LOL I feel the SAME way. Luckily, my place of employment has adopted a new lean and casual dress code (jeans, sandals etc) anything goes and I feel much more confident. Interviews are rough, but I just pull the hair up in a bun and twist the ends town and pin up. People just aren't used the cotton-like beauty that is our hair!
I feel that same way where I work. For me, it's because I'm the only one here that has my hair in it's natural form. So it's a culture shock for everyone else, but I'm learning not to feel so insecure about it. I'm wearing a suit right now! lol
Your video topic reminds me of a song I hear on glamizini's channel, "I gotta be me, me is who the Lord has called me to be". Thanks for the video, I think a lot of us can relate :) Oh and if you want to hear the song, I believe the singer is named Kevin Shields. Blessings and have a wonderful day being you!!
Ugh! YES I have felt that way, but when my hair doesn't go with my outfit, or is just not fit for a formal event or an event that requires me to dress up, I just gel my hair back and put on a ponytail. Or find some straight wigs. They work nicely. I'm about to do that because I don't know what else I should do to my hair for tomorrow. Don't do this too often because it's terrible for your hairline after a week of doing this. Or you could gel the top of your hair back and create a bun..
I agree when I am at work I feel one way and when I am home I feel different. I feel more free at home and with my weekend clothes. I am glad I am not the only person that feels this way.
you can do that if you want your ends even but cutting your hair will not make your hair grow faster. it will take longer for you to grow your hair the length you want it.
I thought it was true but then left my hair alone for a year and my hair is now down to my bra
For all african american women ATTENTION: I had accidentally stumbled on this product, but before I tell you more...let me say that it will give Apoghee, pantene, dark &lovely, pink lotion etc. a run for their money. Try "Avalon hand and body lotion." There is a key ingredient called beta glucen that protects the skin/hair shaft by providing a second coating. I highly recommend using this lotion on your hair. It's none greasy and after straightning gives it A SILK POLISH FEELING.
My thoughts on it - for years up until VERY recently, we (black women) were encouraged to think that to be professional we had to relax and slick or hide and cover our hair so as to be as near to the "norm" (??) as poss. But now, we are finding our natural style and there are not that many corporate/professional women in the public eye that rock natural hair and styles. Most natural women are in the creative jobs and most professional or high profile black women relax or weave.
I LOVE YOUR BIG HAIR!!!!!.....and I totally agree with you!! I find if I have to wear more corporate attire I make sure my curls are bit more controlled yet if im wearing my everyday clothes the bigger my hair the better!!!....
They call the treatment a "silkener" at Miss Jessie's salons and there's a side note on their website that says that the girls in they're demo videos have silkeners. It's like a light texterizer. If you make products for NATURAL hair, why do your models need texturizers? It just doesn't sit right with me at all.
Yeah, there's certain ways I feel that I have to style my hair when I'm in corporate attire because I feel that my hair only looks right with those clothes in certain styles. The styles are okay, but they're not very fun and I like my hair to be big, poofy, curly and fun. So yeah, I totally understand what you mean. It just doesn't feel quite right.
P.S. I have that comb too, I LOVE it! I only use it in the shower so it's really cool that it has that hook so I can leave it in the shower.
I have this problem because I'm job hunting. Sometimes I feel like it is just easier to throw on a wig or flat iron my hair. I love my hair in all states but sometimes I feel like twist outs are viewed as dare I say inappropriate work hair. At least while trying to get the job.
I don't think so but there are some environments where certain styles are not as welcomed. Corporate offices I guess are just used to straighter, flatter , hair. I've had a co worker tell me not to wear my hair so big because they'll ask the agency for a different temp. After that I got my hair braided and a few people told me it was "better"! It's one thing to do what u want when you have the job, but when you are looking u have to consider the place.
That's a bunch of bull crap! I'm sorry, but that is obviously discrimination. Maybe not on a racial level, but it is discrimination. You can't tell someone to wear their hair "less big" What the hell is that? And I would never change the style of my NATURAL hair just to please a work place. You've got to be kidding me!
I guess I understand what you mean by that, but me personally, its different. I would rather get replaced then to have to change a part of me just to please someone else. But again, I understand what your trying to say.
thats why i dont want a corporate job. im a makeup artist and a fashion student right now. I'd feel so lost if i couldnt express myself through my style, lol.
I just dont thin carols daughter is good for natural hair, which is obvioulsy disappointing. I dont like miss jessies pucts too well either. they make my hair harder to comb, almsot makes it stick together
I'm so anti Miss Jessies. All the girls they use on their demo videos have something like a texturizer, but they try to market products to naturals. What can they really tell me about natural hair if they only use models with texturizers?
I actually like when I rock my lil curly fro and my corporate attire. I usually try to wear a cute/quirky blouse to offset the drab pin stripe suit...I've gotten more compliments when i wear my hair out and suit than when i wear the wigs or wear my hair down.
Love ur hair in this vid..Im just like aaaaahh wow !!....anyway yes I feel u on the suit/ afro combo ..i also feel that way when I go to church b/c my church is consrvative Im like OMG get me out of these clothes so I can be set freee..lol
It was your environment because your hair looks perfect on this video. Your stlye is everything us natural ladies want, it's not dry looking, not much shrinkage or frizzy, bouncy, soft (it looks that way) etc. Glad you came to realize it looked good.
i hope my braid out works tommorow morning. 3 days ago, i had the cutest twist out, i think my hair type is a 4a (defined curls at the root but elongated curls towards the ends). N E way, I added carols daughter black vanilla leave in conditoner carol's daughter hair milk and it was pretty dry. To add to it, my hair got tangled pretty bad. I just washed my hair and conditioned the braids with pure shea butter melted and grape seed oil.
Yeah, Carols daughter hair milk dries my hair out and black vanilla leave in conditioner doesn't do it for my hair either. It does smell good, but that s it. I LOVE pure avocado hair oil on my hair it is unbelievable. i buy it at random health food stores
I'm not corporate but I am military. Last week I tried out the twist out for the first time ever.I wore my hair like that to work My boss was like "...uh no!!" Everyone else was feeling it but he was saying that it was disheveled not neat and not professional. and I was offended. In the military the only thing that makes you feel like a female is your hair! so anyway I know where you're coming from in a way... maybe not a bad hair day exactly but when clothes/hair does not match up well!
that is so upsetting. but PRETTYPROBLEM16 the military is a completely different world from civilian life. they have strict rules to live by and no one is exempt from the rules. No woman is allowed to wear their hair down while working/on duty. Unless they say "your black/ethnic hair is unruly" then they can say whatever they want unlike civilian work places where they really can't tell you how you can wear your hair because it is considered discrimination.
I know exactly what you mean. When I need to "corporatize", I'll pull my hair back with a scarf, and throw on my sexy sophisticated black framed glasses or something like it helps me not to feel so "corky". Also I love love love Blended Beauty Products. I am using 5 products from that line and I am in love with my hair! You should check out there site if you already haven't~
Ahhh I just don't like suits, but I just do my own style it tends to work out better than trying to wear something you don't really like that much lol :)
thank you! But you know, I get breakouts too unfortunately, I use bare minerals though so it has actually helped my skin because it's very light but I definitely get mild acne, I just try not to obsess about it :)
when you shop for your hair products do you go to the beauty supply or like walmart? i recently decided since watching your vids that i want to start going natural, but i have no clue where to get the products you use. can you help me out?
I support black owned beauty supplies or health food stores when it comes to purchasing natural hair products. I can find certain things at Walgreens like the BioInfusion detangling conditioner or get Giovanni products from CVS or Target but it depends on what I need. I'm hittin up the African spot for my shea butter today :)
I love suits. Well tailored that work with my body, however, I will not tame my hair to conform to the 'corporate image'. My mane stays wild. If you do not like it kindly look the other way. Negative personal comments will NOT be tolerated. I imagine that you would look beautiful in a suit also. Shop around some more. Dont give up. A girl with looks like you can look lovely in anything.
i share your feelings. it pains me to dress "professionally" i almost feel like i have to tame my hair...(though i love my curls too much for all that)
If you do a twist out and then moisturize the next day does it make your curls go away? My ends are relaxed so if I do a braid out or anything I have to be careful with the moisturizer. Is it different with all natural hair?
I think this was a twist out, my hair's more compacted when it's a braid out..but you made me think of a cool idea..I'm gonna start putting the name of the style I'm wearing in the description box. =)
I totally agree with you! Sometimes the clothes and atmosphere aren't very accepting or accomodating for styles that break the mold. I have just learned to modify my style in those situations while still being me. I think that's the only way we can survive.
we have similar hair textures and it works pretty well for me and is all natural i believe. also garnier curl and shin and sleek and shine work well too altho not all natural.
i will definitely be checking that out, I don't think they have it at the health food store with the other Giovanni products but I'm sure I can find it =) thanks for suggesting that!
Hey Autumn! great twist out! I work in an environment where the dress code is to dress biz casual at LEAST and business attire on occasion because I come into contact with members frequently. I actually dig the professional look but tend to put a spin on it to fit my style a bit more. My hair isn't as long or BIG as yours yet so I tend to enjoy shrunken and stretched fros for work. I usually rock thrifted tops, dresses and cardigans with a belt and mix match colors to match my hair.
I love this line. It works wonders. And it makes it feel so soft!!! I wish more and more natural women would try it because its a miracle for our hair! A little expensive...but its worth it!!
LOL I feel the SAME way. Luckily, my place of employment has adopted a new lean and casual dress code (jeans, sandals etc) anything goes and I feel much more confident.
