@promofilmca that is true what you said. But there are still two little pins left to locate it, and i used some silicone to glue it in place. It sticks well, and is flexible to move with the weather and outdoor elements.
The full strip gives you the best possible start for any paint job. Spraying over old paint is ok if you just wanna tart up an old dog, but when you want a bike thats got to be in the best condition right from the start, it's the only way, for us anyways.
Many people can't imagine stripping a bike. "Too much hard work"
Come on guys!! This took me one night, about 2 hours. With the right tools, it's easy.
The original paint on this bike was looking in good shape, some would just paint over it, but as i stripped this one, there was a small chip, and there was rust running right under the paint for a good 4 inches. Rust always comes to the surface, so for a bike like this, for a customer, it's really worth the extra bit of time.
@Voraciousz ha yeah, i use wire brushes, paint stripper, and blunt objects to get into those nooks. USE EYE PROTECTION THOUGH, wire brushes flick the stripper into your eyes, which melts them, and then it gets into your brain and its all bad really.
I filed off the rivets from inside the headtube, once i'd removed the headset cups! Then i stripped the old paint off with nitromors. I brushed it with a soft brass brush (for detailing alloy wheels) to get right into the embossed bits. Then i sprayed the whole damn ting with the blue paint. Just one good coat. Let it set for about a day. Then, with some 600 grit on a FLAT block, carefully sand over the whole badge. It will remove all the high spots and leave paint in the low spots. The lacquer!
I’ve stripped and resprayed a number of bike frames now (all roadies).
My stages go like this; strip bike to bare frame, sandblast/prime, undercoat, guidecoat, sand – DA and handsand with 400 w/d, prepsol, base/colourcoat, apply decals, 4 coats two pot of clearcoat.
I don’t cut and polish after they’re done – they look fine.
I topcoat/clea 1/2 the frame at a time to make it easier
aha my paint,i just kinda ruffed up the paint so the primer would stick,do you really need to paint strip it like this for the paint to be durable, even when you have primer?
What a wonderful paint job. I am painting my frame tomorrow in the exact same color. I can't wait to see the result. I was wondering, did you finish the paint job with some coats of clear varnish? And also, what is the song called?
I've painted bikes without doing a full strip (just a basic strip with a ton of primer) and it looks great. I can't imagine stripping it all the way down to the metal!! god thats time-consuming
It's an Izumi track chain in 1/8. It's a real nice bit of kit. If you run brakeless, get a decent chain. They are about £30, but you need the strength as this is your brake essentially!
I don't tend to do much sanding as such. I just strip the paint using a good paint stripper like nitromors, then use wire wool to take away any stubborn paint. You can sand it though if you want too. I wouldn't use normal sandpaper, but more like a wet and dry aluminium oxide paper. It's better for metal and leaves a nicer finish. Start at 240 on bare metal and see how you get on. You really only sand generally so the paint has something to 'key' or stick too. Hope this helps
Nice one, you'll need a quality paint stripper. I like to use NOTROMORS. It is pretty strong. Follow the instructions on the can, and WEAR EYE PROTECTION< THIS STUFF WILL BLIND YOU.
Using a wire brush and a small alloy wheel detailing brush helps to get the hard to reach areas. Also a spark plug brush is ideal, especially around the lugs and bottom bracket. Good luck, if you have any questions dont be afraid to mail us
I would leave the primer for at least 7 days. It depends on what the climate is like where you are. If it's warm and not raining all the time, 7 days should be fine. The original riparato bike (green) took longer in the depths of winter. I left that for two weeks. Test it with your thumbnail. If it leaves a depression easily or feels rubbery, leave it a few more days. If it feels hard, try cutting back with 600 or 800. If it sands nice, hit it with color!
Nice, I've done this with no experience at all... And I think Did quite well...
This vid has helped a ton!!!
My mom sells stanley, so i can use some of her wire scrubbers to strip all of the paint.... How long should i let the primer dry before i do the color coats??
Hi hesheme18. The raleigh badge was stripped of original paint, sprayed baby blue to match the frame. Using 600grit wet'n'dry on a flat block, you can carefully sand the badge. The paint on the high areas, like the border and the bird, gets sanded away. The paint which is sat in the low areas is untouched. Make sure it is totally dry before sanding back, or the dust will stick to the paint. Then i just sprayed lacquer on coat after coat, until it was all the same level (about 6 heavy coats) Paul
drinfernogh, i know what you mean, it can be tricky. In most automotive or hardware stores, you can buy small wire brushes for cleaning. Stanley actually make a great set of three, with plastic handles. Get some nitromors in the nooks and crannies, using a brush, leave for about 3 mins, and start to scrub. It should come away and you can get right in there with the wire brush. Some people use a toothbrush, but they're a little flimsy. WEAR EYE PROTECTION. IT WILL FLICK IN YOUR EYES!
Really depends on how much you put on and how heavy you apply it.
Cant say ive ever weighed a bike before and after. I rode the original 'riparato' bike in bare mental and then in 10 good coats of paint, and is was fast as a hairy goat both times, really didnt notice it!!!!
hi there, how do you gloss over it ?

@riparato What are the "right tools"? Other then sand paper... I can't begin to consider how you got the small nooks paintless O_o
