Although the end result may be robot insects, lab research isnt like tinkering in your backyard. We take VERY small steps forward, developing all sorts of technology along the way. One student might spend a 5 year graduate career just developing a battery that can power this thing for more than a few mins. That is research. And no, its not our business how someone uses a battery. You can use a knife to cut a cake or kill a child. That doesnt mean we shouldnt have invented the knife.

The idea is that these can be used to go inside buildings, caves, and city areas to find out information without risking human lives. If a chemical weapon were to go off in a city, these could find survival victims. This is simply one example. I think part of the problem is this news agency choose a very poor title for this video: "American insect Terminators" and really spun the story about 'killer robots' when they are not.

The core principles and maths of AI have not advanced much in 20 years. The ability for a computer to understand real time organic environments is just not possible right now.
I believe this will change if the likes of Pranav Mistrys SixthSense tech goes mainstream and the gap between the digital and organic world gets closer, but until then, there is no system that could fly even one of these insect bots in the real world, let alone a whole hive of them.

This is truly scary. If a robot misidentifies a target, it's no different than any modern warfare. This is sick. It gives the potential to spy on people's privacy, and don't say that is not an option. This is not any better than people losing their lives, because if you are the target, guess what? The US army funds several research and development projects. In fact the Army just funded research on an vacine for HIV in Thailand, so just because the US army funds a program dosen't mean it's for military purposes. Also, this would be to save the lives of American military personnel also if it's succesful. The US will always fund advanced R&D and I don't see anything wrong with having a definate edge over any potential enemy.

Also the fact that people in 2007 claimed to have seen flying dragonfly type devices at an anti-war protest is also interesting. To the extent that this is not hype and psy-op disinfo, this technology needs to be leaked and studied.
