  • I bought this light a couples months ago I was under the impression in general mode it would remember what leval your at but mine always jumps to. S.o.s if increase the bright ness any input on legal changing would be great

  • Bought this light last month for taking the dogs out during winter. I was a maglite fan, but this light is superb. Use it every day for some task or other.

  • @kaos3124 Cutting proof gloves or is that supposed to be just a joke from you?

  • Why are you wearing gloves?

  • I just bought this light today, and I only have a normal light mode and an SOS mode. is there something wrong with that?

  • Yay if I make the tennis team my dad will buy me one

  • @brownbear696969 Awesome! Good luck making the team!

  • my 3rd click before the SOS looks just as bright as my turbo? is mine broken?? help me!!! Ahhhhhhhh

  • @DaBossk There is a thread on candle power forums talking about this issue, I will pm it to you right now.

  • Nice review man I want a ld20 really bad so I might be gettin one thanks

  • @dodgekicksass505 It's a great light, I wouldn't mind upgrading to the current version at some point but this one wont die one me! lol.

  • I bought this for my dad for a Christmas present, being he has a Maglight from what I presume is the 70's, and he's an auto mechanic and always working around the house, so it's definitely time for an upgrade. After seeing the video and doing a quick test of the one I bought, I feel confident that he will be ecstatic. Thanks for the review!

  • @dbwalter28 No problem at all! It's an awesome light and I carry mine and use it on a daily basis to this day. I'm sure it will serve him very well!

  • (cont) The bezel goes to left for Turbo, but that does turn the light on? Or you still gotta do the button in the back? I think the best way for the controls to be is this: On/Off at the back, adjust all modes with turning the bezel/ring (1,2,3,turbo, SOS, strobe). Instead it looks like the back is (1,2,3, off) and then the rings do something else.

  • @kenny582 The first press of the button turns the light on and it starts in low mode, each tap after that increases brightness then goes to sos mode. If you have the bezel turned to the left when you press the button the light comes on in turbo mode and the next tap does the strobe. So in normal mode its press 1 low, press 2 medium, press 3 high, press 4 sos. In turbo mode it's press 1 turbo, press 2 strobe. I hope that clears it up.

  • @hathcocked, interesting. Thank you! That was great. Dont know why they dont have all this on their website. Waiting for a customer rep to email me back and then I'll probably buy this and give myself a christmas present. Oops, one more which I already asked the rep: Can we change the focus (and therefore spread) by the stuff at the top? That would change it from narrow to wide focus. Or is it all fixed in one type of beam?

  • @kenny582 It's a fixed beam, you can't adjust the focus. It's a great light, I have carried it every day since I got it and it's never let me down. My buddy took one to Afghanistan and it worked fine and he still carries his now in civilian life.

  • @hathcocked, cool thanks a lot for all the info and helping me! Looks like a quality product for sure.

  • @kenny582 No problem at all, if you ever have any questions about something I own just let me know.

  • Background is in focus but not the flashlight. Anyway, how are the modes changes? I dont have to cycle through the button in the back do I? That would suck, pressing it 7 times every time I need to use it. You didnt show us how you changed the modes. 8/10.

  • @kenny582 I made this a year ago when I was first starting out on youtube, not to say my reviews have gotten any better though lol. You tap the rear switch for mode changes. There are 3 modes( low medium high) plus strobe and sos. The brightness modes are the first 3 taps. If you turn the bezel to the left that sets it into turbo mode. I tend to leave it on that setting most of the time. It does not however remember the last used brightness level. That's why I tend to use turbo.

  • @hathcocked, thanks. Argh, so we do have to cycle through the button each time. That means I'd have to press it a total of 4 times for each use (on 1, one 2, on 3, Off). Is that right? I thought they'd have that in the twisting bezel. Their website is lacking too. It doesnt show all this detail as to how exactly its operated. So lets say I wanna use it at the lowest setting. Argh this is frustrating. (cont)

  • best review of this light yet.

  • @simonsky8 I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching!

  • is there a clip that shows how u did those paracord ties, they look good

  • @binot Yes there is, just do a search for "chris reeves lanyard". There are a few good clips that show how to tie it, it's actually pretty easy. Thanks for watching.

  • Yeah but how does it test against a rechargeable STREAMLIGHT C4 LED STINGER? I own a stinger like so 180 lumens. It's bright trust me in direct sunlight I can see its beam on the ground. And it's focused. Dunno for the price the Fennix looks nice but do a comparison with a light of egual lumens. That would be the test.... Looking to buy a fennix I here they make a 205 lumens but, woud like to see it tested.

  • I tried responding with my video like you suggested, but I'm not sure it worked (I've never replied with a video before). Please be sure to reply to my video on the LD20 with your video as well. Is your light still running strong after a year?

  • Nice review. I was just wondering if this light came with a clip. I was fairly certain that it did. And is the clips positioning adjustable. I know that it can be carried with the bezel hanging out past the clip but I was wondering if the clip can go on the other end so just the power button hangs out.

  • @XGeneralBeanX The new versions of this flashlight have the pocket clip, mine is a year old and I bought it before the redesign. I haven't had a chance to check one of the new ones out in person so I am not sure if you can reverse the clip or not.

  • @hathcocked The newest version's clip cannot be reversed. One thing that is best about the newest version is the redesigned body that lets you wrap your fingers around the light and still make a comfortable solid fist if you need to use it in a self defense setting. The ones like yours do the same but its kind of an evolutionary improvement. The newest ones also have square threads.

  • @funkydunky1 I'd love to try one of the newer versions out but this one keeps working so well I can't find any excuse lol. Thanks for the info on the differences between the older and newer models.

  • @hathcocked I hear you on that! Mine isn't the latest anymore either they came out with a better Led than the Q5 right after I bought mine.

  • Ty for this video. Going to be picking it up on Amazon for 50USD!

  • Glad you found the video useful. The current version is even better with the redesigned body and pocket clip. I am sure it will serve you well.

  • My dog once bite and pee on my LD20. It still works! The pee didn't leak inside!

  • I really like my LD20 and think it is a way better value than SureFire or some of the others. Like you said, a lot of light for the money. One thing I noticed though was when I used Duracell Ultras, trying to get a bit more kick, I lost the stage one 9 lumen output mode. With the Duracell Ultras the light started at the second stage 47 lumen mode and would not go into the stage 1 mode. When I switched back to regular batteries, everything was normal again. Its a great, high value light.

  • That can happen because of the increased power from the lithiums. They are still the batteries to use IMO because of their storage life and the extra boost they give you. I have been using eneloops lately in the light and keeping some disposable lithiums in the car for backup.

  • @hathcocked

so what do you think? normal duracells will work well?

  • @HarseyAirRanger Yep they work perfectly fine. You get a little bit of a boost from better batteries but most of the time I use whatever I can afford.

  • @HarseyAirRanger

    thanks nice review

  • It depends on what you want it for. The LD20 has far superior throw. I don't consider the halo to be overly pronounced. I think it may be more noticeable because of the increase in brightness over the l2d. Sorry to hear that you are unhappy with it.

  • how many flashlights do you have that you could switch up in your edc? I would have 3-4 lights for 3 different situations and reasons because you never know when your everyday task light might screw up, so consequently you'd want to take out your primary SHTF light as backup, i dont know thats just my perspective

  • For EDC I have 2 LD20's. One on me and another I keep in my car with fresh batteries and the red/white filters.I also keep some chemlight's in my trunk. You have to draw the line at some point as far as redundancy goes.

  • It's a great light, I have recommended it here on youtube and to many friends in real life. I have never heard a single complaint.

  • thank you.

  • Does everyone use the fenix bike mounts w/ it or something else. I'm trying to decide on a light and because this one has a bike light and AA batteries. Those pro's are almost to much to ignore. EXCELLENT reveiw and COMMENTS. thanks

  • The man to talk to about mounting a fenix light to a bike is HawaiiIceMan, if you send him a personal message I am sure he would have some insight for you. Thanks for watching!

  • @conarl1 fenix sells bike mounts for $10 i have the bike mount and use it with my ld 20

  • What model is that MaxPedition holster?

  • It's the Maxpedition 5 inch Flashlight Sheath.

  • Save your money guys... these lights are optimized for 2500 mAh Nimh Rechargeable batteries. You're not going to see any extra benefits when you use lithiums. And don't even bother with Alkaline batteries, all you will get is SHARPLY reduced run times and a non functional turbo mode.

  • UPDATE: I don't much about batteries but putting those Walgreen Heavy Duty AA's Alkalines suck. Esp. tonight when I was on a night ride at 90 lumens...died after an hour. I had 2 spare ones but i just said screw it and went back home before they would run out.

  • Yeah I have used the cheaper batteries in the past and not had the best run times. I think it pays to get higher quality ones unless the deal on the cheap batteries is so good you can overlook it. Rechargeables might be the best option for your usage.

  • Yeah, I spent the last hour doing homework on batteries, not just AA's but Everyone keeps pointing to Eneloops and the Enegizer Lithium E2s. I got 20 more Walgreens AA before I switch over. Talk about expensive Enegizers.

  • The Walgreen Heavy Duty batteries are NOT alkalines. They are the OLD lead batteries. They are just a cheap trick that Walgreens uses to get people to spend money in their store. NEVER buy their Heavy Duty 9v for use in a smoke alarm. It will die in less than a month... I was a manager at Walgreens for 8 years...

  • good to know mate! I remember using them in my toys back in the early 90's..no wonder i cried...a lot.

  • what batterys do you thing is better AA or CR123A I AM Thinking LD 20 Or PD 30

  • I prefer AA because they are cheap and easy to find. You can't go wrong either way, both lights are great.

  • i have a surefire that runs on 123s and i cant afford to use it with how much fox hunting i do ... i think im going to sell it for a ld20 so i am not afraid to use it due to the cheeper batterys plus it is also brighter if you want it to be IMO i would not but a light running on 123 again

  • Yeah I feel the same way. If you use your lights a lot AA's are the way to go. You can't beat a rechargeable AA battery setup for cost effectiveness.

  • I was wondering Hathcocked, what batteries do you run on the LD20?

  • Whatever I can afford at the time lol. Usually just standard alkaline energerizers, if I have the extra money when it's time to replace them I'll go the lithium route. Even with standard alkaline batteries it is plenty bright.

  • saw this video and others on YT, got one for my bike. Great video!

  • Very cool, I am sure it will serve you well. Did you also get the bike mount?

  • I got 2 cheap made in Hong Kong one for 1.89 + 3.00 for S&H each. Its adjustable because I also have the TK11R2. Going to dual them together.

  • Cool man, that's going to be some pretty powerful lighting on your bike.

  • Yup. I'm also buying a TA21 so ill have a variable light on the bike as well. Don't how i'm gunna put all these lights on a carbon road bike with a Garmin Edge 705 on there too haha. If you are wondering why so many lights...Ill be having them on diff angles

  • I never question overkill, better to have it then not at all. Sounds like a pretty capable rig. You should add a camera mount on there some place and do some videos.

  • I do, one of the mounts I have was made from reflector brackets and on the mounting ring for the handle bars has a bolt that is fit and long enough for my Flip Video. I will get a video up soon.

  • Nice!

  • Good information. I have considered buying one of the 1AA versions (LD10). Thanks for posting.

  • Glad it was useful to you. I have been checking those out myself lately. The 2 AA lights can be a bit cumbersome at times.

  • I just ordered one on ebay for $55 total w/ shipping (8-26-09). I saw another dealer with them for $57 & some for $60. I got a diffuser for $6.50.

Best flashlight for the money. Can't beat using AA batteries. I also ordered some NI-MH batteries. They test out better than regular alkaline and will last in a stored flashlight. Eneloop are good but their chargers are junk. Get either a Duracell CEF23DX4N or Kodak K6200 charger & just order battery packs. Amazon has both.

  • Congrats on the purchase! I still carry mine in my EDC and it has never let me down. The cost and availability of AA's is a huge + to this light I agree.

  • great choice of light. it is awesome!

just a tip. i use recharbables for it but when you do the same, just make sure you use cells with equal charges or pressure will build up inside, making the rubber switch balloon. you can also just opt to make a small piercing on it using a small pin.

  • Great Vid! Well worth $60.00 I do wish they offered a model with just 3 settings, like Super Bright, Bright and Strobe. I still use my as a weapon light, It's home is allways next to whatever .45ACP I have next to my bed. Great review, I seriously need to come out of my shell more often, sorry I missed this one.

  • I leave it on turbo all the time these days. When I reach for the LD20 It's usually because I heard a noise outside I need to investigate. I have the Sig Sauer STL 100 on my 556. I still need to toss a light on the Rem 870. I want to get that surefire grip but I just don't have the cash right now. I am getting ready to buy a Sig P250 Compact.

  • AH, I want one of those surefire lights for my TPS, one day. Anything Sig is going to be a winner. That pricetag is a heavy hitter though. I love my P220, it feels like it was made for my hand. I know where to get affordable 1 inch rings for the TK series if your looking. I have one on my Carbon-15 9mm, lights up the target like daytime.

  • Yeah send the link to those rings via personal message if you could. Thanks!

  • Nice review man! I just got the TK40 in the mail, and wow.

I am looking for an EDC light now. THinking about the PD30 or the Nitecore D10..

Anyway, thanks for the sweet vids!

  • I hope you plan on doing a TK40 review, that is one sick light. The PD30 and D10 are both awesome lights. My next light purchase might be a Nitecore just for some variety.

  • Yeah, I will do a review. I don't have much for comparison though.

As for Nitecore, I like the D10's piston drive.

  • My flashlight just came in and I love it!

  • Glad to hear you are happy with it!

  • They say you can always go brighter, but how bright do we need a flashlight unless we are going to blind a bear?

  • Yeah I agree, I rarely use any brightness above the medium setting.

  • That Maxpedition Sheath, how much did you get it for with shipping? Also does it fit nice and tight in the sheath?

  • I believe I paid $23 for it. It fits very securely.

  • Thanks for a clean and honest review, I just ordered one myself.

  • I am sure it will serve you well. Thanks for commenting.

  • 5 Star Review. Can you leave the primary setting at 180 Lumens? How easy is it to go from the 180 Lumen mode to strobe? I will carry mine to enhance the use of my pistol in poor lighting conditions. Thank you.

  • Yes you can. If you leave the bezel twisted to the left as soon as you turn it on it's at 180 lumens, you tap the switch one more time to go into strobe mode. I use one of the smaller Fenix lights with my pistol, works well.

  • Which Fenix light do you suggest for pistol use?

Also, it looks like this light would fit in cargo pants or a front pocket. Is that right or do you have to have a carry case?

  • It fits fine in a pants pocket or cargo pocket but it does take up a pretty good amount of space. I carry my LD20 in a Maxpedition flashlight sheath on my belt. I have a Fenix P3D mounted on the accessory rail of my pistol. I like the smaller more compact lights on a pistol to keep the weight down.

  • Good review. Do you still like the light now that you had it for a bit? Looks like you got a red filter accessory, good quality? Did you get any of the other ones?

    Cheers

  • I carry the LD20 on a daily basis and love it. I sent the one shown in the review with my buddy who deployed to Afghanistan. I loved the light so much I bought myself another one to replace it. I have bought the white and the red wand accessories and they work great for their intended purpose.

  • are you worried about the fact that you have to constantly replace the bulb?

    i like coast tac lights

  • The Fenix LD20 is led based and they last 50 thousand hours or more. There is no bulb that ever needs to be replaced.

  • The red wand isn't to make it look like a flare. It's to save your Night Vision.

  • I'm fully aware of white light being poor for night vision. Many sites refer to the red diffuser as a traffic wand. I used it in that capacity 2 days ago, there was a roll over accident 4 houses down the street from me. It worked well to direct traffic. I also popped a couple chem lights around the wreck, made for an effective combo.

  • thanks for the great review..

i buyed one too after some searching...i should get it in the next few days...

i am sure it will fulfill my expectation

I first thought about buying the surefire 6p defender... but why the hell are they all using these 123A batteries ??? expensive, explosive and nowhere to get....

    greets from germany

    ps. nice gloves ^^

  • I am glad you found the review useful. I liked the LD20 so much I bought another one if that tells you anything. The Surefire's are nice lights but I agree, give me regular batteries.

  • whats with the gloves? :) Thinking about ordering an LD 20, how's the LED alignment on yours? I've soon lots of reviews where the LED is a little off on lots of these.

  • lol everyone asks me about the gloves, when Nutnfancy wears gloves in a review no one says a thing. I just don't like my hands being the focal point of the video.

The LED alignment was fine on my first ld20. The second one has yet to arrive so I can't speak on that.

  • fenix, the kickassity of light

  • Just ordered this from Brightguy. Seems like an awesome light I hope it throws really far

  • Nice! I'm sure you will be pleased with it.

  • Got it on my belt right now. This is a great bright light. Lovin it.

  • Glad to hear you like it! I am sure it will serve you well.

  • Question do the batteries in your light wiggle around a little?

  • There is a slight wiggle to it yes. No big deal but you do notice it sometimes.

  • Great review! I ordered a LD20 today, and can't wait for it to get here.

I was going to wait and see if Fenix will come out with a LD20 with the new R2 upgrade (like the T11), but I just had to have one now.

  • Thanks! Yeah I tend to get in that holding pattern as well but at some point you just have to pull the trigger and order. Let me know what you think about the light when you get it.

  • i just ordered this light from ebay :) cant wait for it to get here

  • Let me know what you think when it arrives. I absolutely love mine.

  • yeah i got it today :) its awsome!! maybe ill make a video

  • Glad to hear you like it!

  • good review, not sure about the gloves though

  • Thanks for the input.

  • nice review, for 60.00 bucks it's worth it.

    5/5

  • Thanks.
