J'avais organisé un festival des frères Fleischer au C.A.C.Voltaire de Genève et tout le monde chantait avec la "Bouncing Ball" ! Un grand souvenir...
From the early days of animation, when cartooning wasn't dumbed-down for small children. This is for adults, and very far-out surrealist stuff with several drug references. ("She messed around with a bloke named Smoky. She loved him though he was cokey." And "kicking the gong around" means smoking opium.)
'Hasenpfeffer' - it's German. It's a rabbit dish. It comes from the root word 'Hase' (Plural 'Hasen') which is the equivalent of 'Hare' in English, and Pfeffer or Peppered; so its a peppered rabbit stew. Try it with spätzle. Es schmeckt gut.
These type of cartoons are creepy in a way. I don't know if it's because they're so antique and the way it was made comes off as creepy but to watch this in a dark room by yourself= really scary.
Call me crazy, but that dance Cab Calloway does is kind of sexy, I know he's been dead for probably forever, but there is something about the way he moves, I dunno.
This cartoon alone explains so many elements that went into the film "Forbidden Zone." If anyone chooses to watch that movie, they should watch this extraordinary animation.
I felt the same way after watching this. It gave me an apreciation on a whole new level for Elfmans work. Like I had been missing a key influance! I Love the forbidden zone.
who else saw the ghost with the propeller to hold it up? And who didn't those jail ghosts float out of the prison seeing as they were capable? And why bother executing them? And why is Betty's dad(?) such a bad cook? Never mind! cool, dude!
It's incredible how it looks like an InuYasha anime. She is a human and he is a dog. The same with Kagome and Inuyasha. Also, the way they get chased by "youkais" in the cavern similar as heel to an Inuyasha episode with Sango and Miroku. And in the begining, "She's Leaving Home" from The Beatles.
i love this old stuff. especially the constant movement. and the odd cell painting screw up. which we dont go for anymore. i think the producers thought at that time "if it aint moving its boring so keep it movin!"
the walrus creature looks like mostly rotoscoped cab calloway.

@icps86 I love the way his body starts rotating when he screams, "I don't habit! I don't habit!")
cliffwalkinfool 1 year ago
@icps86 It's a takeoff on a Yiddish accent, "Vy von't you eat your hossenfefer?!?"
I really need to check on Wikipedia and Google to see if that's an actual food or not ;-)

Now, no ones going to tell me that the Fleischer brothers and their animators didn't have a ready supply of good quality reefer kicking about.
