To me they symbolize one of the greatest American traditions. The peaceful transfer of power that has characterized every change in administration in US history.
It's something we take for granted but this is an example of how our nation is a leader. For all our faults this tradition is something to be proud of, some people around the World don't understand what a peaceful democratic transfer of power looks like.
Hillary was introduced as "Senator" as a honorific title (she was actually at that time a former Senator). She wasn't Secretary of State yet, because Obama could not officially sign her nomination papers until after he was sworn in).
@JWade29 I've lived here in our Nation's Capitol for over 17 years now & I've never seen such "calm" & reverent 'observance' of a day as President Obama's Inauguration. People seemed to be overly friendly, patient, helpful & respectful towards one another. Even the multitude of homeless people who hang around the monuments demonstrated pride. There were no murders recorded in DC that day .. & that's an accomplishment! :-)
How come they didn't announce former first lady Monica Lewinsky and the presidential kneepads when Clinton came out?

Former Presidents Carter Bush Clinton and Gore were there. Yes I said President Gore because he was elected by the American people in 2000.

@hermitcrab8518 The Presidency is decided by the electoral college, as it always has.

I love the March of English Folk Song Suite ("Seventeen Come Sunday" and "Dives and Lazarus") being played with the Clinton arrival.
