Ok, how it works is a bug bites you. When it bites you the germs ON your skin are pushed INTO your skin. That is what causes infection from bug bites. Not all are from spiders, any bug that bites does this. Also when people scratch their bites and have dirty fingernails causes this too.

Those initial shots in the head, you know the shots in which his face was scrunched up in pain? That was probably them shooting him up with some sort of numbing medication. Kinda like novacaine at the dentist. Once taht took affect I imagine he couldn't feel anything which explains why he looks like he's in pain when they're giving him the first shots but not in pain when they're digging around in his head.
