  • OMG, this is awesome! Both of these guys are legends.

I liked how Jobim actually stopped playing for a second to applaud Herbie. lol

  • NO EDIT to remove 2 comments that came up by accident!

  • However, I stand by my comment.......it is how I FEEL!

  • BUT, it does not mean I should not have made my comment on how I felt for Antonio Carlos Jobim! I feel my comment still stands!

  • Sorry chrispurchase! I apologize to you and all the other's who commented before and after me! I do and always did like Herbie Hancock! Even have some old records of his in my possession!

  • legends

  • このハービーさん抑えていますね。大御所との連弾気を使っているようです。

    やっぱりジョビン 最高です。

  • Hey what year is this? great music THANK YOU!

  • Magic................

  • My first time actually seeing Antonio Carlos Jobim and it is today! I am viewing every video of him for I just discovered him on ITunes and loved his beautiful music, only to find out today he is gone!

This is my 4th video this morning and I'm sorry to say, did not like what HH did to his song! It was unrehearsed I read, but to me he went a little to far and ruined a wonderful performance by Antonio! I am not a musician, but it look's to me, HH messed up the entire band! Bless ACJ!!

  • @jazzableful what you talkin bout... Herbie is amazing

  • I caught this concert on cable many years ago and haven't been able to find it anywhere until now. I've worn out the vhs tape I recorded it on. Thanks for posting this awesome concert.

  • 凄いメンバー!(@@)

    いいねぇ~! 違うねぇ~!!

  • most important concert I've ever been! Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Gal Costa and Wayne Shorter also performed that day...

  • Herbie is the only reason to watch this video.

  • I'd have sold my house to be present at this concert ! My two ever favourites together ! The best ever posting on youtube. Thank so mcuh !

  • goose bumps when Tom applauded Herbie

I will upload a photo to flickr with this link in honor of Japan

Thank you for the wonderful upload

    Guy

    gmayster01 on flickr too

  • @gmayster01 Indeed, hold your head high Antonio--after all, you wrote the tune. No matter that Herbie can blow away anyone when he chooses, he was born to do that, as you were born to write beautiful tunes.

  • Don't find Herbie's solo hilarious... it's just plain SCARY!!!!!!! What a great man

  • marvelous! 連弾かと思いきや,片手で歌い上げる Herbie の恐ろしさ! Ron Carter が誤ってブリッジにつっこんでしまうミスなど,もうどうでもよくなってしまう.しかもボサノバ.

  • GENIUS

  • Antonio Brasileiro! That's that!!!

  • Herbie may be fast but it's Jobim who churned out those amazing songs and melodies that are so loved and played over again and again all over the world!

  • its great to hear jobim stretch out a little and you can tell he wished he could go farther out with it, then herbie comes up and smokes that motha

  • antonio carlos te tiraria la goma! q idolo!!!

  • awesome. wish george duke could have sat in :)

  • The old guy on guitar is loving Herbie's solo!

  • An amazing moment in music! Thanks for posting!

  • hancock's solo is like a mental orgasm here

  • Really greats Hancock solo

  • Incredible

    God save Bossa Nova

  • F A N T A S T I C O !!!!!!!!

  • Nossa!! muito bom,

  • Herbie Hancock is Rockin' it!!!

  • Só...tudo de BOM

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Nice. Very Nice Herbie. I wish I could play like that impromptu

  • Quite unusual, but very interesting! Thanks for posting!

  • I do believe that's Ron Carter on Bass! :)

  • That's right:)

  • And that's Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar.

  • @HipsterKiller And, that's Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar.

  • @HipsterKiller; I think Carter is a little like Jerry West. You can tell who it is even from his silhouette.

  • This is absolutely a fantastic session of some master musicians. Is Oscar Castro Neves having fun or what?

  • Herbie is just amazing.

  • outstanding, herbie is the man

  • Hell yeah! As you said, .... look ma, 1 hand!

  • Amazing!

  • Fucking Herbie, you're the man.

  • agreed

  • Wow - Fantastic video. Two jazz greats, and a beautiful song :)

  • wonderful

  • Hilarious-no, cool!

  • herbie arrazou, mas o Tom q criou. =]

    Dois genios!

  • Can't expect Herbie to just be happy playing strings, can you? And i just love how he effortlessly did it to!!!

  • YEAH.

  • Simply Beautiful!

  • Rio de Janeiro Song ...Valeus Jobim

  • Ohhhhh man, what a solo!

  • from what year is this?

  • This was Jobim's last recorded concert. It also featured Shirley Horn, Gal Costa, and John Hendricks. It was just amazing...

  • They're lovin it!! Look at Oscar's face when Herbie solo's.....they're all on a 'wave'!! Frickin brilliant!

  • Is that Alex Acuna on percussion ? Who is the drummer on this ?

  • I think drummer is Havey Mason

  • Tom, I hope you're having good time in heaven!

    :)

  • Beautiful!!!

  • isto e uma prova que musica nao tem fronteira e uma ligua universal toque sua poesia !

  • The accoustic guitarist appears to be Oscar Castro Nueves. He is the greatest comping brazilian guitarist I've heard.

  • 2 of the big names in jazz!

  • incredible.

  • Jobim, one of my musical Gods!!!!

  • Thanks for posting - terrific!

  • herbie is great in this, goes double time in the middle which was totally unrehearsed... as a piano player myself, if herbie had done that solo just with the left hand i would have stopped playing!

  • For RR...the sexiest guy in the world...S

  • That's some of the most elegantly sexy music ever written. Check out Toninho Horta...he's continuing the magic of Brazilian music.

  • TWO of the greatest composers of this era.

"So close your eyes for that's a lovely way to be. Aware of things your heart alone was meant to see."

  • This song is actually an amalgamation of Wave and another Jobim tune called Tide (written on the same changes as Wave).

Most of the arrangement that Jobim plays here is directly from Tide.

  • Herbie just sits right down next to Jobim in mid melody and turns the song into a jazz fantasy --- with only one hand! Man!!

  • Ron Carter is a genius. They are laughing because they are being touched by something much higher and more beautiful. You can call it a "zone" if you'd like.

  • haha they are all having a right laugh

  • HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!! Viva Jobi, and the Jazz Brothers!

  • That is Ron Carter, right? I don't think he messed up at all. If you're familiar with his style, he does a lot of incidental notes and "bombs."

  • Never seen this video, thanks for posting, one question did bass got messed up on 2:27? and some weird chords after 3:00

  • Yeah, the bass player starts to play a bridge and comes back right after to second A part of the tune, it could even happen to the greatest players like Ron Carter sometimes)

  • You seem to be a real musician, would you have more of Herbie, may be his years with Miles?

    Thanks

  • @Face202 yes but when Herbie starts it was already the 2nd A (Jobim played AABA A and then Herbie came over). Herbie holds back to see where they go.

Why is the pitch of this in Bb when they're clearly playing in D? Tape speed I guess.

  • @Face202 sounded allright to me

  • well what actually happened around 2:27 is that Ron Carter wanted to go into a double time samba feel, but apparently it was too early and the samba double time feel then comes at 2:48 after the cue is given.

  • the changes might've been a bit different from the original plobaly

  • I'm sure Herbie doesn't need a chart on this tune --I wonder why he brought it over?
