The Fairness Act sounds unworkable for a lot of reasons, but I strongly disagree with Rep. Pence's suggestion that the commercial success of conservative talk radio hosts somehow vindicates conservative values or shows that the country is conservative. It just reflects the sad fact that trash sells. It's the same reason that junk like the National Enquirer and tabloid magazines sell.
The Bush Administration is clearly not in favor of free speech or other civil rights. I don't think Bush, Cheney, etc. are true conservatives though. I would characterize them as closer to radicals, prepared to go to extreme measures, including rolling back constitutional rights and pursuing an unprovoked war, in order to pursue their agenda.

First of all as usual, factually wrong.The law applies to T.V. and radio and you need only to allow time for opposing views at some time in your programming. Not on every show. It worked so well the right wing needed a law to even the field in the market place and allow for the ideology that hey want expressed to get a "fair hearing." He's convinced me. The Fairness Doctrine sounds like a good idea. Both sides of an issue should be heard. The air waves are owned by the people, not just the giant corporations. If these radio stations are so poor, how can they afford to pay Limbaugh 35 million dollars a year? Radio will not dump Limbaugh - he makes too much money for them. I'm probably older than the average YouTube poster, and I remember pre-87 radio very well.
I don't care one way or the other about Rush Limbaugh's career, but the information given here is correct to my memory.
There just wasn't any political dialog of the type we see today. It wasn't workable under the old format and regulations.
Radio is a much more vibrant and healthy medium now.

last time i read it, there was no right to talk radio in the constitution. i think the fairness doctrine is well necessary because all it has gotten us so far are snarling idiots left and right. this isn't an issue of free speech, this is an issue of public decency. PS: music can be divisive too? no sh!t. i'd rather listen to music i don like, than to rush limbaugh lecturing us about the evils of liberals.

The Fairness Act sounds unworkable for a lot of reasons, but I strongly disagree with Rep. Pence's suggestion that the commercial success of conservative talk radio hosts somehow vindicates conservative values or shows that the country is conservative. It just reflects the sad fact that trash sells. It's the same reason that junk like the National Enquirer and tabloid magazines sell.

The Bush Administration is clearly not in favor of free speech or other civil rights. I don't think Bush, Cheney, etc. are true conservatives though. I would characterize them as closer to radicals, prepared to go to extreme measures, including rolling back constitutional rights and pursuing an unprovoked war, in order to pursue their agenda.

Honestly, I agree that the "fairness" act BS. I'm a liberal, but I find the idea repugnant that places like Comedy Central would have to give way to conservatives alongside people like Stewart and Colbert.
I love that line about how liberals can't maintain a profit. Look at NPR! They scrape by, but they do it without any corporate advertising at all.
