shenmue is a great game, i can't believe some people actually hate the game! fortunately i am from europe so i was able to enjoy shemue 2 when it first came out, i still remember the good times i had playing shenmue 1&2 i am just angry that sega never finished the game and left the story unfinished like they did.
i love your vids johhny... i just found out about you but have seen ALL your vids now, keep it up, you need to take this channel to the next level, you deserve to be picked up by someone and paid for what you do!!!!!!!!!!!!
my cousin bought this when it first came out. it was one of the best games i have ever played in my life.. its just so sad that they werent able to finish the trilogy.
i remember seeing coverage of shenmue in a magazine in the 90s but i never went to check it out.oh btw,i spotted an article dating of january 2012(yep,this year!) talking about there MAYBE being a potential Shenmue 3.there's an interview of Yu Suzuki mentioning this, thought you'd like to know
to happy console games I would like to say. shenmue didn't bom. it sold 1.5 million copies for the dreamcast which meant it was the 3rd best selling dreamcast game after chu chu rocket and sonic adventure. shenmue 2 was also very popular in the west. it sold well in europa and was so popular as an import in the usa that even retailers like eb imported the game and sold them with a bootdisc. the xbox version bombed yes because why would a sega fan play on xbox. that's for shooters and other shit
this review really nails it right on the head. and the game has got a huge cultfollowing. like with blade runner this game was away ahead of it's time. look now at games like heavy rain where you can brush your teeth. well shenmue started it all but people thought it was boring. review sites often hammered the game. yet now nobody ever says a bad word about the game. also shenmue should be seen in the frame of the entire saga. shenmue 1 was truly a prologue. a warm up. in 2 it all changed
Shenmue City bombed, was taken down after year. All it showed was further reassurance that nobody cares about Shenmue anymore. Probability of Shenmue 3 down 30%.
@ShadowRave that's because in japan nobody cares about shenmue. in the west people do and it's there where the cultfollowing is. shenmue 2 is the most imported videogame of all time in the usa and shenmue 1 is the 3rd best selling dreamcast game ever. of which 70% in the west.
@drunkensailor112 Yeah true, Shenmue sold 380,000 copies in Japan compared to 520,000 in USA, Japan still outsold Europe (240,000). Shenmue 2 was the huge bomb only 150,000 copies in Japan.
I've never been sucked into a game the same way I was with Shenmue. I was totally captivated at a level that has never before, never since, or will never be matched. That was Christmas break in 2000, during my 8th grade Christmas break, and since then, I have basically been in love with this game. Totally fucking amazing game.
this game blew my mind when i was young. totally agree with everything this dude had to say. i had never played anything like it. next to ocarina of time, shenmue was one of the first truly epic immersifying gaming experiences i had growing up and it will always hold a special place in my heart
@SCRATCHMASTERDAL - There are quite a few articles about it. It was announced around October 2011, but looking a bit deeper Yu Suzuki in an interview (jan 2012) says he wants to make it but Sega are showing no interest. But in another interview he has hinted that he is moving to aquire the rights. And in another interview he says he things sega IS going to let him make Shenmue 3. What the hell is going on? @ilovepie947 yes, but it's a lot better than the shitty english voice acting. and you can use yourt shenmue 1 save file and play it on vga which makes it look a lot better than the xbox versions
ROLL ON SHENMUE 3!! (if it ever happens) what a game. Me and a friend are mid run-through. Such a good game. In retrospect it was definately a milestone in videogame history. The open world environment was such a new idea at the time. I remembr a frined actully having it when it came out, absolutely blew me off my feet. @humanice2 Depends. If you think story-based, intricately-detailed open-world games that have deep fighting systems and has dozens of gambling minigames, collectibles, and arcade games boring and not fun, it probably isn't the game for you.
It was genuinely a quality series and not much games today are like Shenmue. To be honest, I would rather play a modern take of Shenmue over titles that tend to be media hogs yet deliver more of the same thing every installment.
@xXMikotoNakadaiXx well I can't respond to that because I haven't played it, I'll probably buy it and really hope it's a good game, I hope it's not a game where I'm completely lost and walking around not knowing what to do for days of playing it before anything happens in the game, and the guy in the video says shenmue 2 is better.. if I remember correctly, too lazy to watch it again.
@humanice2 I often group Shenmue 1 and 2 together as one game, but they both have unique atmospheres that makes them different enough from each other. I see Shenmue 1 as a relaxing start to the series set in the main character's hometown while Shenmue 2 is the beginning meat of the story.
The thing about Shenmue 1 is, you're not really ever lost in the game. It's possible to plow through the game, but people CHOOSE to slack off because it gives you so much freedom.
(continue) Shenmue 2's case is kind of different though. It takes time to get familiar with the locations in Hong Kong. The only times you're really lost is because Hong Kong is such a big city, but that never really bothers anyone because there are so many cool distractions anyway (and you could just get someone to lead you to the destination you're suppose to be at if you're truly lost). LOL
Great video. Good memories and great times. I just wanted to point out, that technically, Shenmue did not bomb; it sold very well. Over 1.2 million copies. The problem was, the first game alone cost $47 million to make ($64 million in 2011 dollars), which basically means that everyone who bought a Dreamcast would have had to buy Shenmue for the game to break even. Meaning there are over a million of us out here pining to get our hands on the rest of the Shenmue saga.
I'm assuming if you were to play Shenmue 2 it either wouldn't make sense or it would spoil things from the first. I have 2, but not 1 and I really want to play them haha
I cn't take it no ore.I'm waiting on a Dreamcast form ebay, which I'm going to put in an Arcade machine I'm fixing up, but I'm playing this first, I'm actually looking forward to this NOW, rather than Battlefield 3 or MW3.I had a Dreamcast at release which I sold, I've never played Shnemue yet, which I can't believe since I love Sega.Hurry up !!!!!!! Great video mate.
I still haven't gotten over the fact that there's no end to Shenmue. It has to be one of my top 3 games of my lifetime. All of your experiences seem very similar to mine. Thanks. Greaty great review.
@coolbuddydude1 Sorry to say but in this day and age, most will use emulators, however it wont give the true feeling, I strongly suggest to find a Dreamcast for cheap, and get Shenmue 1 from eBay or Amazon. Shenmue 2 is hard to get on dreamcast since its only for European or Asian dreamcast consoles, there is Shenmue 2 on the original Xbox which can be got for extremely cheap, the voice acting of the Xbox version is pretty awful though
This in my eyes is still the BEST game ever made in my eyes story, gameplay, voice acting everything, I dont even compare current gen games to this I can just replay it over and over, still waiting on shenmue 3, I still have hope!!!!!!!
and i wish there was at least an emulator out there that could save dreamcast states because i've always wondered how QTE scenes would play out if i would manage to beat them all.
though i suppose it might not be a good idea to revisit shenmue 1 & 2 because i remember how shitty it felt when it was announced there isn't going to be an ending to the series... still does -_-
i also didn't know shenmue 2 dc was available pal only. oblivious european that i am ;)
that kid "wanna play with me" - that's a pretty bad insinuation :P
when i played that, i didn't have any thoughts along those lines... ryo is still pretty young after all and it's obviously a tiny neighborhood where everybody knows everybody... alright, it's weird the kid would call him "mister" then but still... :)
there is no sadder tale in the whole of video games history than the death of the shenmue series. yu suzuki will do it, sega will do it for the right money. if there is a massive shenmue fan billionaaire out there they could make it happen tomorrow. they just dont want to lose that money..
I'll always remember my friend watching me play Shenmue for hours and telling me how lame it was. Eventually, I banned him from my house for a view days, played through the game without any distractions, and probably had the best video game experience I've ever had.
in 3:0 when he's talking about walking and listening to the music and thinking wow this is going to be a great game I almost started crying because I haven't had that feeling since I played shenmue for the first time
So I just got a copy of Shenmue 2 Euro import and am I correct in thinking that it can work on an American Dreamcast? The console can't seem to read it and I really wanted to play this game tonight so is there wisdom that can be bestowed on here I just want to complete the chapter and become depressed due it's lack of a third seque
my cousin lent me his DC and he had shenmue but i wasnt into it. i was spoiled by gta 3 so i was expecting a gta like game, so i stopped playing. today i played for 10 hours straight. im on disc 2 now i wonder what happens now. the voice acting is pretty bad though, but it is so hilarious.
I just want to say after watching this I played Shenmue for the first time and completed both games in about 5 days, they were terrific games. I found the final disc of Shenmue 2 a little dull and boring, but apart from that they were both great.
I think Yu Suzuki and SEGA/Sammy should do Shenmue III as a long term pet project. Keep the old graphical style and even release it on the Dreamcast as a special edition (which true fans WILL buy)! The main release could be an Xboxlive or PS3 digital release (the main source of revenue) and as it is a. Slow Burning (not having a deadline etc. would save money) b. Using old tech c. Mostly digital - I think they would make enough profit for it to be worthwhile.. Any opinions on that?
Is the best game on dreamcast , i'ts a shame that yu suzuki have to pay whit his prestige the poor sales of the series but still there's hope.
I started collecting retro game systems a few weeks ago, got a Dreamcast and of course Shenmue! I had heard about it for many years but hadn't actually played it. Took me 2 playing sessions to finish it over last weekend.
What a great game, I can see why some people were bored with this, but not me. Actually I could have done without the fighting parts and just play the adventure parts! I just hope they would have done the speach in Japanese and text in English option like in the second game...
@Retrofinn I agree, I think they put too much fighting in the second game, and I would definitely have preferred Japanese voices for the first game too. I liked it so much I'm going to play it again, a real classic.
Wow, I hate to admit it but this video got me all misty eyed.
I remember that edition of the Official Dreamcast Magazine and grabbing it the day it came out. I remember when anyone would come over that video would go back on for another play.
It's a crime that this series can go without a finish, even if it was just a mockup movie like they did for the xbox version, which i watched in full even though i finished the first many times.
definitely an amazing game to review Johnny! I enjoyed the first shenmue and have been a fan ever since i have played it! it definitely goes on my top 10 list of best Dreamcast games of all time! good review man!
Ya know, Shenmue City is being released in Japan only in December (on PC). It will be Ys Net's first game. Ys Net is small video game production group founded by Yu Suzuki. Tell all of your friends in Japan to play it (free w/micro-transactions) because if it does well, we may get Shenmue III!
so...why dosent sega release shenmue and shenmue II HD on PSN or xbox live. They could make a really big hype at TGS and get new players. Maybe even make small changes for those who didnt like the series. This probably wont happen but..... if it does and if it sales well...its probably our only hope for shenmue 3...
I prefered the japanese dialogue with subtitles version of the game, the english dubbed version sometimes felt to me like it was spoiling the beauty of the game.
@rubics02 I feel like the English in Shenmue 1 gave it a certain atmosphere. That, combined with the dull colours and calm, ambient music gave it an aura that made it special in a sense. That said, Shenmue 2 didn't contain any of the dull colours of ambient music that the first did, and so, to me, English wouldn't have fit. Basically what I'm saying is English works for Shenmue 1, but not 2.
I loved the freedom that enabled me to control the character to go anywhere and interact with anyone. Sometimes, I would just let the character stand still and just enjoy the music and ever-changing weather. Although Shenmue 2 is my fav in terms of the no. of different environment that the player goes thru as story progresses.
Awesome review man, I felt myself agreeing with you on so many points. I loved exploring and experiencing the world of Shenmue 1 and I also felt the last section of Shenmue 2 in Guilin was pure magic.
man this video was great, i love your review of Shenmue, perfectly captures how I feel about the series... it is by far the best gaming experience I've ever had in my life, and I have had a lot... Shenmue is great, I implore people who are looking for a great experience to play this series to its entirety... you WILL NOT regret it
Great review, i just finished the first one again it was ten years ago since i played it first ,i never got the second one but hope to pick it up soon ,dreamcast was and still is an amazing console
Man, I wish there where more gamers like you, you explain it perfectly, I bought Shenmue 2 on the Xbox and was soooo gutted when it said to be continued... But I enjoyed the scenarios, the beautiful countryside, it was excellent
superb review dude...........everything you said is so true....amazing game..anybody that hasnt played or owns the game........do yourself a favour and treat yourself........
It's not impossible for the series to be revived, it just may need to be sold to another company that believes there is something to the series. Look at Fallout, Fallout 1-2 were not financially successful games, then Bethesda bought the IP because they believed they could make it into something economically feasible while also continuing the universe, and it worked. Bethesda saved Fallout. Maybe Sega can sell Shenmue to Rockstar...
That's actually a pretty good idea! The fact alone that it's done by Rockstar would make a lot of people buy it. Furthermore Shenmue is similar in a way to what they stand for. But otherwise I doubt that Sega would sell it. And also I don't know wether Rockstar would continue the original story.
will i miss out if i dont get them both for dreamcast? what does the save file bring over? really want to try these games out but dont know if i want to try and set my dreamcast up to play pal
@leblancious you can get the US shenmue 1, and play shenmue 2 on xbox or get the pal version... you don't miss out on much for the transfer... the only thing you really lose in not doing the transfer is your collection of toys
Your reviews are the best because you use your own personal experience and PASSION for games instead of all the poor attempts by gaming sites to provide "unbiased" shallow day-1 reviews with useless fuckin scores!
And they never really have an understanding into the deep aspects of games from the viewpoint of a dedicated players perspective who've spent time playing to the end.
I ♥ your values around video games, real gaming art is about emotions, nostalgia, amazing experiences and ADVENTURE!
its good to see im not the only shenmue fan but there are 934 others thanx for reviewing shenmue brought back many memories but also made me sad again T_T
Did you hear that Yu Suzuki stated that Sega will allow him to make Shenmue 3? I hope they re-release the first 2 on whatever system Shenmue 3 will be on, so data can be imported across the 3
Shenmue actually replicates real life better than other open-world games, a quality that I've always found attractive in it. There's always so much to do, and it's not because of a bunch random side-missions and Video Game Cruelty Potential of that you always see in Rockstar games.
I just got my copy of Shenmue. I could never afford to get a Dreamcast back in the day, but picked one up for 26$ and got the game complete with manuals for 7$. I've been waiting 11 years to play this game and am very excited to start it. Well, time to put this sick little puppy in and get to it! I love your vids by the way, keep it up man. Awesome stuff on here.
it's odd. it seems like in exchange for physics for falling over yourself and what not, the interaction aspect of games like this seems to have diminished. that being said mass effect is one of the better efforts but to see a world like this on current gen systems with a similar examination mechanic and little nuances like the capsule machines etc would be amazing.
GUESS WHAT SHENMUE FANS?! IN A RECENT ISSUE OF RETROGAMER MAGAZINE, IT SAYS THAT SEGA WILL LET AM2 & YU SUZUKI DEVELOP SHENMUE 3, AS LONG AS IT CAN BE FUNDED BY EITHER MICROSOFT, SONY OR NINTENDO, WITH AN EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH WHICHEVER COMPANY DESIDES TO PUT THE MONEY FORWARD! GREAT NEWS, DONT YOU THINK?!
Never owned a Dreamcast but I definitely played one and loved it. Never heard of Shenmue bebfore discovering your channel and the AGG podcast. Now I really need to get a Dreamcast AND the Shenmue games!
btw shenmue was a succes atleast it almost everyone bought it that had the dreamcast the problem was for them to be profitable they needed to sell the game 2 times per dreamcast owner to be profitable
@boulderdash112 In the Xbox version its English only. However the Dreamcast version of 2 is only Japanese. As for 1, I'm not sure on that. I THINK its both languages, but don't quote me on that.
I don't think there has been anything like it since. Game designers don't care about attention to detail anymore

LOL

When I first played Shenmue I thought it was boring but i played more and LOVED it
alexfart67 2 months ago
Great video. Good memories and great times. I just wanted to point out, that technically, Shenmue did not bomb; it sold very well. Over 1.2 million copies. The problem was, the first game alone cost $47 million to make ($64 million in 2011 dollars), which basically means that everyone who bought a Dreamcast would have had to buy Shenmue for the game to break even. Meaning there are over a million of us out here pining to get our hands on the rest of the Shenmue saga.

How can I play Shenmue Today?
I don't have a dreamcast.
coolbuddydude1 5 months ago
@coolbuddydude1 Sorry to say but in this day and age, most will use emulators, however it wont give the true feeling, I strongly suggest to find a Dreamcast for cheap, and get Shenmue 1 from eBay or Amazon. Shenmue 2 is hard to get on dreamcast since its only for European or Asian dreamcast consoles, there is Shenmue 2 on the original Xbox which can be got for extremely cheap, the voice acting of the Xbox version is pretty awful though
carnagex64 4 months ago
@coolbuddydude1 well umm you could buy shenmue 2 on the original xbox and you could play it on a 360.

ah it's all so sad...
and i wish there was at least an emulator out there that could save dreamcast states because i've always wondered how QTE scenes would play out if i would manage to beat them all.
though i suppose it might not be a good idea to revisit shenmue 1 & 2 because i remember how shitty it felt when it was announced there isn't going to be an ending to the series... still does -_-
i also didn't know shenmue 2 dc was available pal only. oblivious european that i am ;)

that kid "wanna play with me" - that's a pretty bad insinuation :P
when i played that, i didn't have any thoughts along those lines... ryo is still pretty young after all and it's obviously a tiny neighborhood where everybody knows everybody... alright, it's weird the kid would call him "mister" then but still... :)
notthere83 5 months ago
there is no sadder tale in the whole of video games history than the death of the shenmue series. yu suzuki will do it, sega will do it for the right money. if there is a massive shenmue fan billionaaire out there they could make it happen tomorrow. they just dont want to lose that money..

I'll always remember my friend watching me play Shenmue for hours and telling me how lame it was. Eventually, I banned him from my house for a view days, played through the game without any distractions, and probably had the best video game experience I've ever had.

@SABRENOSE you can download and burn shenmue 2 for the dreamcast and it will work on an american dreamcast without a problem, that's what I did

cool vid, agree about people not understanding "open world" at THAT time, (and even now, for some).
But I'm a pc player (no disrespect). So when I hear '1999' I always think "System Shock II". Sadly, another 'cult' item.

my cousin lent me his DC and he had shenmue but i wasnt into it. i was spoiled by gta 3 so i was expecting a gta like game, so i stopped playing. today i played for 10 hours straight. im on disc 2 now i wonder what happens now. the voice acting is pretty bad though, but it is so hilarious.

I just want to say after watching this I played Shenmue for the first time and completed both games in about 5 days, they were terrific games. I found the final disc of Shenmue 2 a little dull and boring, but apart from that they were both great.
ninman58 6 months ago

Retrofinn 7 months ago
@Retrofinn I agree, I think they put too much fighting in the second game, and I would definitely have preferred Japanese voices for the first game too. I liked it so much I'm going to play it again, a real classic.

Wow, I hate to admit it but this video got me all misty eyed.
I remember that edition of the Official Dreamcast Magazine and grabbing it the day it came out. I remember when anyone would come over that video would go back on for another play.
It's a crime that this series can go without a finish, even if it was just a mockup movie like they did for the xbox version, which i watched in full even though i finished the first many times.

This probably wont happen but..... if it does and if it sales well...its probably our only hope for shenmue 3...
csailor11 7 months ago
I prefered the japanese dialogue with subtitles version of the game, the english dubbed version sometimes felt to me like it was spoiling the beauty of the game.
rubics02 7 months ago
@rubics02 I feel like the English in Shenmue 1 gave it a certain atmosphere. That, combined with the dull colours and calm, ambient music gave it an aura that made it special in a sense. That said, Shenmue 2 didn't contain any of the dull colours of ambient music that the first did, and so, to me, English wouldn't have fit. Basically what I'm saying is English works for Shenmue 1, but not 2.
alec1382 7 months ago
I loved the freedom that enabled me to control the character to go anywhere and interact with anyone. Sometimes, I would just let the character stand still and just enjoy the music and ever-changing weather. Although Shenmue 2 is my fav in terms of the no. of different environment that the player goes thru as story progresses.

ok ok. I played the first shenmue recently the first time and got quite confused while seeing this video.
First I was never able to enter into any private House, only into shops and bars and such. I always got told that the door was locked.
Second I never was inside of that Bar with the sailors playing pool.
How can I find these places? I don't wanna miss them.

EnigmaHood 8 months ago
@EnigmaHood
That's actually a pretty good idea! The fact alone that it's done by Rockstar would make a lot of people buy it. Furthermore Shenmue is similar in a way to what they stand for. But otherwise I doubt that Sega would sell it. And also I don't know wether Rockstar would continue the original story.

Shenmue actually replicates real life better than other open-world games, a quality that I've always found attractive in it. There's always so much to do, and it's not because of a bunch random side-missions and Video Game Cruelty Potential of that you always see in Rockstar games.

it's odd. it seems like in exchange for physics for falling over yourself and what not, the interaction aspect of games like this seems to have diminished. that being said mass effect is one of the better efforts but to see a world like this on current gen systems with a similar examination mechanic and little nuances like the capsule machines etc would be amazing.
