Obvious Asai kata. He was a visionary yet an eccentric. This kata is filled with unlikely techniques. As I understand he was concerned with the lack of dexterity he saw. Well, dexterity is one thing and teaching a martial art is another. The JKA and the vast majority of it's students have lost a martial focus and concentrate now on sports and theatrics. Defense requires knowledge of reliable techniques and tactics. Tournaments and theatrics do not produce that.
@IEKUKATAKA I am a 2 KYU in shotokan karate, and while i agree with most that you said, i have to dissagree on one point, Tournaments can provide a useable source of knowledge for defense, I have seen for myself to many times fellow karateka that had practiced longer than I have (some were already sho-dan) and hadn't had a single taste of combat, as soon as they got into a fight, they were destroyed, with tournaments, you can get a feel for an actual fight, which i found out myself.
@Pivotdiddyx I would never deny that tournaments are helpful for some. That is not the intent in martial arts, the intent is benefit for all that practice. Remember, I taught this junk for over 20 years and it is abundantly clear to me that the tournament successful are the better athlete and are so in a controlled environment of deluded techniquues. The far better preparation is a total combat focus and study and in the absence of anything that corrupts it. Okinawan karate is just that way.
@IEKUKATAKA 20 years? In which case I will bow to that level of knowledge, I'm not stupid enough to argue with a sensei, I had assumed that you were closer to 1 KYU, However as a parting comment, for I have no intention of getting into a long debate, I would like to quote my sensei in "Kihon Karate and Kata have great importance, and can be applied to self-defense, however, if you are jumped in an alleyway, and must fight, you won't have the time, nor the focus to execute perfect technique."
I truly admire Asai Sensei. He created a few katas and I like many of them specially the ones with circular movements because in shotokan we practice a lot of linear movements. But others I don´t get it, like this one. I lot of movements without sense... looks horrible!, like the ones invented in open tournaments.
Hmm interesting. Reminds me of more shito katas I've seen with a few more zenkutsu dachis added in. What is the lineage of this kata out of curiousity?
@toru315 this is not a shotokan kata it was created by someone after the death of Gichin Funakoshi and his son and is not considered cannon teaching material for shotokan by the JKA or the WKF
Osu. This is Scott Langley sensei of JKS. Very skilled and brilliant karateka. Thank you for sharing!

To all of You!
This Kata and many other that aren't Shotokan as you think were created by late Asai Sensei and are practiced in JKS.

This Kata is praticated only in JKA? In SKIF this Kata isn't recognized like a "real" kata or both styles adopt that form?
I liked it. The moves seems inferior than the original Shotokan Katas, but I liked! Pretty ^^

Nice form...look pretty fluid. Although, he needs more spirit; he makes it look routine...bad.
