  • OK... For everyone with Windows 7... go to your little speaker icon in your task bar, right click, go to recording devices, if Stereo Mix does not show up in your options, right click in that empty area, make sure both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" options are checked. Stereo Mix should appear, then right click on Stereo Mix, and select Enable. You should be up and going then.

  • What version of Windows are you using? I can't do it on Windows 7.

  • Thanks so much!!!! You just gave me a big hint and it helped A LOT. I wanted a clean recording and recording from mic was a no-no. Works with Windows 7, just go to Control Panel>Sound>Recording and enable and make "Stereo Mix" as default. Yay!

  • it doesnt work for latitude laptop only records ecternal sounds not internal

  • NO NO N O NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Stereo mix doesn't even come up for me. What do you do if that happens?

  • Proffesionaly put together, great Narration. You sir, have earned yourself a Golden Star of Pute Ownage and Slight Massive Distruction. (I don't get how it can be slight yet massive at the same time either.)

  • can you do this on a mac?????????

  • @FengasmicProductions Yea there are some videos on youtube.

  • @Judirox Where?

  • What if you have windows 7???

  • I want to record INTERNAL sound + MIC sound on audacity. I haven't figured it out yet..

  • I love you man. I've been wanting to record an internal audio track of something that would drone me to sleep.

Just for the lols, I'll tell you - it's the droning, starship engine sound with faint and soft intermittent beeps and buzzes from Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. Dead silence keeps me awake - my inattentive mind is always finding something to do - and sleep doesn't count as an activity; that sound seems to do just that without taxing me or waking me up.

    So happy :D

  • how didu change the flag on the start button

  • plz someone tell me how to do this in windows 7?

  • Thank you very much! ,this has been bugging me all day and now its fixed yay

  • when i have the volume thing open i only have line in and mic. and i cant choose any other mixer device because there's only one available... any suggestions?

  • thanks

  • ok i was able to record sounds before but now if i select stereo mix in audacity it doesn't record anything. then if i record mic volume it records the computer sounds (very crapily) but also my voice. how do i get it to just record the computer sounds? someone please comment back

  • I can do all that, however, I use a laptop and it has an internal sound card/recording device so when I record videos such as this one, it picks up all the excess stuff too. How can I record only what comes off of the computer? I tried selecting "Line In", "External Mic" and "Internal Mic". Internal Mic is the only one that records but it picks up the excess crap. Any help?

  • Does anyone know where you can find stereo mix in later windows systems? I have Windows 7, and I have no clue whatsoever. Any help would be appreciated, just send a msg to phan601. Thank you!

  • NOOB ALERT NOOB ALERT!!!

  • how did you get this theme

  • great video! thank you so much. (:

  • This is a lot easier than taking all these steps. All you have to do is start Audacity, then click on "Edit" then at the bottom click on "Preferences" (or Ctrl P) and Under "Recording Device" select "Stereo Mix" ..... you don't need to bother with the windows sound settings at all.

  • Aahhh, old Youtube. I remember when it was like that. Good times.

  • @BruckThatsMe It used to be like that? Never noticed.

  • I have a mac and need to record MS sam saying something... any ideas?

hers a bit of a tut

    start>control panel>classic view>sound

    click on the recording tab

then click on your sound card

there be a drop down menu just change that to use this device.

    and your done!

  • windows 7 on my laptop only shows two microphones :/

  • People theres an easier way just use the narrate feature on Windows Movie Maker

set the the input to Stereo Mix and turn the level down to around 1 and a half

    press record.

  • I don't get it...... i think my computer is different, cuz mine is a Dell computer, I also don't have a microphone........ DX

  • I found another video on how to do this in Vista:

Go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Sound.

    Click on the Recording tab.

Right-click in a blank space in the Devices area and click Show Disabled Devices.

In my case, it shows up as Stereo Mix as appropriate, but in some cases it may show up as What-U-Hear. You may have to set this as your default and then reboot to get it to work.

After doing this, it got rid of all feedback and Audacity recorded like a charm.

  • Thank God for smart people like you.

  • @xaratherus ur so smart thank u so much

  • @xaratherus

great! It works for windows 7 too!

  • @Ne1s0n64 How? it wont let me change my sound properties to recording?

  • @mynameisdonaltube

I went to control panel > hardware and sound > then, under sound, go to "change system sounds" > then hit the "recording" tab > RIGHT CLICK in the section where you can see the current recording devices > from that menu, click "show disabled devices" > "Stereo mix" will show up as an option to choose from now. " > right click stereo mix and choose "enable". > then I just disabled the microphone.

    hope that helps :)
