  • @Nayelle1290 that's sort of rude, how many Nigerians do you know anyways? And i'm not really Nigerian i'm Cuban, I just take pride in my heritage. You think i pulled the facts out of my ass? Did you even read the message i sent you? By the way no slaves from the Yoruba tribe came to the U.S.

  • @Nayelle1290 Not at all. Most of the Senegambians came to the U.s. and they were only 5% of the whole slave trade. The majority of slaves in PR came from the Yoruba & Igbo tribe. And in Cuba & Brazil the slaves were from Angola/Congo (Bantu), Benin & Nigeria (Yoruba).

  • But yet people say they are not of african descent, one of the reasons for this is what the spanish did to them ,the same in DR,,if you gave up your african way of life, excepted their religion, dress code,, etc. etc. ..your classification would be changed to caucasian/or white no matter your skin dark or light..In other words your treatment was not as hash,so to keep from being raped, beaten or killed every day ,simple deny their africaness...

  • MUCHOS EN LOIZA SON DE LOS YORUBAS,,,ME SIENTO TAN ORGULLOSO,,,QUE PENA QUE MUCHOS SE AN OLVIDADO DE NUESTRA TRADISION TAN PODEROSA EN TODOS LOS ASPECTOS,,POR MENOS QUE MUCHOS NO LO ACEPTEN, SIEMPRE LO LLEVARAN EN LA SANGRE,,,YO LO LLEVARE CON MUCHO ORGULLO,,,QUE LA FUERSA DE DIOS NOS ACOMPAÑE..ASE

  • FYI In the 17th century africans were brought as slaves to puertorico to work the gold mines .This is where Bomba / Plena came into play and mixed in with the natives already on the island. Taino Indians.I am spanish I understand what she is singing it is very similar . Yes This is the roots of bomba @ 1:40 you hear that rythm you hear now in salsa especialy the rythm of the trumpets and congas we still use congas till this day in our salsa . It adds the flavor :) Love it. Our history is magnif.

  • I am in African American from the most black State in the USA, Mississippi. This is so amazing!!

  • @mrbilingual I'm glad you find it amazing because we're all one no matter where we are in the world. Yes, we're wonderful people gifted with rich artistic expression, beauty, physique, and most importantly, spirituality; we've just been completely blinded... Soon all the poverty, rejection, humiliation, and criminalization imposed on us will cease because we're the descendants of Yahweh's chosen people, we're just paying. All the blinders will be removed and we will truly sing HalleluYah.

  • @actionsrlouder Amein.. Baruch Hashem YAHUWEH

  • i lovve my puerto rico...

  • AFRO BORICUA,OTRA RAMA DE LA MUSICA SALSA.

  • Cant we just rejoice in our heritage? No need for bickering. Boricua!!

  • Que brutal

  • Yup we share the same blood, Puerto Ricans are proud of our racial mixture, thanks for posting.

  • I love this...My grandmother was a spaniard puertorican..light skin and such.. my grandfather was an afro rican.. and she was disowned... common story..but the children they produced... A - Mazing.... I LOVE PUERTO RICO.!!!!

  • 3:00 she is on point dancing with those drums

  • This is puerto rico.... I can tell by the vegiante in the parade. (most likely Loiza) puerto rico is extremely diverse ...their is bomba, plena, salsa all different flavors.. some from spanish european influence some from african and taino influence all different shades and colors of people.....is beautiful mi gente!

  • viva loiza!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow!

  • At Colombia there are drums and singers like those at Pacific and Atlantic zone, is very important to know about this cultural richness therefore if you are black or white because that multiculturality is our greatness richness as latinamericans

  • @armandoquenques and also the contributions made by the native ppls of our countries as well!

  • @armandoquenques Multiculturalism with white supremacy does not equal greatness.

  • @actionsrlouder Can u explain it? i dont understand ur comment, im not an english speaker, thanks.

  • some things just dont need to be seen at from a valueing point of view nor do they need to be compared or put in competition to other things...

    coexist or fuse or evaluate

the past will never ever return

  • u forget the past, therefore u will never be remembered in the future!, we live in a time in which all we learn about is european history, they don't teach us afrian history, puerto rican history, etc. these videos are good for the future, it has nothing to do with reliving the past, it is about honoring our past

  • wow!! pure yoruba drumming!! there is nothing remotely european spanish about these drums and if you cant tell the difference or you are in denial go get some counselling ~!!~

  • @oluwalogbon58

The drumming comes from Kongo x_x

  • @Quiteness where do you get that from ? lol!!! denial is not just a river in Egypt.. where is the "kongo" on your map of the world ??? lol!!!

  • @oluwalogbon58

The Kingdom of Kongo? The pre-colonial state that covered much of what is modern Congo and D.R.C, one of the largest slave trading empire in Central Africa, which fell to colonialism due to problems with succession and greed and betrayal on behalf of Pedro IV who sold out to the Portuguese.

  • trying to claim this is congolese drumming is nothing more than claim jumping the truth is.this is pure unadulterated YORUBA DRUMMING ... so the DRC slave empires or not, doesnt matter this BELONGS TO US.. haters can hate all they like they cant imitate.. so is our language "KONGOLESE TOO"? .. NEXT.

  • @oluwalogbon58 you need to study the history of fusion in the western hemishpere

  • @Quiteness no the drumming comes from the Yoruba tribe of benin and nigeria. Congo always had close ties with Nigeria hence the similar cultures.

  • every one is bugged over this vid, its african style dance but most people are dumb "KNOW YO HISTORY"and say its only spanish, made up by white people or hispanics in PR. and dont get defensive when people sall PRs white because thats what some are, some could be black. and tj some hispancs ae racist too so..... but i see yo point

  • If it was not for them coming to the Island I would not be born, but sorry I have to say it F**k spain, and Praise all the Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico on the main Island and from the states USA . We are a strong people and proud People. I hope that indivual Fmarco27 leaves the kkk or neo Nazis group and wake up grasp the true History of Puerto Rico. Hey Fmarco27 give us a hail hitler for good old times.

  • Now for the person acting like a great USA KKK and his name is Fmarco27, you don't know what the F**K your talking about you F**king skinhead. Who made you the speaker for all the Puerto Ricans in the world?? you go and learn your sh*T. come on say it once for all of us to see it, say it go hail hitler lol. In my family we have all types of color skin we have from very dark to very light. and the only thing I would ever associate myself to spain is the fact they were on the Island 500 yr ago.

  • was born in Bayamon Puerto rico in june 6 1979 I love my peoples all from the darkest to the lightest, we are a proud people and strong. My wife is white and she always tells me she has never seen such proud people in her life, and the unity of families thru good and bad times. I really don't see much of her family side and it's not becuase I don't want to because I do, it's that's the way they do things. But when it comes to my side of the family it's like a puerto rican day parade.

  • that sounds cute, now go hug a tree and pick some flowers

  • i love it...

  • this is so cool!!! beautiful :)

  • i hate other cultures an races, who take from the african traditions and culture, try to make it their own,but hate to say they black.all so called latin country, steel from the african try to make it their own an deny its african.spaniard do have no rythem like this.

  • @1msbracey Dude, they are not stealing. Puerto Ricans have african roots, so is it stealing when it's in their blood? And the reason people deny their heritage is because of the way our society's mentality was manifactured to do. People are raised to deny, up to the point when it becomes wired into their brain. It's not their fault. Atleast many are trying now to go back into their african roots, ever since the 70s.

  • @lostchild06 we been trying to go back much longer than that Research Arturo Schomburg

  • @disk0ne I know who he is, I mean as a society in general

  • @lostchild06 what da fuck you talkin about

  • @1msbracey Maybe you should go read the comments and put two and two together

  • It is so BEAUTIFUL to SEE the AFRICAN INFLUENCE in this VIDEO. I am PROUD of all the ISLANDS/NATIONS/COUNTRIES in the AMERICAS that CONTINUE to PRESERVE their AFRICAN TRADITIONS.

  • Both my Parents were born in Puerto Rico. my Grandma on my moms side is just as black as the peeps in this vid. My Grandma on my fathers side is very white lookin, she can pass for polish. Im somewere in the middle. Black wavy hair, light skin, big nose, big lips, green eyes. What do you call me?

  • What does one call you? Puerto Rican.

  • Puerto-Rican :)

My grandfather is the product of an African/Taino mother and a Spanish (possibly mixed, we don't know) father. He always referred to himself as Puerto-Rican (which in his eyes is a mixed culture already). As other Hispanics, he hates being called anything else but it.

  • Same here! My dad was very dark skin, afro hair, my mom very light skin, straight hair, hazel eyes! Welcome to Puerto Rico! I just hate my "compatriotas" that say that they are white and do not like black puertorricans! My maternal grandmother is like that, she never liked my dad nor his family, I am 33 years old, I haven't spoken to her since I was 17 because of her sh**! And I do not regret it! I love my heritage!

  • Dios bendiga nuestra musica.

  • u go to the island people range from very white, blonde hair green eyes like ednita nazario...to nigerian like luigi texidor and don rafael cepeda...puerto ricans are mixed people...mainly european and african...and some mestizo due to the rape of early taino women by spanish settler's

  • tru

  • It wasn't always rape. Anthropologically speaking it makes a lot of sense for women who live on islands to seek out the seed of traveling/invading/visiting non-islanders. There is evidence all over the world, e.g. Tahitian women's renowned promiscuity.

  • thank you.

i'm crying as i watch this.

    this reminds of my grandmother.

    these are my people.

thank you with all my heart!

    Peace and love, always!

  • asi se dice cono.......

  • That's what i'm talking about!

  • Because, perhaps English is a part of the Neo-modern Puertorican identity. Maybe also seeing as this is an English language website, people are compelled to write in English. Or Maybe they just plum don't know Spanish. Does that make anyone less Puerto Rican? Less in touch with their roots?

  • disz iz ill

  • and by the way as Puerto ricans we like to show pride in the three roots dat make up a puerto rican ,TAINO,AFRICAN,AND SPANIARD, we dont try to leave out any of dese ...

  • what about the freanch the irish or germans see this is how i know that trinity of races is bullshit well not bullshit but any easy way to keep away from the race issue.

  • [[correction]] i mention these 3 MAIN roots cuz there the stongest ones that make up a typical puerto rican ..there are ricans who have other ancestry in them but NOT all do..

  • its cool its just some people try to act like that trinity definition is equally distributed throughout the island when in fact some people are as pure black as a African from GHANA or as pure white as a GERMAN giving the fact that Spanish would be their native tongue because of Spain being the colonizer not everyone has prodomintly spanish blood.

  • yay for GHANA!!! Fanti tribe forever!!!

  • Comment removed

  • que vivan mis raices AFRICANAS CONYO!!!!!

  • Puerto ricans love to swing thier round hips to the african beat of salsa, love to drop their "s" when speaking, love to eat pasteles, but at the same time love to deny Africa....is salsa more like bomba or flamenco? are our bodies roudnly shaped more like a spaniard or a african? Africanized music, africanized speech, africanized food, africanized religion (santeria) but a europeanized mentality. we are all entitiled to our opinions, but dont be a hipocrit. Dont partake in the african influence

  • idk were u gettin all this form but from WHAT I KNOW AS A PUERTO RICAN us boricuas DONT deny our african roots ..its something we honor and are proud of and take siriusly,..maybe in the states you see some ricans denying there african roots but if you go to the island the african influence is STRONG n u c it all over from da food, to the music,to the language,to the Peoples etc...

  • Hardly any of the Puerto-Ricans I met and grew up around ever denied their hertiage. I only met one PR family that did and they just didn't like Black Americans. Oh, please don't give into that stereotype that Roundly shaped bodies are an African trait. It could be as much as a Spanish trait. My mixed PR Grandfather was extremely skinny and small. My german-american grandmother had more of a "Round" body then he and his PR family. lol Don't believe the hype.

  • @SpiritualxInitiate I'm trying to understand this europeanized mentality you speak of. You mean the same europeanized mentality very much exists in the African American community too. Light skin vs dark skin, Need I go in to contacts & hair weaves & perm relaxers.. Yes they're Ricans who deny their black ancestry as their are black amercians who do too. We can look at them both and see their foolishness to believe otherwise.

  • THIS IS SOO HOTT.. Looks like if it almost went back 2 da 1st 1's doin it or da 1's dat made it up..

  • the first vignette certainly looks authentically old, maybe to the 50's? But i was under the impression that Bomba goes back hundreds of years, before camera technology.

  • Man there really are some dumb people out here. Its so sad and so scary. ..."Pure Black." What type of comment is that? Who is really pure anything??? ...And another thing. Until people stop telling themselves they are better than others because of race or nationality... we will ALL ALWAYS be Slaves.

  • Coño men, esto ya casi no se ve en la isla....que pena.

  • Viva Puerto Rico Libre!!!!!!!!!! TAINOS!!

  • In Ecuador also there are african ecuadorians who play BOMBA songs , they live in a region called Valle del Chota , they escaped from slavery from the low lands and are living there since 17 century , so , I think their BOMBA is really goob prove of african ancestry .

Check BOMBA Valle del chota .

    They are pure blacks .

  • no such thing as a superior race! shyt is socially constructed anyway. to divide us and to make one group feel like they are superior than another because of whatever purpose. and all of that was done out of fear! accept that we have mixture and stop denying the facts puerto rico have as much african blood as it have european and indigenous blood running through its veins.

  • whats a real puerto rican? is that someone who looks more white or more black? are u serious. There were several different cultures that had an impact on Puerto Rico, Spanish, African, and Indigenous, they all contributed something great to make the culture what it is. I am not a puerto rican, but my husband and his family is, there are some who are very light and some who are very dark. So what is the big deal, to deny the cultures is to deny Puerto Rico.

  • I am a Puerto Rican who was born in PR and it saddens me that we have to post garabage like this on who is more puerto rican than the next guy. I believe that we are a mix of all the people that came to PR. I myself identify with all the people, that makes us as Puerto Ricans unique. Just because your skin is white does'nt mean that your soul is African or Taino.

  • did you know that whites were part neanderthal? barbaric savage raptist and murders by nature?

  • Best we remember where we came from so we know who we really are. Thanks for posting. Too bad about the racist comments and some people's claim to WHITE/CASTILIAN superiority.

  • Que viva Puerto Rico, que viva Africa nuestra verdadera madre, la madre de la unica raza, la humana....Africa, the mother of humanity, the place where the journey started. we all (humanity)have African ancestors...peace

  • hahaha!...

España is and has always been the the only motherland of Puerto Rico...educate yourself, read...

  • historyson: just a question: why THE caribbean is the dreams fantasy of the european an amèrican people WHy? so single is the confluence between of all musicians rithms.gracias, mercy, thanks.

  • Get of my dick bitch you see the video pussy BlACK PRIDE ALL THROUGH YA FUCKING COUNTRY AND I BET YOUR WHITE ASS DANCE TO SALSA AND REGGAETON WHICH ARE BOTH AFRICAN BORN MUSIC AND I KNOW YOU EAT PLATANOS ARROZ CON CONGULLAS AND PATELAS. DICK LICKAS LIKE YOU CAN KEEP SWINGING FROM SPAINS NUTS AND PEOPLE LIKE ME GONE REP THAT RED GOLD AND GREEN FAGGOT!!!!

  • mayor, proyect listen you hick none english speaking fuck face name one MAJOR contribution spain left in PR and I bet your stupid ass it has African influence. mayor (LOL!) Bomba is a form of black pride it shows the pride in the the descedents of the Africans Im loving every minute of it HA HA!

  • Damn man you are a racist thats crazy. Why do you have all this hate for kid? Its one thing to claim PR is majority white but its another thing to use racist terms to identify those who you dont agree with. There is something deeper going on with you b. This is more than just typing random racist rhetoric. Get fixed immediately. We live in a global community where your type of thinking will no longer be tolerated. CF

  • Whatever, go back and read the way you, and those others, trying to impose themselves and making opinions about Puerto Rican culture without knowing it, without even living here; Those are bigger offenses to me, a real Puerto Rican. If you think you can impose yourself and insult others just because you are/were a suppressed/identity problems and want everybody to feel bad for you, you have something coming and definetively not from me.

  • If your offended by an idea someone posted ok you are entitled to your belief system but why call your fellow country men, monkeys? Why tell another human being "go back to monkey land or your motherland"? You need to reevaluate yourself and actions because you very well maybe a closet racist.

  • This is exactly why videos like the one above were posted. To show an element of Puerto Rican culture that has been put on the backburner of society due to unjust attitudes like the one you express with in your comments.

  • Even you a so called "real Puerto Rican" (if there is such a term)should know that the cultural identity of "your people" (notice how I took myself out of the equation) is Spaniard, Taino and African. Than why not represent all these elements and not just one. I am not saying Puerto Rico is majority black or mulatto. No my argument is there is a significant African influence and heritage on the island and its people.

  • In Puerto Rico, we differentiate between identity crisis people that left the Island in the 50's, 60's etc to live in the US, and have never come back nor have an idea of PR history...like probably your relatives...and the Puerto Rican that presently lives in the Island, educated on its history, and refuse to be denoted by ignorants; we KNOW for a fact your statements are prejudiced, racial based, imploring for el Aybendito...

  • You say "we" as if you are a representative of all the Puerto Rican people when in fact you are not. Just like I am not an ambassodor of the Nuyorican people.

  • whatever - The obvious difference is that i LIVE in Puerto Rico and you don't - you have no Idea of what Puerto Rico is and our truly culture.

  • What an idiot... The obvious point is that I LIVE IN PUERTO RICO AND YOU DO NOT. Your comments are nonsense...

  • What if some one was to post a video documentary that demonstrated the beautiful cultures of the Spaniard, the Taino and the African in equal value? What would you say? What if this video also included deep commentary on the intermingling of these three groups and how this blending culminated into the creation of a unique people, would you take offense to that?

  • YEa yeah...that WAS NOT the case, go back and READ you initial statements. Like I said before, RESPECT others if you want to be respected. Don't go posting opinions as facts when you don't even have knowledge/basis for your statements.

  • You put a lot of effort into a post that is not an answer relevant to the question I asked. Now lets focus here and answer the question.

  • Ignorant: GO BACK AND READ all the postings related to this and you will see the answer is obvious: you ask "what if this video included deep commentary ...bla,bla...? the reality is that THIS VIDEO IS WHAT IT IS AND YOUR IGNORANT COMMENTS UNLEASHED ALL OF THIS; THIS IS THE RESULT OF IGNORANCE - YOURS as of many other people making judgement without KNOWING WHAT PUERTO RICAN CULTURE TRULY IS...

  • I am not racist I respect CIVILIZED people that know how to express themselves intelligently

  • Hey bitch! We are not Spanish! So why would we want to speak your daam language?

  • we?...who is we?..the african living in the US?..OF COURSE you don't speak SPANISH, there IS the point. Stop talking shit then, because WE Puerto Rican speak SPANISH; you have no idea of our culture and keep posting offensive crap...and like I posted before, if you want to be respected, be civilized and know how to express with intelligence.

  • Even the spanish spoken in Puerto Rico is far from Castillian you cant even deny that. The spanish language spoken in PR has phrases and words from the Taino that were almost decimated and the West Africans brought to the Island as slaves. Taino: Huracan, Hamaca, Bohio, Batey, Yuca. African: Bochinche, Gandinga, Mofongo, Modongo, and Fulano. Oh cant forget the influence from the Canary Islands to.

  • You reality may be a bit off unfortunately. Since you are in Spain do you speak castilian spanish or Puerto Rican. If you speak Puerto Rican than I wish I was there because you will be made fun of almost immediately. lol You know damn well Caribbean spanish is far from sounding Castillian. The spaniards laugh at the way PR, Dominicans and Cubans speak spanish. Ans no not every average Puerto Rican from the island travels to spain just a few like you.

  • You fucking retard you know damn well I meant Puerto Rican spanish fuck face. Remember this line dick head "The spaniards laugh at the way PR, Dominicans and Cubans speak spanish". Such a fucking dumb ass I could tell you suffer from ESL (english as a second language). hahahahaha

  • When was the last time you talked to a Spaniard? When was the last time you have talked to a PRican?Have you ever travel?THERE IS THE POINT. I certainly do not care but I can tell you are a complete ignorant who just don't have anything else to do.

  • Wow what a great response well here we go if you need to know my educational back ground I went to college at St. Peter university and NJCU. I also took up a trade as a network techncian at Chubb institute. So not only do I have a college degree but a certificate as a network technician. I currently work for a communications company as a network analyst. Wow I'm so ignorant.lmfao!!!!

  • When was the last time you talked to a Spaniard? When was the last time you have talked to a PRican?Have you ever travel?THERE IS THE POINT. I certainly do not care but I can tell you are a complete ignorant who just don't have anything else to do.

  • oooooh...I understand now since you were graduated from a non credited institution/ with less than 2.0/ Try Master degree MBA(Masters Business Administration) from UFL (Florida) and 2 colleg degrees (Business and Biological Sciences) from UAL (Almenia,España). Network analyst.. I uderstand now, try Executive manager for Watson labs....I understand now your attitude, I wont continue wasting my time with scum like you...

  • Stay in your projects, people like you that talks about other without knowing, "se quedan siempre en la mierda para siempre". You probably met someone from the ghetto areas in PR and think everybody is like them; or probably you are product of one of those identity crisis scum that just give PR a bad image...

  • If you must know my geograpic location here it goes I currently live in downtown Jersey City aproximately 5 minutes outside of downtown Manhattan. The area i live in is referred to as Wall Street West. There are a large amount of young urban professionals out here due to the 9-11 terrorist attacks so property value is twice as high than average. I dont know if you know this but property taxes have gone up 30% in NJ since 9-11. Believe me this is far from a slum.

  • That being said I do know people in the inner urban areas "the hood" and yes I can whip your ass. I get respect from the corporate world as well as the street.

  • My aunt lives in a suburb in Bayamon where there are a rich array of people in her neighbor ranging from white to black. All good people. My aunt is not from a project on the island. She owns her home because her and her husband worked hard. My grand parents who live in barrio Obrero Arecibo are not from the hood either. So you are sadly mistaken if you think that I am surrounded by uneducated or lower class types.

  • Try leaning one language at a time. Your English is smeared with your Spanish. I read all your moaning and it comes down to this: "la sartén diciéndole NEGRA a la olla". If you want to be a real wizard, go read some anthropology. As far as our linguistic heritage, you are to far gone up your ass to understand. READ A BOOK, A GOOD BOOK.

  • Let me just introduce some facts to you:In the 15th century, Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas and brought the Castilian Spanish language with him. As a result of what scholars refer to as "hispanización", Spanish was established a primary language in the region.

  • You a definate bitch sending me some corny comment about you being a real puerto rican. B if I ever see I'll beat the shit out. I'll make sure your mouth wont ever work. And your not the only one who lived in Europe retard I lived in Holland for two months and was a frequent visitor of Belgium and Germany. My great grand father is German if you want to know that to. You corn ball.
