  • @btsseeker Seconded. Shug, you're hilarious.

  • just made some from wool jumper arms they work well ty for idea

  • @CarpingTenchLover Arm jumpers ....that I like!

  • I have some rain mitts made of E-vent from Mountain Laurel Designs. 1.2 ounces and half the price of the cuben fiber ones, which are even lighter. I use them with my Marmot wristies and my Teramarr glove liners. But now I need to get some fleece gloves to replace my heavy ragg wool ones.

  • @NoCombustionSounds like a right good system. I got rags too but they stay out by the wood-pile.

  • Good Stuff. Like to keep my cookie snatchers warm and ussable too. Fleece works well for use in the Humid south; but down on the hands, not so much. Been a follower of Thinsolate and goretex most years. I've never used the wristlets. Gonna have to give that one a go.

  • @TrailH4x Glove on.....

  • Very informative, thanks Shug.

  • @eschwebach My pleasure my quest.

  • what do you think of silk, do you ever use it?

  • @khakipearls Wering some silk now on legs...thin and pretty warm. Never tried on my hands. It is warmish.

  • Excellent. You know what they say about a man with large hands...Large gloves. High five or umm fifteen, in this case. Merry Christmas Shug...Dash

  • @mrriprock2 Right back atcha!

  • Love it Shug, great system mate, the Layer systems work on all cold weather gear,oh and thanks for the laugh bud.. :o)

  • @redeyesinthedark A cheery thanks.

  • Thanks Shug, love your vids always. Very informative, helpful, and entertaining!!!

  • @btsseeker Mighty fine...and thanks

  • Glovely

  • @matthewmartin1970 G'lecome!

  • funny as heck...my system is very similar....great minds..you know,lol.

  • @sousaville Whoooo Buddy!

  • Already using a similar system, buy not got wrist warmers yet, yet another project, thanks (I think)

  • @MrHatManS Some folks use old socks....just cut them to fit.

  • @shugemery hmm, as long as they are washed first

  • Thanks for this vid. Enjoy seeing your approach. I agree, the wristies and fingerless combo covers a surprising amount of conditions!

  • Another useful vid. After seeing one of your earlier vids where you mentioned your wrist warmers, I made a pair for myself and for my wife. We love 'em. They really do make a difference...especially when we're out building igloos on cold, cold days.

    -Martin

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • @Cphobes My pleasure ....warm hands to all!

  • are those black rock gloves waterproof?

  • @11jbguy They are not....he sells a cuben fiber over-mitt for them for that reason. They sure are warm though!

  • Did you ever retrieve those balls from underneath your couch for me? :)

    Have a Merry Christmas, bro.

  • @ATF6281914 My snake swallowed them...again. Happy Merry .

  • Dude! You already got a lid from Tinny for your pot!

  • @teche70 I sure did...wondering if anyone would notice it!

  • Darn it Shug, get out of my head! Every time I start pondering some aspect of my new winter camping hobby, you immediately produce a video on precisely that subject.

Sleeping bags as a top quilt, Check. What gloves to use for extreme cold, check. About half a dozen different little questions in the winter camping videos the last few weeks.

Thanks for helping me get ready! I'll be hanging Friday night in the low 20s to test things out.

  • @hikerfrost Remeber to chow down and have a hot drink like cocoa before sleep and that will really help with warmth whilst slumbering.

  • What brand of electronic scale r u using

  • @mudtoa an Escali.

  • merry christmas to you too SHUG.......

  • Merry Christmas Shug !!!!!

  • @OutdoorChautauqua And to you and yours!

  • that black rock gear, so wonderful yet so expensive! Are those down gloves waterproof?? I am starting to get obsessed with down, expensive habit.

Also I like the LNT vid idea. always a bummer to find trash at a beautiful place, and even more of a bummer to be the person that leaves it!

  • @alexn159 Not waterproof at all those down mitts...he sell a cuben fiber over-mitt for them to keep them dry. Very high tech and spendy!

I feel all my trip reports are LNT...low-impact...no trash...pick up the trash of others...often no fire....don't pee or poop in creeks and rivers)))haaa

  • Another great video Shug. I was just evaulating my current glove system so this info will be very useful. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  • @jdmredteg Doesn't have to cost a lot....or else it can if you want. It is a glove win/win.

  • That was interesting, Shug. I never put that much thought into gloves. Usually I wear those wool military gloves down to zero degrees or a cheap pair of walmart gloves when it's colder or we're snowmobiling. Must be hyper-arctic genetics.

  • @hunt458 If that is keeping you good and warm out on the machine then yes...you are hyper-artic. Are you in Minnesota?

As a backpacker...I go with my system as I never liked those big long gloves...could never get them in my pockets.

    Carry forth...

  • Shug, I am a MCC (Minnesota Conservation Corps.) Worker and i was wondering what do you do to be a "leave no trace" person. I would really like to see a video ! thanks Nathan Helland

  • @NUHS23 I just leave no trace!...never leave trash....very seldom a fire unless there is a pit or ring....careful where I step....bury poop when no latrines. Use candle and alcohol stove...quiet gear. Most times you never know or knew I was there. Video on LNT....I'll take it up with myself.

  • @shugemery That is awsome ! We should get together sometime and talk nature and smoke a cigar ! Much Love man... Love the Vids... God bless you !

  • Make wrist warmers easy out of 100% wool socks. If they aren't already abused and shrunk and felted wash them in lots of hot sudsy water and scrub that suds through well. Then dunk in icy cold water to shrink and rinse. Dry. Now that they are felted you can cut them and they won't ravel. Cut off heel with two cuts at 90% angles and cut off toe just above that leaving a section to fit between thumb and hand. If not 100% wool you must do a double line of stitches along the cut line and cut between

  • @RebLin51 Before cutting make sure every thread of yarn has been caught by a thread of sewing. Whip stitch edges. Treat your knitted wool gloves the same way before you cut the fingers off and you will not have raveled edges either.

  • @RebLin51 Oh yeah ....made some.sometimes made my arms itch so I gave them to my friends...they'll take anything.

Good instructions you gave there...thankee reb gal

  • I was going to do a video on my winter glove system, but now I don't need to. You covered it very well brother. ho ho ho & all secure

  • @CampfireTalk Tenn Gloves may differ from Minn Gloves..... Southern Style!

  • Nice video. I'm a wool man myself and once wool socks get "holy" they make great wrist/forearm warmers. I use a few layers too and fingerless wool gloves are my favorite.

  • @Barbarossa4U Very true.....made a few "Wooly-Wristies" for a couple of buddies who were eye-balling and coveting my warm wrists))))

  • very thurough indeed... i should make a glove video... tried making mittens before but its hard to get the thumb right.

  • @FixedByDoc I made some....thumb was the hardest for sure.

  • Another great production! Evan does has great stuff, good layering system Shug. :-)

  • @007vauxhall I have a few of his things and they are Gear-Art!

  • Morning biscuits with butter and honey + Shug on the Tube = a great start......AGIS7

  • @ScoutsNOA I gotta go see if we have any Grands stashed in the fridge!!!!

  • What, no muff? Do you keep all your gloves in a large alice pack so you can get to them in a hurry and they won't get mixed up with the rest of your gear. Lol.

  • @thenrylee I goota muff but I prefer others don't see it. I had a girlfriend named Alice Pack....hottie.

  • nice one buddy

  • @stonybrokebushcraf I thankee Feller.

  • Excellent info, think I might make me some of those rain mitts from and old Dru-Duks poncho sometime.

  • @aboyd45 Easy enough and will work. I made some but did not show them in the video as folks would ask if I sell them or want to see how I make them and sewing videos are not my forte. Too much swearing)))

  • Great winter system there buddy, I have very similar types of gloves bar the old down mitts i have some great Primaloft insulation mitts.

That was a great tip with the wrist warmers lets hope people catch on rather than brushing it off. Just as important as a neck warmer!!

  • @wall2rockclimber To true. I find warm wrists warms me incredibly.

  • Is it possible to ride two unicycles at the same time? And if so could you please make a video?

  • @Extesd Ride one push another. Short video.

  • @shugemery Hey thats thinkin! Thanks for making the fun videos :D

  • Excellent video great information and advice on how to keep those all important hands warm. Keeping my feet warm has always been a problem for me. How about doing a video on your syetem for keeping feet warm and toasty on the trail and in camp.

  • @MrPoppabear255 So I shall....so shall it be.

  • When you were talking about the temps.

Are these degrees below your freezing point of 32F ???.....

The system used in the States really confuses the WooBuddy outta me.

Metric is so much easier...freezing point is Zero. So when someone says its 12 degrees below outside...I know its -12C

Every time I see or hear american winter weather reports....I shake my head to get the moths out....lol

Oh...and dont get me started on your measuring system...

(Three Fourteenths of and Inch..etc etc)

    Rob.

  • @RDPproject Your's confuses me as well. I am a bad mather any-hoo.

  • Thank you for these tips ...layering I get it > :) Whoo Bhuddy

  • @vek0zzzz Layer-Power.

  • Good one Shug I am surprised you didn't show your juggling tourche hand warmers again :-)

  • @medicjimr I got fire balls.

  • @shugemery lol . But back to video That is sad the opossum gloves wear bad I have heard that sort of glad I skipped on buying a pair

  • @medicjimr They do but I love the feel and warmth

  • Great info Shug. Thanks Ye.

  • @spence0324 Y'elcome>>>

  • Is there anyone living in Canada or ontario Canada. I dont know of any place to winter camp. Sigh.john

  • I cant find anywhere I can winter camp here in southern ontario. At the end of winter im pretty much a loony tune not being able to go into the forest for so long. john

  • @mrfadedjeans There has to be some woods to stealth off in.....is there not?

  • good info bro. keep up yur magic

  • @wonderingson Sha-Zammmm

  • Great video.. your possum gloves seem to be worn where you hold your trekking poles.

Thanks for the great and informative video =D

  • @markshmily They are fragile a bit but super warm. I am hard on gear))))

  • Nice one, Shug.

Have you considered longsleeves with thumbloops instead of wrist warmers? I find they work great, and allow me to carry on piece less while keeping the same functionality.

  • @Habichtshorst A couple of my shirts do that but in an all day situation I prefer the wrist warmers. No shoulder tug.

  • PossumDown is highly susceptible to fire. That said I use the PossumDown wrist warmers, and than the PossumDown Gloves (with full fingers) than over those I put on the Black Rock Gear Undermitt, than I use the Black Rock Gear Overmitt - their new WP/B Cuben Fiber overmitts.

  • @RedwoodOutdoors Believe me....I know the smell of burning possum!!!!

  • I love mittens in the cold weather. I used to wear a leather mitten with a wool liner and it worked great.. Thanks Shug for another well done video.

  • @wingman115 Gotta mitt up.

  • Another fine instructional video with that classic SHUGROW touch! LOVE ME A BREAD CAM ... you clever feller you!

  • @RallohE Bait-Cam.....hoping for a Turkey.

  • Thanks for the great info sir! Woooooooooooo buddy!

  • @jabp03 Whoooooo Thankee

  • Whoooo buddy hand show to see if you get cold hand.

  • @john48737 Hand-Some

  • I think one of the reasons I stay up so late is to watch the Shug videos when they come out.

  • @Mikums2 Night Owl....hooty-hoo! Thankee.
