@spectres0024 yeah wehn it first came out in 69 our basketball team won it's first district championship and it didn't take long for it to start,i played forward on the team and could hear the fans crankin it up about two min. before the horn...been a long time but i remember it like it was a couple yrs. ago, damn time flys
I'm pretty sure this was a B side song, recorded as a joke. The band figured they'd make a song so silly that no disc jockey would ever play it on the radio. The result was this song. And boy did it get played !
@spiderdragon1969 I heard that this was recorded by session musicians in late 67/early68 and it was not a hit and then someone started playing it like crazy on a station somewhere in 69,and it was a smash (as they said then), the original line up had disbanded so more session men came in to do tv.So the original line up could have been black.
@TZEITEL10 you heard wrong spider....the group, steam did not want ot record the song, but they needed it to complete the album they were working on....and the song went on to be the only hit the group ever had....no studio musicians involved
@dabthe1st Well now thats straightened out. Thanks for that.I have never heard their other stuff, they look like they would be more Canned Heat than the pop act that this song suggests.
Count me as surprised as everyone else. I had no idea the singer was male and white. It's hilarious too, because the lyrics clearly imply the gender of the singer. LMAO!
Hi so you think it should be a girl singing the song? Why? I think it should be a male, since the lyrics imply that it's a guy wanting his girl to ditch another guy. That's what I always thought anyway.
@MrDimwitted maybe it's me but I remember when this came out in the fall of 1969 and I always assumed it was a white group. The Belmonts (without Dion) also did a version of this.....
This group came to Denver to play at a club where I worked (The Draught House). I remember picking them up at the old Stapleton Airport in my dad's 1967 Cadillac convertible. Nice guys but we drove by the Denver Broncos practice facility and none of them knew who the Broncos were. Oh well, it was 1969.
I worked at KNAC Long Beach California in 1969 as a radio deejay on the night shift. We got a preview copy of this 45-rpm single in August, but the song didn't break nationally until October. I thought it has great production, even though it doesn't really sound like a rock group. A lot of people thought they were a black act like Sly Stone. That only added to the song's popularity. They got a TV gig on Don Kirschner's Rock Show later that year and the song rocketed up the charts by December.
Who is this other man claiming he is Gary DeCarlo and performing at beatexpo???? He is a tiny man, with blond hair and does not look like a DeCarlo. From all the research I have done, it is very obvious to me that this video has the REAL Gary.
This song was never intended to be released. It was recorded as a "throwaway" B side for a song by "The Chateaus", by the members of the Chateaus themselves--but they didn't want their name on the song because they thought it was garbage. Incidentally, when the promo record was released, with "Na Na Hey Hey" appearing on the B side, a DJ down south flipped the record over and played this song. Requests from listeners for the song to be played poured in...and the rest is history.
there were and probably always will be session bands that get lucky ,this version is head and shoulders above the other session band that got (very very) lucky with this song ,,,,,,,,,,,,,banannarama ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,boo
@twoPLAYS007 It's not that simple. There really wasn't a Steam. The songwriters and record company brought a group of session musicians together to fill the role and they toured.
RIP Paul Leka. 10/23/11. What a joy it was to hear this playing (and the crowd singing) when George W. Bush was getting into the helicopter to leave DC after O's inauguration.
Great Song!!! My grandson, who is 6, started sing this and it brought back so many memories... Jr. High!! Really felling good now.... just what I needed!!!
some of you will be glad to know or apppalled that steam or the "new steam" plays in little tiny bars under the name doing this song in Daytona beach florida with none of the original members...did they buy the name? dont know but...everyone in Daytona is either famous or has been associated with some one famous....wow
@Sup3rwood why is everyone so obsessed w/ how the lip syncing is nowadays???? this is from the days when ppl cared how music SOUNDED, not how it LOOKED. thats why music will never be as good as in the days of this song. nothing coming out today will be remembered in 20 yrs. it wont even be remembered next year, let alone 40 yrs.
without question one of the catchiest pop hits in music history. and I'm proud that I have the original album! Hope it's a collector's item by now in 2011.
I went to high school wirh the drummer, Ray Corea (sp) my sister went out with a member Bill Stear (sp) (not sure he's in video maybe on bongos?) They had a one hit wonder, plus an album, I don't think any of them made much on their hit. I think the lead singer was brought in on the deal.Hard t say, It was a long time ago.
read this!!! coppy and paist it all on all of the videos you go to!
In the fight to keep rock alive and kicking there is a movement on youtube going arround, watch all of your normal classic rock videos and leave a comment on it and like it, watch them over and over and over to get the videos kicked up higher on the most played lists to get the younger generations interested in the classics and to get music like this to get it popular again and start to come out again in the upcomming years!-DW
@Roodosutaa The lead singer in the video wasn't the original singer of this famous song, although the singer you see here is the lead singer of Steam. I had the album in 1969, and remember seeing the original singer's photograph on the back of the album (With a thank you from the band) for doing this one song for Steam as a guest singer.
How about it!? Me too. This song always reminds me of my hometown Chicago. Especially the White Sox, even though I'm a cubs fan, I don't care, it's an awesome song and fits the White Sox well!
@tommieturner23 wow, a little over a month ago we watched this video and now I read the songwriter has died. I'm probably younger than you, born in '79 and remember my uncle Larry taking me to Sox games as a kid at Comiskey, and I loved the fireworks. I should know this but did Nancy ever play organ for the Blackhawks too? I read the comments left by fans of the Red Sox and the Yankees (yuk) claiming this song but they have no idea this is a Chicago baseball song and always will be. Nice try.
@nhlninetyfour Don't be naive. This is not a "Chicago baseball song." The White Sox were simply the first organization to play the song when a starting pitcher from the opposing team was knocked from the game. As the pitcher walked from the mound toward the dugout, the song was cued and the crowd sang along with the chorus, "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey: goodbye!."
@nhlninetyfour OMG!!!! I totally forgot about that Nananannana hey hey hey goodbye thingy in the ball games! You made me LOL just now! I so remember that and the still on going North vs South teams! I too miss home...I am from NW burbs so grew up a Cubs fan for life ;) I live in Angels/Padres turf but for me? I still am homesick for Wrigley Field Haha Thanks for your post! xD
@duncanrs apparently there actually is no band "Steam", this song was just a creation performed by a generic "studio band" which happened to become super successful. My guess is that these guys are A) THAT studio band, or B) a bunch of guys paid to act like a band.
Our basketball team meeded to have this as a rally song!...
