For those of you who took this too literally. I pity your closed mind and ignorance. Of course external forces that may harm you. But them being your enemy? How much you think they are against you? That is yourself projecting. And the man in that "machine gun nest" is having the same problem. But please go ahead and don't accept these words sense you've already figured it all out. You we're told the answer long ago and that is the way it will stay. Isn't it?
Well, I do agree that the ego or the self is the greatest enemy, but the idea that there are no external enemies is rubbish; they are real, just less dangerous.
So that wild pack of dogs trying to eat me arnt my enemy? There just my ego trying to rip apart my flesh for dinner?Good thing soldiers dont have military trainers like these guys.Dont worry about that enemy machine gun nest, thats just your ego trying to kill you."It doesnt exist" Stand up an find out!!! XD
100% of our enemies are our creation? Seems like hyperbole. A tiger chasing you is a legitimate enemy unless you are fine with dying in which case it's difficult to have sensible discussion because you will presumably be ending your life promptly.
Hey guys I have a question. Let's say it's WW2 and this Is America and we are fighting Hitler and Germany. An enlightened person would realize that hitler is not the enemy but our own ego. If hitler realized his ego he would probably stop as well. Let's say he didn't. Would we still be controlled by our ego for simply defending ourselves?
@123e3 yes to defend youself with convenn tional weapons ..check out the Bagvad Gita this problem is adressed. Arjun i think it is who faces this dilemma. .My take on it is if you trancend ego there is no duallity .
@123e3 Yes to fight against evil with evil would be egoic madness checkout Ekhart Tolle on this subject .you neeed 2 egos for a war or a fight conventionally .In The Bagavad Gita Arjun is faced with the dilemma of fighting a batlle against his family ..My understanding is that if you trancend ego in your awerness the is no duality .In the words of Ramana Maharshi when asked how to treat others he said There are no others
This is all twisting the FACTs. FACTs, we all have identities and we all do sometimes things wrong, it is important for psychiatrists to stop cornering maliciously psychopathically and start helping people to understand that we need to live together in coexistence, instead of cornering soft wrongness’s and exaggerating things out of their proportionality to create environments, where you psychopaths can rule over our societies by rejecting the facts without any compassion of accepting the facts.
@jamesguenes Did you listen to anything they said or did you just condemn them straight away because they are psychiatrist's...are you from scientology?
I read somewhere, it is not a struggle to overcome or "beat" the ego, as if it were an enemy. Humility shows us what its all about. We are in fact all different angles of the same thing. Imagine that everything that exists were just one big mechanism. Each individual would just be "something" that is happening amongst this one big thing. Our ego is in fact our sense of self.. which is not a bad .. or good thing.. its just a thing. But we let our egos get too big, we believe the self to be real.
So to an extent, we dont have to worry about "trying" to be egoless. Just try to realise that every time that voice in your head tells you to avoid/do/hide/lie/pretend in fear that you wont be accepted.. it is merely your sense of self trying to protect itself.Your decisions could be based on what is necessary in each moment, the idea that your decisions are so important is just another facet of ego. Once you just are what you are, then decisions are based on what you are.
Ego is your self identity, and while Samuels had a point people want to protect it, this isn't uniform. If someone insults you, you won't default on murder to solve it, some people have low self esteem and... honestly, that seems worse off. Believing you've mastered your self enough to control your ego seems... egotistical. Huh, unfortunate word, but there we go. Bottom-line, in my opinion, Ego isn't evil it's just your self.
True Self is the self that, even though you might hate someone at work, you still respect them and can learn from them and work with them. Ego Self would be the self that does petty things to harm the other person simply because you do not like them. It is acting selfishly. True Self would act _selflessly_ and not hurt others.
@rolyatyasmar great question! There was word that RIchie was working on a documentary about ego but it seems to have never seen the light of day. A great example of how ego (as in Revolver) will keep any looking at it suppressed. A key moment in Revolver is when Jake realizes the truth of what's been happening... and the truth is that we are all addicts to approval. My wild guess is that releasing his documentary may have killed his career as people would not "approve" of it. Irony!
Deepak might be in it for the money but he talks Vedic scripture and that my friend is one of the first cultures to be enlightened, enlightenment is release from ego and recognition of the true self. He has authority on the issue because of his culture and his understanding of the Vedic teachings.
The western psychologist might be able to describe the ego, but so can anyone willing to look in his own psyche, what the westerners don't give is a solution to the problem.
@chinopisces If you seriously believe that, you need go do more research. First off, his qualifications are to be an endocrinologist. His entire "empire" is built upon lies and pseudoscience. On top of all that, he is fucking annoying. Go watch his debate with Sam Harris and see him just get absolutely obliterated. But, I think you are trying to troll me just a little and that's fine.
@MuseManMike: Annoying to you perhaps. To the East, he is widely respected. Whatever "empire" you're perceiving must be from your own imagination. He is not interested in power or wealth.
Saw the debate. Sam Harris is a Western tool. So are you. Ignorant and pompous.
This should open up a whole new world of consciousness, I am 60 yrs old now. but I remember reading a book of GREAT QUOTATIONS as a 14 yr old child. There was one quotation in it that hit me like a sledge hammer. I was by Guatama Sidartha 2500 yrs ago. He said. "I HAVE CONQUERED THE GREATEST ENEMY OF ALL, I HAVE CONQUERED MY OWN EGO"
WOW, Here all these yrs later I still struggle what path to follow, one that feeds my ego self survival or the path that raises the consciousness of all beings?
It is amusing when one realizes that all our beliefs are simply the manifestation of our egos. Whether it is religion/"personal relationship with god", philosophy and sometimes even science. Our beliefs are rarely founded in "truth", they are simply based on individual egos uniting under different banners.
is it true that people really hear the "person's" voice inside of them? like there is someone inside in their head who actually talking and telling what to do?
What's the name of that last song? ...the one you hear in the menu or in the ending credits! I would really apreciat if someone could help, it is so... :D
Like all (or almost everything), the ego can be good or bad. If I ensures individuality, personal safety, independence of opinions is good, if I feed the vanity, gives me a sense of superiority and brings me to the ridiculous pride is bad. But you need the ego, the rolling work of consciousness, the overcoming of ego-ism, in composition, with other selves, the collective.
People think they can control their thoughts. What they don't realize is that those thoughts aren't there's. The body isn't you, the thoughts aren't you, the senses aren't you.
The ego's whole trick is to identify you (Witness) with content.
And it actually goes even deeper than that... waaay deeper. Read Nisargadatta, David R. Hawkins, Michael Langford.
these "creations" manifest as real people and as much as i tell myself this external enemy dosnt exist its much harder to "tell myself'" my head dosnt hurt after its been punched by one of them
I am so glad they included this in the ending. Not paying attention to this scene is the leading cause of (wholly erronious) claims that Revolver sucks.
this way your decisions are made by a conscious model of yourself and not from you really. You take everything to your conscious and your unconscious is almost lost. Then you are feeling you are not existing. The good thing is that you are always existing, you just have to be attached to that and not your ex-self.Anyhow, you are trying to remember your ex-self by words and words cannot describe fully a human. So you are really attached to something different than you, that is not even existing
ego more or less is the attachment to a previous "good" situation like imprisoning. You have to imagine what yourself would do in that past situation when "yourself" was thinking correct to decide what reality is now. This ex-self is supposed to be the ego. Like trying to not change yourself from what you felt you are in a good period. The point is, that only if you are open to changes you will stay the same. There are millions of ways to describe ego but finally the feeling of it is one.
i only see the ego being a real threat 2 people who arent mentally stable...like the character played by ray liotta in this movie...by affecting their reasoning and decision making
but i cant see it being any problem 2 someone who is in total control of their mind, and who wouldnt let it get the better of them...?
but i want someone 2 prove me wrong cos i wanna learn...im not arrogant :L...tnx
@gavinlawlor93 how many people do you know who are in total control of their mind? when you get upset, angry or jelous, do you always stay cold and think carefully what are you going to say or do next? Many people dont, and you cant blame them for that - you simply cannot analyze your thoughts every second of every day. But i think the main problem is that they are simply not aware of their ego.
@dotLT Yeah totally. like Girls who think they are hot shit when they arent. or when guys get all cocky and have no idea that it is making them look like a douchbag.
@gavinlawlor93 to them it's the same think as their personality, not something separated. And you just can't fight something, if you dont even know it exists.
@gavinlawlor93 - Gavin, the ego is the incessant chatter of your mind that simultaneous thinks that it's a distinct and separate entity but at the same time is extremely paranoid that it doesn't exist. Very few people even have the mental awareness to know that that they are not their thoughts.
@gavinlawlor93 I highly recomend you the book of the EGO from OSHO and I'll also try to send you a great video, peace and good luck finding your own ego boundary :D :D :D
@gavinlawlor93 I have been studying the shaman named Don Juan Matis, He refers to the EGO as an "Foreign Installation". He tells us it is from the depths of the cosmos. I have 8 videos that deal with the ego as a foreign installation. The language is different but the meaning is the same.
@gavinlawlor93 If some one tells you that they can controll their mind, you know at that point that it is the ego speaking. No one can control their mind only their attention.
Whenever you're scared of the dark, if you're angry, or when you feel a need to impress, the ego (personified as Sam Gold) has indentified itself with you. What Jason Statham visually portrays in Revolver is a beautiful and powerful message -- he observes the thoughts that his mind creates, he observes the emotions that he feels, and however dark the room is, whatever his mind tells him, he knows that what he feels is that which Sam Gold wants him to feel.
There is so much beyond our minds. Don't allow the ego to influence your actions towards those who have succumbed to it. It will be difficult when the time comes; to think about what you feel, to think about what you should say, and why you look back at your past in resentment. This is exactly what Mr. Green learns, his fears, his actions, his struggle to go where he doesn't want to go. His fight with his internal enemy leads to his liberation.
And I completely agree with Dibuxxxx: I thoroughly hope I reach out to those who feel like their lives are incomplete, or that there is something you are missing at this very moment, whether it is attainable or not, to read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. If you do find yourself with the book, please read it when you have the day to yourself.
My mum gave the book to me months ago, and I criticized its title, put it aside to forget. But then I saw Revolver again, it led me somewhere amazing.
@gavinlawlor93 Well for starters, look at Hitler, Bernie Maddof, Richard Nixon, any one that feels a gun is his only defense in a paranoid world. People that see everyone as an enemy are extremely guided by their ego. People that will rip you off at a used car lot, this can go just about anywhere, even church leaders JIMI SWAGGART?. Just realize the more materialistic a person the more the ego is in charge. I-ME-MINE and those that are ruthless about how they gather wealth?? LOOK OUT!!
@gavinlawlor93-I would look into the teachings of Zen or Buddha (not the religious aspect) for the reference to ego here. "Ego" is a Latin word for "the I". We're not talking about the "ego" word used to translate Freud's work. This ego is the false "I" that forms in childhood. The voice in our head that considers itself separate from everything and yet it's possessions are part of it (people, cars, knowledge). It will do anything to gain approval, anything. But, it is false, just mental concept
@gavinlawlor93 You know when your friend says hey lets do this"..." and he says something crazy and part of you wants to and the other part say "fuck no, thats retarted" thats your Ego and your conscious arguing with eachother. I have a theory that in your dreams, your ego is just seeing what would of happned if "it" got its decision. make sense?
I am tired, I am good, I am bad, I deserve better, I deserve less, I deserve more, I am not smart enough, I am smarter then you, I am the best, I am the Worst, I am the greatest,i cant learn that, I am free.. I am you.
Internal projection
What is this, boring, this sucks, Yeah right, what an idiot, where is this place, awesome, amazing,
I in Latin is EGO, therefore when you represent yourself As hello nice to meet you I am so and so. That really is your ego being externally projected and hiding behind your name. After a name is just something for something else to hide behind.....remember that..
pleased to meet you...hope you guess my name(...) puzzling you is the nature of my game
When he wrote that line I dont think he realized what it really ment...and what he even ment by it...or its implications...
As bad as the ego is, you can never _get rid of it_ ....the real goal is to lose your sense of identity with it. Ego will always be there - it's your sense of identity with it that causes much of the problem.
I had the worst trip once on mushrooms and after the trip I felt as if I had no ego everything was neutral and in that moment you see people how they are and even if there are "bad' people you don't see them as such you just see these people like they are in a strugle. Its a weird feeling that I have lost after that morning, but it was beautifull. XTC in my opinion also puts your ego away which makes you understand people which in turn makes you live them.
@colloredbrothers AMEN! well put my, i sometimes do XTC, did shrooms too. Indeed, Xtc makes you remove the ego and makes you put problems of others in the first place, don't matter what your going through.
If you wanna destroy EGO to save the people - they destroy YOU to save their own ego.

123e3 9 months ago
@123e3 By creating coherence in the collective conciousness the birth of an enemy is prevented.

@stokey72 no dude i know there is no such thing as an enemy. All I'm wondering is if it would be egotistical to defend yourself
123e3 8 months ago
@123e3 yes to defend youself with convenn tional weapons ..check out the Bagvad Gita this problem is adressed. Arjun i think it is who faces this dilemma. .My take on it is if you trancend ego there is no duallity .
stokey72 8 months ago

Once you overcome the ego, what are you? What happens when you are ego-less? What are your decisions then based on?
RonnieBlack444 11 months ago
I read somewhere, it is not a struggle to overcome or "beat" the ego, as if it were an enemy. Humility shows us what its all about. We are in fact all different angles of the same thing. Imagine that everything that exists were just one big mechanism. Each individual would just be "something" that is happening amongst this one big thing. Our ego is in fact our sense of self.. which is not a bad .. or good thing.. its just a thing. But we let our egos get too big, we believe the self to be real.
timmysgonnagetcha 10 months ago
So to an extent, we dont have to worry about "trying" to be egoless. Just try to realise that every time that voice in your head tells you to avoid/do/hide/lie/pretend in fear that you wont be accepted.. it is merely your sense of self trying to protect itself.Your decisions could be based on what is necessary in each moment, the idea that your decisions are so important is just another facet of ego. Once you just are what you are, then decisions are based on what you are.

Dfnoboy 1 year ago
o.o this seems kinda backwards.
Theninjasarecoming 1 year ago
@Theninjasarecoming There is True Self and then there is Ego Self.
True Self is the self that, even though you might hate someone at work, you still respect them and can learn from them and work with them. Ego Self would be the self that does petty things to harm the other person simply because you do not like them. It is acting selfishly. True Self would act _selflessly_ and not hurt others.

What documentary is this from?
rolyatyasmar 1 year ago 2
@rolyatyasmar great question! There was word that RIchie was working on a documentary about ego but it seems to have never seen the light of day. A great example of how ego (as in Revolver) will keep any looking at it suppressed. A key moment in Revolver is when Jake realizes the truth of what's been happening... and the truth is that we are all addicts to approval. My wild guess is that releasing his documentary may have killed his career as people would not "approve" of it. Irony!

@rolyatyasmar Its not from a documentary its from a movie called "Revolver" staring Jason Statham and Andre 3000. Great movie too :)

WOW, Here all these yrs later I still struggle what path to follow, one that feeds my ego self survival or the path that raises the consciousness of all beings?
stcrzyaatyrs 1 year ago
It is amusing when one realizes that all our beliefs are simply the manifestation of our egos. Whether it is religion/"personal relationship with god", philosophy and sometimes even science. Our beliefs are rarely founded in "truth", they are simply based on individual egos uniting under different banners.

Lourenco321 1 year ago
People think they can control their thoughts. What they don't realize is that those thoughts aren't there's. The body isn't you, the thoughts aren't you, the senses aren't you.
The ego's whole trick is to identify you (Witness) with content.
And it actually goes even deeper than that... waaay deeper. Read Nisargadatta, David R. Hawkins, Michael Langford.

Exccentrous1 1 year ago 2
this way your decisions are made by a conscious model of yourself and not from you really. You take everything to your conscious and your unconscious is almost lost. Then you are feeling you are not existing. The good thing is that you are always existing, you just have to be attached to that and not your ex-self.Anyhow, you are trying to remember your ex-self by words and words cannot describe fully a human. So you are really attached to something different than you, that is not even existing
angalagon 1 year ago
ego more or less is the attachment to a previous "good" situation like imprisoning. You have to imagine what yourself would do in that past situation when "yourself" was thinking correct to decide what reality is now. This ex-self is supposed to be the ego. Like trying to not change yourself from what you felt you are in a good period. The point is, that only if you are open to changes you will stay the same. There are millions of ways to describe ego but finally the feeling of it is one.

but i want someone 2 prove me wrong cos i wanna learn...im not arrogant :L...tnx
gavinlawlor93 1 year ago
@gavinlawlor93 how many people do you know who are in total control of their mind? when you get upset, angry or jelous, do you always stay cold and think carefully what are you going to say or do next? Many people dont, and you cant blame them for that - you simply cannot analyze your thoughts every second of every day. But i think the main problem is that they are simply not aware of their ego.

@gavinlawlor93 - Gavin, the ego is the incessant chatter of your mind that simultaneous thinks that it's a distinct and separate entity but at the same time is extremely paranoid that it doesn't exist. Very few people even have the mental awareness to know that that they are not their thoughts.

King Gautama's(Buddha) basic message was that all things out there are your ego
securing itself. And that the only path to liberation is the ego's destruction.
hotspur666 1 year ago
@gavinlawlor93, please listen.
LOKMETADASANTUNATWAI 1 year ago
There is so much beyond our minds. Don't allow the ego to influence your actions towards those who have succumbed to it. It will be difficult when the time comes; to think about what you feel, to think about what you should say, and why you look back at your past in resentment. This is exactly what Mr. Green learns, his fears, his actions, his struggle to go where he doesn't want to go. His fight with his internal enemy leads to his liberation.
LOKMETADASANTUNATWAI 1 year ago
And I completely agree with Dibuxxxx: I thoroughly hope I reach out to those who feel like their lives are incomplete, or that there is something you are missing at this very moment, whether it is attainable or not, to read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. If you do find yourself with the book, please read it when you have the day to yourself.
My mum gave the book to me months ago, and I criticized its title, put it aside to forget. But then I saw Revolver again, it led me somewhere amazing.
LOKMETADASANTUNATWAI 1 year ago
@gavinlawlor93 Well for starters, look at Hitler, Bernie Maddof, Richard Nixon, any one that feels a gun is his only defense in a paranoid world. People that see everyone as an enemy are extremely guided by their ego. People that will rip you off at a used car lot, this can go just about anywhere, even church leaders JIMI SWAGGART?. Just realize the more materialistic a person the more the ego is in charge. I-ME-MINE and those that are ruthless about how they gather wealth?? LOOK OUT!!
stcrzyaatyrs 1 year ago
@gavinlawlor93-I would look into the teachings of Zen or Buddha (not the religious aspect) for the reference to ego here. "Ego" is a Latin word for "the I". We're not talking about the "ego" word used to translate Freud's work. This ego is the false "I" that forms in childhood. The voice in our head that considers itself separate from everything and yet it's possessions are part of it (people, cars, knowledge). It will do anything to gain approval, anything. But, it is false, just mental concept
erolfox 1 year ago
@gavinlawlor93 who is in control ? Everyone (even yogis) says 'I' am in control of my mind. Who this 'I' do you think is? :)
As long as we don't investigate this 'I'-thought/feeling, so long we will not know our true Nature.

As bad as the ego is, you can never _get rid of it_ ....the real goal is to lose your sense of identity with it. Ego will always be there - it's your sense of identity with it that causes much of the problem.
Flatline89 1 year ago 3
I had the worst trip once on mushrooms and after the trip I felt as if I had no ego everything was neutral and in that moment you see people how they are and even if there are "bad' people you don't see them as such you just see these people like they are in a strugle. Its a weird feeling that I have lost after that morning, but it was beautifull. XTC in my opinion also puts your ego away which makes you understand people which in turn makes you live them.
