I'm pretty sure this was a B side song, recorded as a joke. The band figured they'd make a song so silly that no disc jockey would ever play it on the radio. The result was this song. And boy did it get played !

@spiderdragon1969 I heard that this was recorded by session musicians in late 67/early68 and it was not a hit and then someone started playing it like crazy on a station somewhere in 69,and it was a smash (as they said then), the original line up had disbanded so more session men came in to do tv.So the original line up could have been black.

This group came to Denver to play at a club where I worked (The Draught House). I remember picking them up at the old Stapleton Airport in my dad's 1967 Cadillac convertible. Nice guys but we drove by the Denver Broncos practice facility and none of them knew who the Broncos were. Oh well, it was 1969.

I worked at KNAC Long Beach California in 1969 as a radio deejay on the night shift. We got a preview copy of this 45-rpm single in August, but the song didn't break nationally until October. I thought it has great production, even though it doesn't really sound like a rock group. A lot of people thought they were a black act like Sly Stone. That only added to the song's popularity. They got a TV gig on Don Kirschner's Rock Show later that year and the song rocketed up the charts by December.

This song was never intended to be released. It was recorded as a "throwaway" B side for a song by "The Chateaus", by the members of the Chateaus themselves--but they didn't want their name on the song because they thought it was garbage. Incidentally, when the promo record was released, with "Na Na Hey Hey" appearing on the B side, a DJ down south flipped the record over and played this song. Requests from listeners for the song to be played poured in...and the rest is history.

I went to high school wirh the drummer, Ray Corea (sp) my sister went out with a member Bill Stear (sp) (not sure he's in video maybe on bongos?) They had a one hit wonder,plus an album, I don't think any of them made much on their hit. I think the lead singer was brought in on the deal.Hard t say, It was a long time ago.

I had the album in 1969, and remember seeing the original singer's photograph on the back of the album (With a thank you from the band) for doing this one song for Steam as a guest singer.

I'm probably younger than you, born in '79 and remember my uncle Larry taking me to Sox games as a kid at Comiskey, and I loved the fireworks. I should know this but did Nancy ever play organ for the Blackhawks too? I read the comments left by fans of the Red Sox and the Yankees (yuk) claiming this song but they have no idea this is a Chicago baseball song and always will be. Nice try.

@nhlninetyfour Don't be naive. This is not a "Chicago baseball song." The White Sox were simply the first organization to play the song when a starting pitcher from the opposing team was knocked from the game. As the pitcher walked from the mound toward the dugout, the song was cued and the crowd sang along with the chorus, "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey: goodbye!."

@duncanrs apparently there actually is no band "Steam", this song was just a creation performed by a generic "studio band" which happened to become super successful. My guess is that these guys are A) THAT studio band, or B) a bunch of guys paid to act like a band.
