I'm Personally Very Glad Companies Outsourced These Highly Overrated Jobs To The Indians, I Worked Helpdesk In The Past and Got Nothing But Back Pains, Learn Nothing In The Process, I've Regretted Every Minute, Dont Believe Me, Try It Yourself, You'll Be Sorry Real Soon.
For some companies, some use a HD Tech for Lvl 1 calls and an onsite Lvl 2 tech that will resolve more complex issues or performs IMACs (Installs, Moves, Adds, Changes) as well as the in person help that the HUMAN species relies on. No one likes having someone just log onto their machine without knowing them. The lvl 2 techs are still quite busy working on projects in addition to being a tech.
I think it's a waste of money for a company to keep someone around like a hd tech. People should know by now anyway but it's more economical to outsource the job to companies dedicated to the service instead of someone waiting around for someone with a computer problem; doesn't make much sense.
I disagree - these helpdesk jobs can parley into a good Network Admin/Engineer position - or even up to IT Manager or IT Director. I speak from experience. I hate that they outsource overseas.

"...additional computer science education will probably be necessary"
Or you can just be born in the 21st century, be atleast 16 years old and know all this shit already.

Of course if you were "born in the 21st century" you would be no more than 9 years old, not 16.
