Not only a great piece of music but intriguing lyrics. I always knew it had some deeper meaning..I had no idea until recently what it was about. Very Brave New World/1984-ish.
1. where in the heck are these guys from. 2. Why in the heck have I not heard of them. 3. How much did he bargain with Satan for to obtain those bass skills. 4. The Machine Stops is one of my favorite pieces of literature ever.
@justinianianian A1. London & the Isle of Wight. A2. How could you have not heard of Level 42 before ?. A3. No bargaining just sheer talent. A4. Good !. ;o))
@minx3a that explains it. I'm from the states, and my UK roomie knows some of their songs on bass. I still can't get over how awesome this is. are they still playing shows>?
I just Love Level 42. Must be nice for Mike to have Sean play those lead lines on the EWI so he's not so stressed out trying to cover everything. :-) Can't can't to see the next tour.
I know its not Phils 'signature hi hat pattern', but it is one he has used of a few songs, that Gary has picked up on, PG also used it on Hot Water Wembley dvd.... and why are people putting thumbs down to my previous comment - its a compliment!
Gary would naturally "pick up on it", as it's a reasonably faithful cover of an old song. Maybe some prefer it when he puts just as much of his own input into old songs. Who knows?
Oh I know Gary would pick up on it, he ones of the best musicians around. I think he puts his input into all of the songs. I'm pretty positive that MK wouldn't have wanted a PG clone, which is one the reasons MK first thought of using Gary back in 85... The only drummer MK has used that played pretty much what was on the record was the guy he used around 98ish whose name escapes me! Phil, Gary and Gavin were all individual musicians and put their input into each song - I think!! :O)
you made me do my homework damn you!! Gavin was on the 94 tour and it was Trevor Smith on the 98/99 tour before Gary took over, I couldn't remember Trevor's name!! he's another local to the IOW, which was apparently how MK knew of him, he was a good drummer, but very much a Phil Gould clone, without the flair of PG, but still very tight!
Thanks for the upload! Mark's lookin' a little thick there (Perils of getting older I guess). Love the bass he's playing and Its always good to see Mike Lindup back in the fold.

It's not Phil's - not anyone's so to speak. It's just a very common beat for a tune of this type that Phil applied on the original.
