Shakespeare - Henry VI, part 3 (1983 TV) - end of play

Every time I visit the Tower of London I visit poor Henry VI's chapel, where he was supposed killed - and think of Benson's interpretation of him. Henry VI: a man badly out of synch with his times...

Bloody Wars of the Roses: can't keep track of the dead and dying without a scorecard (3 Somersets, 2 Cliffords, etcetera). Lovely, stomping wardance, in which Richard can't/doesn't join.

The murder dialogue between Richard of Gloucester and the victory speech of King Edward IV belong to my favourite parts in the play; Shakespeare is quite gifted with making fitting mythological and animalistic comparisons to his figures and their action; mowing down enemies is such a one and the comparison between Daedalus and Icarus with Henry VI and his son Edward is another; lovely to imagine the Duke of York as King Minos and his son as the sea.

@rexel666 You are so right. Peter Benson brought real soul and sympathy to the character - and he looked perfect, with that medieval face of his. I also liked how he began one of the plays (I forget which one) with a song in his fine tenor voice. A wonderful actor... I would have liked to see more of him. BTW: He appears in the first Black Adder comedy...

im looking for a film that was made in the 80s based on a shakespear play but i cant remmember what it was, it starts off with a narrator telling the story and a leader of sorts marries a french queen in the end, i also think theres some singing in it by the actors but i dont think its a musical. if anyone can help me it'd be much appreciated. i really liked that film what i saw of it.

You might be looking for Henry V by Kenneth Branagh (1989) if you haven't found it already.

yeah your right. thats the one i was looking for, someone told me about it on another page. its a very good film from what i saw but i didnt see all of it yet...ill buy it if i can find it! thanks

At that point in the text Richard is identified as "Gloucester" since that's what he is in real time: once Edward becomes king after the death of his Dad, he makes his kid brother Richard the Duke of Gloucester (end of act II of the play).

Shakespeare, or perhaps the typesetter of the folio and quartos which form the modern sources of the play, took care to track the titles of characters in the hurly burly of the civil war chronicled.
