  • To compare young hot shots to Philip is just weird. I mean any young punk can become a technical wizard but to compose like this and play it? Come on......There are little to none of this caliber in the guitar world. Angus or Yngwie? I'll take Angus.

  • More important than technique is the music... There are a lot of very good guitarists, with awesome technique, but only with a good sense of phrasing like Philip has, you can conect with audience! He has that "something else" in his playing, and no one should value him less than he is: a special musician.

  • Such a beautiful player I want to hear more. PHILLIP

I can film more for you. Love as always

    Bb

  • I agree with the "out of shape" comment from CarlosMacMartin. Years ago, I was lucky enough to see some of Phillip concerts in Berkeley, CA. His performances were really good. Also, it is true that he had an incredible huge repertoire that included the classics and other types of music as well. I particularly remember his renditions of Peruvian Andean music.

  • Yeah,I feel lucky to have been able to learn

the "correct technique" from him too! The guy

is a treasure chest of information regarding

the classical guitar & classical music. He did

teach many people who are players & teachers

here in the SF Bay Area. Some who are teaching

today at the SF Conservatory of Music. There's

plenty of players out there but not many who

have the experience & knowledge of Philip.A

    True Maestro!

  • More Barrios influence

  • He was "out of shape" when Tim recorded this

    performance.This guy knows more repertoire

than most would hope to memorize in their

entire playing career. He used to be able to play uninterupted & never repeat himself for

hours! You don't believe me,ask Luthier John

    Gilbert.

  • well, maybe not a great player, but I agree that his compositions are enjoyable.

  • See Ben Bolt's webpage and see what he says

    about Philip.

  • You must have your hearing checked; Philip is one of the greatest players in the world; you don't win the Segovia Competition (1972) by playing at your level.

  • with no disrespect to mr. rosheger, there are many, many, many guitarists with infinitely superior technique who can play circles around him. Even student guitarists. Also, playing has changed a lot in the last 35 years. Go listen to David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, John Williams, Ana Vidovic, Marcin Dylla, Lukasz Kuropaczewski, Meng Su, Fabio Zanon, Pepe Romero, Angel Romero, etc. etc. etc. Rosheger is a talented composer, but he's not a great guitarist, my friend.

  • Play circles around him?

HA, Are you on drugs? Again; how in the world did he ever win a world class Competition? I was listening to several of the people you mention well before you were even born so let's keep it real. You say "student guitarists" can play better...I guess you must mean yourself?

I've known Philip for 30 years and you could only hope to be as good. Dream on.

And really; the phrase "play circles around" someone is so juvenile.

  • wow buddy. i wasn't referring to myself, no. But i have students who can play more cleanly, faster, with more tonal variation, with better tone, and with more controlled dynamics than he ever could. As I was saying, the level of competitions has changed a lot. go to the gfa some time. or learn some technique yourself.

  • example- 10+ buzzes in the first 15 seconds. learn some technique, perhaps get your own hearing checked. don't patronize me without being correct.

and no, i wasn't referring to myself.

  • As a composer myself; as I play my own pieces I improvise on them and sometime stumble...a few buzzes? Big Deal; you think you can judge him from ONE little video under who knows what conditions. Well, it's what I'd expect from a know it all 23 year old.

So I guess your students are better than yourself because you sure are just an average player. And you think the level of playing is now so much greater than Segovia, Williams, Bream, Parkening, Presti and Lagoya? Right.

  • i suppose the difference between you and me is that i have no illusions of grandeur. Have a nice life.

  • I'd love to see you go up to David Russell or James Kline after one of their Concerts and try and sell your opinion of Philip's "bad" playing. They'd laugh in your face.

So, I suppose we should all take YOUR word and not the praise Segovia had for Philip? I guess they awarded Philip the prize for his playing which is not even as good as your student (according to you)?

No Illusions? Philip won the Segovia Competition when he was your age.

  • technique alone does not make an artist.

Phillip connects to the audience in a deep way wth his music.

  • Not only a great player but a great composer of guitar music.

  • amazing skills!!! 5 stars

  • beautiful !
