Wow, your story resonates with me so much. I started emotional eating around the same (when I was a kid) and have definitely had my struggles with binge eating as well. I never thought to separate the two. This make so much SENSE now. Thanks for sharing!
continued.. This is a major insight! Linking this to learned helplessness is a stroke of genius. I am a neurobiologist and I was aware of this effect but it never occurred to me that I was in fact behaving like this myself. You are spot on. Why not do a PhD on that?
Great job on the research, congrats! Your insights (and the humorous delivery!) really helped me to think constructively about the issue of emotional eating. I was/am certainly concentrated on dealing with my negative emotions.. So even when it's 'working', what I do is eat well and exercise/meditate to feel better but what I do not do is deal with the REASONS why I have negative feelings.
When I get anxious, I clean the house. There must really be something to Feng Shui because when I'm emotionally a mess, so is my house. The house is a reflection of what's going on in my head. As a coping skill I clean my house when something is really bothering me it it really brings me peace to see a clean house. It clears my head and after that, the problems seem to resolve themselves like a magic. The negative self talk dissapears.
emotional eating at 9? that is a tragedy,. did you know what you were doing or are you now looking back and seeing that is what you were doing?
why can't we just get off the processed food wagon and avoid the depression because that wagon contributes to our depression. eating well will boost our coping skills for just a start. then the weight loss will make us happy and a positive cycle has begun. we all need coping mechanims so make it the treadmill.
Thanks you so so soo much for these videos...I've felt stuck for a while and these videos are truly helping me. Do you have any recommendations on books about task oriented coping? Thanks so much!
That's horrible about the dogs - that should be illegal to do things like that. I think we can already understand that we learn to be victims and not help ourselves over time, dont need to torture dogs to know that! gah how do they get approval for things like that >:(
@ByeByeBelly I know it is absolutely horrible! This in no way helps those poor pups in the study but it may help your heartache to know that Martin Seligman (the guy who was an assistant in the study) became quite famous in psychology and worked very diligently to stop the cruelty to animals. The study was 30+ years ago and I do not believe the APA would allow this treatment today- because of Martin's lobbying. So sorry to share a story with you that was so painful to hear!!!
Hi Josie, thank you so much for all your videos. You really break down intuitive eating in a way that makes it much easier to understand and implement it. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, you are an inspiration. I hope you keep making these videos :)
@hypeegirl Hey Hypegirl (super cute username!) Thank YOU..wow what a nice thing to hear! I think it is a direct result of how hard it was for me to understand...if that makes sense. Books would say to just" sit through negative emotions" and I would be like "'what in the world does that look like!!??" I needed the paint by numbers step by step answers and they were nowhere to be found !! Your kind words are really encouraging I am SO glad that this connects with you!!! thanks!
Hi! I've just watched a couple of your vids, and this is so true, but seems kind of hidden for those who truly need it.
Thank you so much for researching and sharing what you've found out, I will truly try to think about this, and try to stop myself from emotional eating. This about those walls, the high walls for me was the bullyers, they never gave me some spare-time from their meanings about my slightly bigger tummy. This is so true, that about the dogs. Love this, life-changing words!
@butseente Oh I am so glad that this resonated with you and was helpful! Oh that sounds painful and terrible about the bullyers...the walls are down now...you can jump out of any situation or relationship that gives you such pain! I bet your younger self would have thrived with someone tender and strong to go and take care of her and defend her to the bullyers...you get to be that to you now!
omgoodness this video could not be more relatable!! its funny because i just learned about task/emotion oriented problem solving ( and learned men are usually more task oriented and women more emotionally oriented...which sucks haah) BUT my teachers did NOT go into any ways of changing emotion oriented people!
your videos are amazing and im so curious what your profession is/where you went to school because your talking about many things i learned in school!
Thank you! I'm currently battling anorexia, after intuitively eating my entire life and not caring how "good" or "bad" the food going into my body was, I'm finding your videos very helpful! I have soooooo driven to a donut shop, and made myself wait until I got home to eat my 3 donuts, literally trembling while I ate them! It's as if the food was some magical thing and not just some concoction of calories and nutrients to keep me alive... You need to post more videos! <3
This information will change my life. I can't thank you enough for posting these vids. . I've been living in a cage with the door wide open, but was always afraid to leave. Plz keep making more videos!! God bless u!
Ok - so I kinda broke down and cried while watching this. I am a laying down dog who needs some new tools. Tools I have searched for since adolescence realizing - hey - my life is not like the other kids. I never thought I was strong enough or good enough. My weight is an emotional band-aid upon band-aid.... You better not rip even one off or I might fall apart. I have not yet watched all your videos - Do you share the resources you learned about for task-oriented coping?
Hi Josie...I have never been a "YouTuber" (although I knew of it, and had been sent various forwards from friends) but when I got my newest cell phone, YouTube was an app, so I decided to check it out. I think I have watched them all, am ready to embark on a new life journey using the tools you have shared, and am wondering what is going on with you now. Any new materials? Thanks so much! Teresa in Cali :-)
I love the way you incorporate research in all you videos!!! You are great in explaining the obvious that we sometimes do not take the time to reflect on! Keep up the good work your discussions are very motivating:)
Wow Josie! This video was incredible, and you spoke right to my heart. I want to thank you for enlightening me today about the cycle of overeating and how we learn helplessness. Dieting has been a struggle for me and though I finally had success with it and lost 20 lbs last year I had this sinking feeling that I would gain it all back and developed serious anxiety that lead to panick attacks. I used food to medicate my anxiety. And have since gained all the weight back. ANyway I get it now! TY!
This is a very good, informative video. But you do need to understand the complex causes of what you call "mental pathology". For instance, you make no differentiation between reactive and endogenous depression, which are different illnesses, and is important to the point you are making.
i mean i want to lose weight, but everytime i go over a little bit or something stressful happens that i cant control i end up gorging myself to death.. like tonight i ended up ordering a medium pizza and a pzone, and eating it all! :(
Not too long ago, I discovered that counting calories makes me OBSESSED! I counted calories for one day - ONE. DAY. - and I was obsessing about calories for a whole week after that! By the end of that one day I realized what was going on and decided to stop. So I didn't do it the next day, but noticed I was still obsessing about how many calories were in a slice of tomato, so that's when I vowed I would NEVER count calories again so long as I lived! (And I haven't, thank goodness!)
That was an AWESOME presentation! I knew about the studies and the research you referenced so what you were saying was not new to me. HOWEVER, the way you put it together connecting the dots in a PRACTICAL way for people who are not psychologists was BRILLIANT! ***applause***
I hope you have gone on to find a way to use your humongous talent to reach a whole heap of people who desperately need this enlightenment. You have MAD skillz!!!
This really hit home--the study about the dogs, it all made sense. The only thing is that it doesn't just apply to food with me, it applies to my whole life...so I need too learn task-oriented coping and intuitive eating. I have such a screwed up relationship with food that it's hard to tell if I'm hungry or not. Help?
@madapova "It applies to my whole life" I can SO relate...but the cool part is when you learn the skill to cope in a powerful way it ALSO applies to your whole life-- so hold on to your hat my friend you will absolutely LOVE YOUR LIFE...about the hunger- I have an audio series coming out next month (hopefully) and it covers that in full detail- if you subscribe I am going to post a vid when they are available!
I have watched your videos and am so grateful to you for posting them on youtube. You have no idea the impact you have had on my life. I have been struggling with this problem for years and now I really feel there is hope. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for posting videos. You have a way of explaining all of this without being condescending and humorous. Please continue to do what you do! It helps so many people, including myself.
Cool video, I like the way you talk! But I'm still wondering... I'm sure there ARE situations where you are helpless even as an adult. And: Often food makes me more awake, gives new energy - THEN I can cope more easily with the situation. And what about eating because of boredom??
Anyway, I'll try to decide when I really want to eat and when it is just stress.
I enjoy your videos, I am currently trying to control my emotional eating. I have also read part of Martin Seligman's book in the past and remember I found it very facsinating. I have subscribed, thanks!
Hey thanks! I'm a big fan of sharing what we learn so hopefully we can all use each others shortcuts- and get on with our fabulous lives!! Thanks for the kind note!!
I had an extremely irregular and bad relationship with food for about 4-5 years and not until THIS year did I acutually start to get a better handle on it.
Sadly, the study was real with the dogs but Marty Seligman was a grad student then and has since become very influential in the field of psychology and is a big proponent of animal ethics/animal rights in research- clearly that study freaked him out as well!
I'm glad to know that. Today was my first day of coping like a skinny person, and the weight seems to be falling off without me having to do a thing (yes, after one day!). Thank you for making these videos for everyone, it's really nice of you. And what you said about people with slow metabolism getting hungry less often makes so much sense. I never before realized that I was confusing stress with hunger!
wow, i've watched a lot of videos on eating and yours are the best by far. you're extremely honest, informative, and funny :) thanks for what you do on here.
Your Dad rocks... (I've seen him on your channel) .I love that he told you about that study when you were young-!! He reminds me of my Dad- who would break out aerodynamic equations when I'd ask him things like 'Daddy how do birds fly?' - the best!
I was following your vids and it all made sense and then on the last one (the 7th one I think) I was completely confounded by the discovery that you were on a 1200 cal plan, which seemed to totally contradict everything else you'd illustrated, and I thought 'I'm obviously NOT understanding this after all'. So I was relieved then to see your current vid which put everything back to 'normal'! I would certainly binge after a 1200 cal diet.... Good luck, keep 'em coming x
I know right! Sorry for the scare!!! It confounded me too for the few days I did it!!
I was so disappointed that I was eating when I wasn't hungry at times I doubted intuitive eating (which worked in the past)..I am SO grateful I found the missing piece of the puzzle....intuitive eating works to soothe the distressed eating caused by restricting and task-oriented coping is the tool to counter the emotional eating. I guess I had to get off track for a couple of days to find it :) !!
Sure. I realized I called these 'amazing' in the vid I think I misspoke a bit...
Christopher Fairburn's Overcoming binge eating: it has a few pages on problem solving.. really basic
I have not read this one: The second was: Handbook of Eating Disorders and Obesity by J. Kevin Thompson specifically mentions Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
I found some helpful info w/ a google-books search on task-oriented coping and stress inoculation training.
SO SO True! I agree...no more strict diets! Im starting to wait until I am really hungry and listen to what my body craves or else you will binge. I believe in treating your body.
So Sad about the dogs. and omg i just realized that i eat 90% of the time when i am stressed!! Its so weird how that happens.
hi! i have been working on intuitive eating to help me recover from my eating disorder (binge eating) after the book was recomended to me by my phycotherapist. you like talked about a community ( to get rid of your calorie counting? i was wondering if i could join?
Oh... the committee I was talking about referred to my previous video where I was talking about treating each of the individual needs I had as separate 'committee' members in my head....so it was my internal committee that I was talking about......However there is a yahoo group for intuitive eating you can join- it is pretty active.
Have you ever thought of writing a book?? Come on!!!!! :) To know you is to love you. This was amazing and SO encouraging. I feel like task-oriented coping is the answer for so many things. You rock!!
ps....what DID Justin Timberlake eat for lunch yesterday? :)
I cannot thank you enough for this video.I want to know how does it feel to know that you are touching so many hearts with your videos. You are awesome!!!
Your video came at such a great time -- I recently went through some childhood photos and saw the progression of my weight gain. I reflected on all of the things going on around me at that time (parents splitting up, remarriage, yadda yadda). The photos put emotional eating in perspective and I am now trying to be more aware of my actions/behaviors. Thank you for this insight!
Wow that is such an interesting exercise... to look back at pictures! What a great way to visually observe what was going on.....Ok so coping can be to blame for the weight.....what ever can I blame my funky 80's clothes on :)
Read Explaining colours to a blind man. Not only will it enlighten many as to what living with a mental illness is like, it also gives comfort to those sufferers who think there is no hope and that they are alone. It is very informative, sometimes shocking but also very funny in parts. All in all, a good read and highly recommended.
Hi Josie, have you thought about writing a book? Seriously????
How ironic that not being able to find task-orientated-coping and then feeling overwhelmed led to possible over-eating but you then went ahead and emailed her / him which was you actually coping by doing tasks!
Aw thanks hba!!! So glad this resonated with you as well!! Yes, I am still gathering info....freakishly scarce... but will definitely post when I do!!! Let me know if you find anything good!
Thanks!! I have found some very brief high level info...more descriptive like "takes action, seeks solutions" .....still seeking the instructional/how-to 'pay dirt'....will definitely post when I do!!!
Wow, your story resonates with me so much. I started emotional eating around the same (when I was a kid) and have definitely had my struggles with binge eating as well. I never thought to separate the two. This make so much SENSE now. Thanks for sharing!

I never before realized that I was confusing stress with hunger!

I have talked about that dog study before - my dad told me about that when I was little. I LOVE your use of it's implications here OMG <3!
I just love love love love love love love love this video - and just AGH everyone must see it!
Thank you for being you and for doing all this research and most importantly for being on YouTube and sharing :D

Your Dad rocks... (I've seen him on your channel) .I love that he told you about that study when you were young-!! He reminds me of my Dad- who would break out aerodynamic equations when I'd ask him things like 'Daddy how do birds fly?' - the best!

Your videos are always brilliant!! I always have to watch like 3 times! <33333333333333333333

Good luck, keep 'em coming x
mollabob 2 years ago
I know right! Sorry for the scare!!! It confounded me too for the few days I did it!!
I was so disappointed that I was eating when I wasn't hungry at times I doubted intuitive eating (which worked in the past)..I am SO grateful I found the missing piece of the puzzle....intuitive eating works to soothe the distressed eating caused by restricting and task-oriented coping is the tool to counter the emotional eating. I guess I had to get off track for a couple of days to find it :) !!

Wow, you are truly amazing for this. Brilliant!

thank you so much for posting the study and explaining the two types of coping! could you please post the resources that she sent you?
jenniferstuff 2 years ago
Hope this helps. Let us know what you find!

SO SO True! I agree...no more strict diets! Im starting to wait until I am really hungry and listen to what my body craves or else you will binge. I believe in treating your body.
So Sad about the dogs. and omg i just realized that i eat 90% of the time when i am stressed!! Its so weird how that happens.

hi! i have been working on intuitive eating to help me recover from my eating disorder (binge eating) after the book was recomended to me by my phycotherapist. you like talked about a community ( to get rid of your calorie counting? i was wondering if i could join?
iwanttobepopular1 2 years ago
HI IWTBP1!!
Oh... the committee I was talking about referred to my previous video where I was talking about treating each of the individual needs I had as separate 'committee' members in my head....so it was my internal committee that I was talking about......However there is a yahoo group for intuitive eating you can join- it is pretty active.

Great!

If there was a rating "awesomelybrilliant" I would have given you that many stars.
Now you have me "googling", could you add those great references to the side bar or do another video.
