I'm just asking because I think the title in this video is misleading. This music clearly has African influences but to ignore it and say it is only Spanish and Indigenous is misleading.
And what makes you think that "clearly" have african influences?... I mean, what's the evidence besides just saying that there were africans in mexico too, and giving this as "evidence', which is truly misleading.
Many of the slaves who ended up in Veracruz came from the Mbamba region of Angola. Where do you think the origin of the word Bamba comes from? It's African. The marimbula (thumb piano) is from Africa. The dance (moving mainly the bottom part of the body) was common amongst slaves as they were forced not to dance. This is sort of a tap dance or a dance of defiance. Listen to some music from Angola and you will hear it. (v=tN63QrktPrA).
lovingit1000 where are you from? It is interesting what you say. Perhaps this tapping could have been a mode of communication also, it is amazing what the human spirit does for survival. Yes, we know that the marimba is an african musical instrument.
90% of the slave trade went to Latin America. 5% of the slave trade went to the United States. Something that is forgotten is 5% of the slave trade went also to Mexico..the same amount as ended up in the United States. The Afro-Mexicans mixed heavily early with the indigenous people and the Spaniards.
yes in fact. this dance has African influence. Veracruz has a museum that narrrates the important contribution of black slaves to Mexico. They are part of our racial make up and history. Many Mexicans are not well educated about our history. The museum in Chiapas also acerts this contribution. These people are not historians, but we are taught about the racial make up of new spain(Mexico) during the colonial period in elementary school. Yes, Mexico h
Thank you. I don't mean to take away from indigenous or Spanish influences in Mexico, but to be fair and acknowledge also that there are African influences in this country as well and this is one.
its true in fact Son Jarocho has its roots with the african slaves brought to Veracruz in Colonial times, Bamba apparently is a village in africa and the african slaves would song to their homeland thats why the song is called la Bamba
