Sorry chrispurchase! I apologize to you and all the other's who commented before and after me! I do and always did like Herbie Hancock! Even have some old records of his in my possession!
My first time actually seeing Antonio Carlos Jobim and it is today! I am viewing every video of him for I just discovered him on ITunes and loved his beautiful music, only to find out today he is gone!
This is my 4th video this morning and I'm sorry to say, did not like what HH did to his song! It was unrehearsed I read, but to me he went a little to far and ruined a wonderful performance by Antonio! I am not a musician, but it look's to me, HH messed up the entire band! Bless ACJ!!
I caught this concert on cable many years ago and haven't been able to find it anywhere until now. I've worn out the vhs tape I recorded it on. Thanks for posting this awesome concert.
@gmayster01 Indeed, hold your head high Antonio--after all, you wrote the tune. No matter that Herbie can blow away anyone when he chooses, he was born to do that, as you were born to write beautiful tunes.
Herbie may be fast but it's Jobim who churned out those amazing songs and melodies that are so loved and played over again and again all over the world!
herbie is great in this, goes double time in the middle which was totally unrehearsed... as a piano player myself, if herbie had done that solo just with the left hand i would have stopped playing!
Ron Carter is a genius. They are laughing because they are being touched by something much higher and more beautiful. You can call it a "zone" if you'd like.
Yeah, the bass player starts to play a bridge and comes back right after to second A part of the tune, it could even happen to the greatest players like Ron Carter sometimes)
well what actually happened around 2:27 is that Ron Carter wanted to go into a double time samba feel, but apparently it was too early and the samba double time feel then comes at 2:48 after the cue is given.

This song is actually an amalgamation of Wave and another Jobim tune called Tide (written on the same changes as Wave).
Most of the arrangement that Jobim plays here is directly from Tide.
lesmizzle 3 years ago 2
Herbie just sits right down next to Jobim in mid melody and turns the song into a jazz fantasy --- with only one hand! Man!!

That is Ron Carter, right? I don't think he messed up at all. If you're familiar with his style, he does a lot of incidental notes and "bombs."

Never seen this video, thanks for posting, one question did bass got messed up on 2:27? and some weird chords after 3:00

You seem to be a real musician, would you have more of Herbie, may be his years with Miles?
Thanks
fusionjazzband 3 years ago
@Face202 yes but when Herbie starts it was already the 2nd A (Jobim played AABA A and then Herbie came over). Herbie holds back to see where they go.
Why is the pitch of this in Bb when they're clearly playing in D? Tape speed I guess.
