So grateful to have quality footage from '72. The '72 sound from the Strat is one of my favorite Jerry tones. Too bad there isn't any footage of the second set.....I'm sure the cameras melted during the Dark Star sequence.
If anyone is willing to give me there personal address I can hook you up with this show. Straight from my Europe '72 box set. 100% Crispy soundboard just waiting to rocket you out to space. All burned on CD's and ready to fly.
Fuck, I saw the Dead several times during this period, with the Wall of Sound. The band was at its height then and with Wake of the Flood right afterward.
The grateful dead is awesome because they made the "start from scratch" style of jam band really cool. Phish and SCI are a lot more like the allman brothers because they o more of a Jazz solo section jam. Bands like Lotus carry on the "start from scratch" tradition. This is the type of open ended music that I love.
I agree with people who say they don't need drugs to enjoy the Dead; that is completely true. I firmly believe that anyone can listen to and enjoy the music of the Grateful Dead in almost any state of mind. That being said...a LOT of people get high and listen to the Dead. A lot. Including me. All the time.
@HOLLISTRANGULATION Hahahahahaha ya THIS is woodstock, yup Woodstock all the way right here, cause Woodstock isn't only on the side bar or anything and didn't take place in 1969 or anything, and Woodstock wasn't an OUTDOOR music festival or anything, yup classic woodstock right here
No need to be a cunt man, not everyone knows all about woodstock. Of course it's silly to think it could have been in '72. But be cool man, at least we're all listening to the dead
@frenchy7322 I can dig that their listening to the Dead, I'm all for that, but I mean seriously it says the date of the performance in the title, obviously this isn't Woodstock footage, regardless of what you say, it is a pretty dumb comment.
I agree, the drumming with just Billy is quite awesome. Tho there are moments with mickey that you never woulda gotten without him. Its a toss up, but 71-74 is definitely my favorite group of years. 72 is the true monster, IMO. but then again i dont listen to enough 74 or 73, but thats partly because it doesnt stand out.
Awesome China>rider! I never was crazy about the early China>riders, always felt the 80's had more power. I now see it as two awesome styles 71-74 80-90. LISTEN!!
Absolutely THE best version of this song........EVER! And look at Jerry's eyes unmuddled and lucid. This is the Jerry I want to remember. Thanks for the wonderful music,Jerry. And thanks for the post pheldd.

@baltusrolcaddie1@baltusrolcaddie1 Actually it is hippie drug music, thats what make it psychedelic, and thats why it's so wonderful, lsd and weed was legal back then, so why not
@xelosign Lmao, I'd like to know where you lived in 1972 where weed was legal. I mean, yes it was looked at far differently, but both of those things were definitely illegal. Its definitely not just hippie drug music, its a beautiful jam by pure souls giving it all they got.
@SoopaFish69 Lol i was talking about the sixties, because this song is from that age, mmm i didnt said that it wasnt beautiful, it is, sorry if i mispoke, lets just enjoy it....
My all time favorite of all GD songs, I love Bob's riff. This song just makes me want to get up and dance, and I hate dancing. What a treat it was to see them live, just once, in their hometown and my playground, beautiful San Francisco. Did Jerry have any clue how many people adored him? I hope so.
4:06 ... an amazing image of these guys. are you kidding me! from one who was there. (maybe not this one but many others). good vid. 5:29 doesn't su*k either. lol

This is great stuff. A lot of us were turned on to the Dead beyond the studio with europe 72. Miss it all very much. The boys were so great. I have yet to find anything that replaces the musical experience they offered.

Pigpen was the best. Such a great blues singer, such soul in his harmonica playing. RIP. As for Phish, they had many more influences than the Dead. To suggest that they wouldn't have started a band if the Dead didn't exist is just stupid. Dirty hippies may not have KOA'd across the country following them if the Dead didn't exist, but there's no way those guys wouldn't have banded up.
Tthis is IT!! Perfect example of why I harbour a soft spot for the Dead . All that nonsense the Stones spew about the so called "ancient art of weaving" a guitar sound, yeah right, Garcia & Weir always meshed so perfectly,& percise. They were often so insynch it's unworldly! Btw I've never tripped & tend to take a rather dim view of most US rock ,but when the Dead were on - they were just on - case closed! RIP Mr. G & the "other ones" who passed "furthe" too .This was truly a band .
Sorry theres just no comparison between the Dead and Phish. I saw phis live, not good. Theres was no soul, no groove. Allmans and Dead are way way....just way.
@tabber87. Obviously you're not a true fan, Jerry would feel sorry for you because you've become so arrogant and angry. Grateful Dead was a about music, love and fun. It was never a competition. Dead will always be the best. But Phish is still a great band.
@downhillkid59 Never meant it as a snub, friend. Loved them all -- Keith (RIP), Brent (RIP) and Bruce for some real specials shows. All of them added something unique and special.
@downhillkid59 Not that crazy about Pigpen....but without him, no platform for the Dead of the 70's with Keith and Donna....and it's funny, without Mickey in this one, I appreciate what Kreutzman is doing. Brent's singing added a raw tone to a lot of songs and when i started seeing the Dead in the early 90's I was fond of the Bruce piano/accordian. Vince had his moments to shine in the later 90's too....such a dynamic band with so many players over the years, all of them are The Grateful Dead.
You think these guys would be happy and take care of themselves and not drink and drug and smoke into the grave with all that steady work and money because I have seen many a struggle including day laborers just trying to make a buck a day if that, Garcia was only 53 Ron was only 27
I just love watching Jerry and Bob play guitar together. They just new perfectly how to play with each other. Bob compliments Jerry's riff so well here!
@Tarn1968 i wasn't old enough to see the Grateful Dead.. i was 5 when Jerry died. And all the magical things your describing. However i do recommend seeing DSO and Further, almost the same. Just close your eyes and BAM its the Dead. Oh yeah the atmosphere is the same to haha.
I think its safe to say were all a little gay for jerry

Sorry theres just no comparison between the Dead and Phish. I saw phis live, not good. Theres was no soul, no groove. Allmans and Dead are way way....just way.

The bass player looks like he could be Mike Mills' (bass player for REM) dad. Similar face and hair, and same nerdy glasses.

One of the wonderful things about Jerry, when he wasn't opiated, was the little smiles of surprise, like he was listening to his playing with you.
