. Players w/o helmets. The old Blackhawks team that I remember from the early 70's (Bobby & Dennis Hull, Stan Mikita, Pit Martin, Keith Magnuson, Tony Esposito, etc.). My first live game was the blackawks vs Kings at Chicago Stadium in 1970 (Hawks won 7-0). Too bad Bobby Hull had to ruin my childhood by moving to Winnipeg (I forgive you Bobby).I don't follow hockey much since leaving Chicago in 1974. What you can't tell with these old films was how good a skater Hull was. I was just a kid when he was playing, but I remember that when he got wound up he might have been the fastest ever.
Love that song. But then tore down the old Chicago Stadium. Then my job moved me to SE Georgia. NHL Center Ice package on satellite is pricey. Then Pat Foley got canned. Then the guard changes, Foley is coming back, and the Hawks sign a contract with WGN TV to do both the Hawks home AND away games on "American's TV Station" which comes into southeast Georgia by satellite very nicely, thank you very much!!! Life is good again!!!
Hate to rain on your parade, but in the NHL only Versus, CBC, and NBC are allowed to Nationally Televise games, so WGN will NOT be showing games out of market, so only in Chicago or Illinois will the hawks be seen on WGN Channel 9...not the superstation.
It sucks. It's one of the many idiotic things Gary Bentmann has done. The Blackhawks could turn into hockey's version of the Chicago Cubs, if Bentmann would get his head out of his buttocks. By Cubs, I meant building a nationwide fan base, like the Cubs, and the Bulls did.
i'm in the army now and am of the same mindset. can't believe that Rocky has done what he has done with our boys. Hawks hockey is back- and I'm watching and cheering again, just from farther away!
Good call brianofnj - this was done by the Dick Marx Orchestra. He's the father of famous pop star Richard Marx who had all those hits in the 80's. Anyway, Here Come the Hawks is a great theme song.
WOW...I hadn't heard this song in years. I grew up in NJ and my brother and I listened to Lloyd Pettit do the Hawk games on WMAQ. We got a copy of this song on a 45. It was by the Dick Marx Orchestra. I remember Hamm's Beer being a big sponsor on WMAQ. We would tape Lloyd's "insane" goal calls and then replay them constantly. I got an XM radio and I swear that I listen mostly because Pat Hughes reminds me so much of Lloyd. I've converted to a Cubs fan and I'll be there in August. Thanks.
Great story, Brian! Lloyd was awesome, but now that we have Pat Foley coming back, it's gonna be great again! Hawks fans are excited he's coming back this season. Go to the Hawks' Website and click on "Multimedia" at the top / center of the home page. Then scroll down to "Audio Classics." You can download the original version of this song as you just heard it. Take care, and GO HAWKS!!
Just seen the White Sox beat da Cubs(9-3)on NASN.Waiting for the NY all-nighter second game at Shea, Mets winning the first at Y-Stadium(15-6).NASN rules!
Visited Chicago last yar wish i was at the Hangge-Uppe now!
Cheers for Chicago!the best city in the US.
Sorry but I'm a Mets& Islanders fan,but Ure town rocks!
Get some boys! We've got the Calder Memorial Trophy winner (should have been Toews) Pat Foley coming back this year and the Cubs winning the World Series! End the Wait!
It's the Billy Reay era! Has anyone seen those commercials on the NHL Network with that coach? In one he is wearing a fedora. I think that is a nod toward Billy Reay. BTW, this song is timeless! As great now as it was then. They have tried a couple modern theme songs, but they pale in comparison to the old classic.
Commit to the Indian...you gotta love that. I'm sure someone will say it's not P.C. but THIS IS HOCKEY! Hopefully the Hawks can sneak into 8th in the conference and play the Wings in the first round. THAT would be an amazing original six series. Good luck Hawks.
Today's game is such a piece of crap. THe heart and soul of the league is gone forever. It's a sissy game. It's supposed to be a Canadian and regional American sport. Hiring Bettman detroyed it. tearing down chicago Stadium ripped the heart out of the Hawks and the league. And I'm a Ranger fan.
your right!!tearing down the mad house on madison street was a fatel blow to the hawks...the new areana is like being at a funeral..also,all the old faithful fans were priced out of the place..replaced by yuppies and empty seats!!
I agree, Bettman destroyed the NHL, he wanted to turn it into the NBA and he reduced the fighting as though people didn't like it when in reality the fans have always loved fighting, only the mass media complained about fighting.
It's easy. Sixties and seventies- suits ties and fedoras. Mid seventies to today- trashy drunks who know nothing about the game. Who wants o sit with a bunch of inebriated mechanics waiting for a fight to break out. Simple as that.
You ask why the support hasn't been there. Two big reasons:
1. No home games on tv (until a few this year).
2. They have sucked the last several years.
That is why the Hawks have ranked so low in the Chicago sports scene. HOWEVER, the future is bright for the Hawks. We have Kane and Toews. Rocky is in charge and we will see more home games on tv. THERE IS A BUZZ for the Hawks and it will continue to grow.
I'm this song again and again! It's very sad this nice time was gone ......... Grat team and great game!!!!!!!!!! I love Hull brothers, Mikita, Wharram, Nesterenko, Stapleton, White, Glenn Hall, Magnuson, Martin, Vasko< Tony Esposito, even Reggie Fleming and many, many others. LET's GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ed Litzenberger,,,,tragically he was involved in a car crash on the Edens expressway that took the life of his wife in 1960. Although he returned and played on teh '61 Cup team, he was never the same and was soon out of teh NHL.
Great to see this momment in blackhawk history. I had just turned 8 yrs old and it was the 1st Stanley Cup Final I was really into. My older sister had gone to High School with Bobby Hull when he came to Woodstock Ont. to play Jr B hockey. A few years ago I was able to get Ed Litzenburger to autograph a colour photo of the 1961 Hawks at the Woodstock Sportsman dinner. Miss the Stadium.
It's true this team & the greats that played on it back then were the number one sport in Chicago! Bobby Hull was as popular as Payton or Jordan ever were & for a very good reason. 35 years later the players are gone, the stadium is no more & nearly all the fans have moved on. The only things left are those great uniforms & the curse of the Wirtz family. No wonder why the Hawks were voted the worst run organization in all of sports! So sad
those were the days, hockey was bigger than the bears, hull and mikita were more popular than butkus and sayers, santo and banks.......remember the roar, love the "alblum cut" of the theme song
With the talent on that team they should have won more than 1 cup! Even if today's players are bigger I'd still pick Hull and Makita to beat any cup winner today.
In 1966-67, the Blackhawks were the dominant team in the NHL - they had 94 points (almost 20 more than second place Montreal). In the first round - against Toronto - they simply couldn't score (enough) against Terry Sawchuk, who was at the top of his game.
Wow, that was great stuff. As a 'Hawks fan growing up what a thrill to watch all the talent. It has all been lost ever since the always sold out Stadium watched the Golden Jet head to Winnipeg. Certainly the game has changed but no one can deny those were truly great days in Chicago sports history.
we can only hope that all the wirtz's are in a plane and it crash's or thier boats sinks and they cant get off. untill then im not spending a dime of my time or money on those peices of dog shit. chicago blackhawks r.i.p.
I agree it would be great to hear "a shot, and a goal!" from Lloyd Petit. Also, I'd love to see Stapleton drop down on his knees in front of a slapshot. Don't know how he did that -- without a helmet -- and still lived to do it again.
I used to have a great small NEC transistor radio that could pull in 670 AM, with the Blackhawks games in the late 60s and early 70s . . . all the way from New
England! Which was tough, because New York had 660 AM
and Boston had 680 AM. Nowadays, radios can't pull
in one-fourth the distances!
And I still remember the Blackhawks sponsors: "Leon's
Terrific video. Coming from a Ranger fan who likes to see the original 6 do well, I hope Tallon and Toewes get the Hawks flying again...and Bill Wirtz dies already!
Agreed... But even worse, apathy has grown even worse. I went to a game last season prior to Christmas wearing a "Sutter" #27 sweater... the captain... not so much as a nod. Darryl was by no stretch flashy or sleek, but he showed up to play, he played every game as if it was his last... he was Chicago
Just think of all the great players Bill Wirtz has run outta town....starting with #9 Robert Marvin Hull, Jeremy Roenick, Doug Wilson, Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, Ed Belfour....it's really a shame what has happened to this franchise....but...they're not the only team in town as we have the AHL Wolves, the UHL Hounds, the USHL Steel, and the CSHL Force....pick your team and don't give Bill Wirtz a thin dime...
What great memories I have of those days. Tony ESposito , Magnusen , Mikita Hull etc. Only thing missing from this clip is Lloyd Petit announcing " A slapshot and a GOOOOOOOAAAAAL "!!! Never see those days again in Chicago while that worthless bastard Wirtz owns the team. Too bad , he has pretty much killed hockey in Chicago.
"Here Come The Hawks"... best heard played at the old Stadium, on the Barton organ, after a Chicago goal. When the Hawks scored, you got the train whistle, the siren, AND the organ. Absolutely nothing like it in hockey, then or now. Some things have been lost forever, unfortunately.
I couldn't agree more. I remember listening to the 1971 Hawks - Rangers Cup series on a headphone radio. That was, and still is, the most exiciting sports series ever to me. And now....who even remembers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito? Much less older players like Bill Mosienko, Eric Nesterenko, Tod Sloan, Ed Litzenberger? Hell, half these people haven't even heard of Jeremy Roenick, who just retired....sad, sad, sad...
I wish all sports were played with the grace as shown in these old clips. these days its all about the money and then the players might give their all. The Black Hawks will get another some day. I hope!
Did ya see them Elvis sideburns on Tony O? And oh, the hazzard of sittin' up in the 3rd balcony ($3.00 back then) when the Hull Bros' bald spots reflections blinded ya! What, no vidya of Maggie gettin' his face bloodied? Any tribute must inlcude Lloyd's "...a shot...and a goal!" Who's a "Joy Hawker!"
Stan "The Little Devil" Mikita and The GGGGGollldddennnn Jettttt Bobby Hull...a great team for sure!

Yeah I mean this is why the Blackhawks haven't had alot of Support:
1. They stopped putting Home games on WGN.
2. Wirtz was a cheap ass, and didn't want to spend money on anything new. (Jerseys, Lockers, ect...)
3. They haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1960.(Reason #2 is part of that.)
But now that Rocky took over, Hockey is coming back to Chicago! GO HAWKS!

And I'm a Ranger fan.
bdwyblu 4 years ago 4
your right!!tearing down the mad house on madison street was a fatel blow to the hawks...the new areana is like being at a funeral..also,all the old faithful fans were priced out of the place..replaced by yuppies and empty seats!!

I liked the 21 team league of the late 1980's, great division rivalries.
JimmySmers 3 years ago 3
I agree, Bettman destroyed the NHL, he wanted to turn it into the NBA and he reduced the fighting as though people didn't like it when in reality the fans have always loved fighting, only the mass media complained about fighting.
JimmySmers 3 years ago 2
Why aren't people in Chicago supporting the Black Hawks?
They've been there for what, 60 years?
Is this a new thing, or was the support never there? Find it very strange an original 6 team thats been there for so long has no fan base.

It's easy. Sixties and seventies- suits ties and fedoras. Mid seventies to today- trashy drunks who know nothing about the game. Who wants o sit with a bunch of inebriated mechanics waiting for a fight to break out. Simple as that.
jp5211 4 years ago
You ask why the support hasn't been there. Two big reasons:
1. No home games on tv (until a few this year).
2. They have sucked the last several years.
That is why the Hawks have ranked so low in the Chicago sports scene. HOWEVER, the future is bright for the Hawks. We have Kane and Toews. Rocky is in charge and we will see more home games on tv. THERE IS A BUZZ for the Hawks and it will continue to grow.
Of course...winning games helps as well.

Ed Litzenberger,,,,tragically he was involved in a car crash on the Edens expressway that took the life of his wife in 1960. Although he returned and played on teh '61 Cup team, he was never the same and was soon out of teh NHL.
parkman35 4 years ago
Great to see this momment in blackhawk history. I had just turned 8 yrs old and it was the 1st Stanley Cup Final I was really into. My older sister had gone to High School with Bobby Hull when he came to Woodstock Ont. to play Jr B hockey. A few years ago I was able to get Ed Litzenburger to autograph a colour photo of the 1961 Hawks at the Woodstock Sportsman dinner. Miss the Stadium.
altupper53 4 years ago 2
It's true this team & the greats that played on it back then were the number one sport in Chicago! Bobby Hull was as popular as Payton or Jordan ever were & for a very good reason. 35 years later the players are gone, the stadium is no more & nearly all the fans have moved on. The only things left are those great uniforms & the curse of the Wirtz family. No wonder why the Hawks were voted the worst run organization in all of sports! So sad
mrkrl 4 years ago
those were the days, hockey was bigger than the bears, hull and mikita were more popular than butkus and sayers, santo and banks.......remember the roar, love the "alblum cut" of the theme song
ehcmrn 4 years ago
With the talent on that team they should have won more than 1 cup! Even if today's players are bigger I'd still pick Hull and Makita to beat any cup winner today.
bashbrannigan 4 years ago
In 1966-67, the Blackhawks were the dominant team in the NHL - they had 94 points (almost 20 more than second place Montreal). In the first round - against Toronto - they simply couldn't score (enough) against Terry Sawchuk, who was at the top of his game.
BIDENorBUST 4 years ago
Wow, that was great stuff. As a 'Hawks fan growing up what a thrill to watch all the talent. It has all been lost ever since the always sold out Stadium watched the Golden Jet head to Winnipeg. Certainly the game has changed but no one can deny those were truly great days in Chicago sports history.

Then I guess some of your dreams are coming true as Bill Wirtz did of cancer a few weeks ago. Sad for the family, but happy for the Hawks fanbase.
hinduhitman 4 years ago 4
I agree it would be great to hear "a shot, and a goal!" from Lloyd Petit. Also, I'd love to see Stapleton drop down on his knees in front of a slapshot. Don't know how he did that -- without a helmet -- and still lived to do it again.
johnmeyer77 4 years ago
I used to have a great small NEC transistor radio that could pull in 670 AM, with the Blackhawks games in the late 60s and early 70s . . . all the way from New
England! Which was tough, because New York had 660 AM
and Boston had 680 AM. Nowadays, radios can't pull
in one-fourth the distances!
And I still remember the Blackhawks sponsors: "Leon's
Pork Sausuges"!

Terrific video. Coming from a Ranger fan who likes to see the original 6 do well, I hope Tallon and Toewes get the Hawks flying again...and Bill Wirtz dies already!
skmdmb17 4 years ago
Agreed... But even worse, apathy has grown even worse. I went to a game last season prior to Christmas wearing a "Sutter" #27 sweater... the captain... not so much as a nod. Darryl was by no stretch flashy or sleek, but he showed up to play, he played every game as if it was his last... he was Chicago
jayc70sox 4 years ago

Too bad , he has pretty much killed hockey in Chicago.

yes he has...

RobDog65 4 years ago 2
I couldn't agree more. I remember listening to the 1971 Hawks - Rangers Cup series on a headphone radio. That was, and still is, the most exiciting sports series ever to me. And now....who even remembers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito? Much less older players like Bill Mosienko, Eric Nesterenko, Tod Sloan, Ed Litzenberger? Hell, half these people haven't even heard of Jeremy Roenick, who just retired....sad, sad, sad...
Staszu13 4 years ago
I STILL remember Mikita, Litzenberger, Elmer "Moose"
Valo, Glenn Hall . . . and I'm from New England.
