Isn't it weird that classical music goes so superbly well with movies(games) in the SciFi genre????
I could be an arrogant shit here, but a note for future directors-- If you cannot incorporate a classical piece into your movie, there is a good chance your movie is stillborn shit.
Kharak burning, attack ships fighting in the Gardens of Kadesh, I’ve watched Bentusi die like twinkling fireflies at Tannhauser Gate… all those moments, lost in time, like tears in the rain.
I remember the first time I came to this mission. It truly nearly made me cry. The music is so beautiful, the scene of the homeworld being destroyed. It was very deep.
I love Homeworld! Too bad for all the legal issues with the rights or maybe we would get a Homeworld 3 someday. Loved the opening theme here, reminds me of Gorecki Symphony No. 3 sometimes.
@B1GMACNFR1ES Very probably yes. Might be a bit finicky though, and it will likely take some effort to make work. It runs on mine though, and I have vista, so I'd say it will.
Anyone else notice that the ships in the upper right are just mirrored images of the ships below? The support frigates are flying upside down. Noticed it on the cover of the homeworld strategy guide I have, always bugged me
This is actually a famous composition by Samuel Barber known as Adagio for Strings (as you can hear, many variations not actually featuring strings have been recorded as well).
This song remember me the Karak burning, but some unlucky cryo trays are behing shot by pesky assault frigates, you capture one and remember how your "Homeworld" is destroyed.
Humanity has made it so far. Our genius peaked ever so high when we conquered the stars. Yet many millennia have past, and we are lost once again. Our age old tendencies of violence towards one another have once again ravaged our race. Have we forgotten how we have risen so high? Have we forgotten why the necessity of expansion was so grave to us? Alas, these reasons are all lost in oblivion in the continuum of time. What higher being will come down and save us from ourselves now?
@czuket Both are copies of an actual composition. This song is called "Adagio for strings" and it was composed by Samuel Barber over 50 years ago. The Platoon version is a copy, this version is an adaptation. Adagio for strings has been voted as the saddest work ever multiple times.
is this the same song that is in the beginning of platoon? I am hearing this song more and more often in modern films, i love it though brings back the days of my youth and memories of WON :)
also great soundtrack i think it won soundtrack of the year for a gaming title.
@Mx023 Yes. The song is called "Adagio for strings", composed by Samuel Barber. It has been voted multiple times to be the saddest piece of music ever written.

@Kulska they last quit large story that needs to be told like the eye of arran or that the bentusi are liveing in an other galaxy or the progeniters aren't dead some thing along those lines
@TheKlungo Yeah, but thats the reviewers. There was still not many people who knew about it even though it became the best game of the year. But i'm thinking on all the games. I barely think some has even heard of Homeworld Cataclysm. Its really underrated by the players if you think of other games.
i love the Taiidan Empires units in this game they look waaaay more awsome then they do in Homeworld 2 i think, but the taiidan mothership in homeworld 1 is so UGLY atleast i think so....ooh and what happend to Sierra studios, they made so many awsome games like Homeworld and Ground Control, but that was so long ago, and i was hoping they would keep making games like that.
Relic is the makers of Homeworld and THQ there new Bosses and there is evidence that THQ have bought the rights to HOMEWORLD so we might see a new game from them.
Relic right now are working on Company of Heroes: Online, Dawn of War and a Space Marine Game
Massive Entertainment (they made GC) are now owned by UBI soft and if you liked GC you should check out World in Conflict it is not the same, but close.
Homeworld 3 Recommended System Requirements - CPU: 3.5ghz Quad Core or above, with multithreading support. RAM - 8GB RAM dual channel. GPU: ATI 5900 series, Nvidia GTX480 or faster (for DirectX 11.0). OS: Windows Vista/ 7 64-bit. Oh my god, time for an upgrade.
PC gaming will always be superior to the consoles. Developers just need to realize that to stop piracy, they have to create EXCLUSIVE PC titles without DRM; then people will be willing to spend money.
@aaron5364 I think PC gaming was at a decline is pretty much due to the cost for the consumers. A console does not need upgrade very often. you can play 360 for 4-5 years with very small upstart cost compare with a good gaming PC. So with game titles costing pretty much the same, most new-gen (especially casual gamers) would choose console. True hardcore gamers who also know how to upgrade PC to get the best out of them are a rare and dying breed.
This game was the first pc game I ever played. As a 5 year old boy watching my dad play I was mesmerized at the beauty of this extraordinary game, brings back a lot of fun memories.
This music really brings a tear to someone's eye. This brings so many memories back to life! I wonder why there is no film or anime about Homeworld. Just look at the cutscenes of Homeworld... they're made in anime-style.
Homeworld surely is one of the beste games ever made. And this music really fits to the game. Damn, I love it when the soundtrack sounds so fucking epic and dramatic!
I'm part of the latest gaming generation, based on consoles, yet I played this game, and loved it. The opening to this song is enough, yet there was more music, and entire game, and a sequal. Brings a tear to one's eye.

this always moves me. Homeworld is a masterpiece. Games are the ultimate art, nothing renders emotion more powerfully than in a game with an incredible story and music.
Also when they capture the Taidan dude and the quote 'the subject did not survive interrogation.'
@RibonFox First time I played this game back then, hearing her say that brought me almost to tears, you truly felt for them... was so moving and sad. Incredible story for a game, one of the best I've ever played.
@RibonFox "All of us left. Everything's gone...Kharak is burning.

@powerofdestiny Truth to be told, there are many old games that i will probably remember until the day i die. Starting from Cannon Fodder, Universe, Prince of Persia, Franko or Flashback on my Amiga 550, to the old games like Homeworld, Half-Life or Fallout 2.... too bad they dont make games so immersive and compelling theese days.
@Daishi216 I'm forced to agree, So many games these days just really don't interest me. I want games that are really deep in the story department, Not drowned out with senseless war and violence.
Well, i did replay all of the homeworld games lately, and to be honest i wont say HW2 sucked, i would rather say that HW1 was awesome and breathtaking , HW2 was "just" good.
i love this game this song sounds so sad i keep picturing the horrible things in the world this is truely a masterpiece if a piece of music can give you emotion by its self one word about this song
Was this song created specifically for Homeworld? I remember when playing HW for the first time, I had a feeling I'd heard this song before somewhere, though I couldn't remember where or when.
I've never seen Platoon, so that isn't it, but then I was correct - it is in fact a (well?) known composition, and not made specifically for Homeworld.
Most likely I've heard some techno/trance remix of it somewhere a long time ago.
this game has revolutionated the 3d strategi game genre. this game is epic and the music is to die for. so peacefull. it will allways bring tears to my eyes
but i will always remember this song when i think of homeworld... i can still remember the first time i heard it... it was mission 4/5 or something like that (my memory starts to fool me)...
In gameplay, skirmish, multiplayer, the second is better I think, but in story, Homeworld 1 is the best of any game I have ever played and... Is better than all but a handful of the best movies ever produced... something few games can come close to.
every time i hear this it puts a tear in my heart.......you heard this music when you returned to kharak from a warp jump when you relize that kharak was burned to sinders by a race called the tiidan awsome game!!!!!!
While this is the main theme on the Homeworld OST, I believe that it is actually "Agnus Dei" which is the eight-voice choral version of "Adagio for Strings" composed by Samuel Barber in 1936. I just felt that was worth noting. This track appears in lots of other media as well.
Fits the mood perfectly of the launch of the Mothership and Return to Kharak perfectly though.
Isn't it weird that classical music goes so superbly well with movies(games) in the SciFi genre????
I could be an arrogant shit here, but a note for future directors-- If you cannot incorporate a classical piece into your movie, there is a good chance your movie is stillborn shit.

Was this song created specifically for Homeworld? I remember when playing HW for the first time, I had a feeling I'd heard this song before somewhere, though I couldn't remember where or when.

@forbjok
Cant say where you might have heard this since it is a widely known score, but hearing this made me think of the theme from Platoon.

It's Adagio for Strings by Barber. It's featured prominently in Platoon.

I've never seen Platoon, so that isn't it, but then I was correct - it is in fact a (well?) known composition, and not made specifically for Homeworld.
Most likely I've heard some techno/trance remix of it somewhere a long time ago.

If you ever find out what that remix was, let me know. I'm curious.

It's "Adagio for Strings", it's a very old song, and many orchestras play it

When it comes to in-game atmosphere, this game was and still is one of the best, second part misses that...

I remember I was 11 when I first played this game... and cried when I first played through the sequence. Emotional to say the least

well it was a better game but the story kinda sucked big time... so yeah the first homeworld was better overall :)

Homeworld 2 wasn't as good as the first one ? I just downloaded the game and want an opinion about the second game.

@TheNameTooSexyToShow
In gameplay, skirmish, multiplayer, the second is better I think, but in story, Homeworld 1 is the best of any game I have ever played and... Is better than all but a handful of the best movies ever produced... something few games can come close to.

It's really neat listening to all those voices when you're floating alone in the infinite vastness of space with nothing but yourself for company.
