Does anyone know where I can view the full video ov this clip? Also, What genre ov music could this be classified as? Just regular instrumental Jazz? Progressive? Anyone know? Thanks. :)
@ImEverythingYouCrave I think on a high-pitched drum it's called a moose call, and on a low-pitched drum it is the lion's roar. try looking up moose call If you want to see it on drums other than bass and timpani.
@iamnjs prolly jojo, hes older, and gavin actually peaked as a drummer only 10 years ago, not to say one is better than the other but gavins def a late bloomer
@yuu7073 watch how he licks his finger before sliding it across the head. the saliva helps to create friction, causing the head to vibrate. he hits the head to prevent the friction from lagging. try it, it's easier than it looks :)
Jeez this guy's like a human metronome. Every single hit is spot on. Its amazing because he's not listening to a click track and at certain points there are segments in the backing track where there are only beeps or stabs as reference points.
Hmm, he used what's called a "lions roar" on his high tom, it is mainly used on a concert bass drum or timpano and produces a deep low "growl" or "roar" if you will and therefore gives it its name. I have not seen it used on a smaller drum, but it turned out to be interesting.
@nicmilan90 In fact, that is the Picante Hand Crash, and the OMNI was based on that (and still in production). It has a thinner edge than Omni and a faster decay... I particularly prefer OMNIs... =)
Dream Theater would be a huge waste of Jojo's time and talent. He's more than good enough, but he's got other interests. Plus he's a jazz drummer as far as technique goes, not a prog rock drummer.
It's possible at low tunings as well. It's similar to a tambourine roll. Your finger has to create those vibrations along the head while still pushing down on the head to create the pitch elevation.
I wish he uses Zildjians or Istanbuls, something of a more character. I watched him live literally from a couple of meters and here on youtube many times. I don't get why he is so fond of them. But it's the master's taste, so i keep watching. :D
I love watching those drummers that are aware of how to get that much sound out of their instrument with the least amount of physical exzertion. Players such as Jojo Mayer and Mike Mangini continue to evolve the instrument and thus help evolve the perception that there is a little more to this instrument than just picking up sticks and hitting a surface.
The technique used at 1:59 is called a "moose call." Search and you should find some good videos on how it's accomplished. There's some other video with Jojo where he's in a smaller venue and he uses the same technique.
1:59 he uses the end of the brush, which is rounded and the end in order to get that sound. If you watch closely you can see him kinda push that in there but he is using his hand to cover it. HE is a mentor of perfection. A man of one talent on many scales of wonder. He is the epitome of BAMF.
@NorwegianCheesecake i'm not sure how to respond to this... i can't thumbs down cuz it might be a joke but i can't thumbs up because it might be completely serious... i shall respond, therefore, with a confused face and, "WHAT?! Where are you coming from with that statement?!"
Also, I don't care really what kind of cymbals he uses. I think we can ALL agree on that the cymbals in this video sounds GREAT in this context atleast.
I'm more interested in the snare. What snare is it?
I play Meinl Byzance and Zildjian K Custom cymbals and let me tell you, that the difference between Zildjian and Meinl is as big as between Meinl and Sabian. In my opinion...
@oskarveliky what are you, 9 years old? all the top manufacturers make amazing sounding cymbals. don't be such a close minded fan boy. unless you're being paid to play one brand, such ignorant brand loyalty is senseless. i wouldn't be surprised if the only cymbals you've ever played are ZBTs.
