  • What string guage do you use? and is that the standard bridge? cheers :)

  • What's that white pedal being used at 0:40?

  • about as shoe gaze as miley cyrus

  • I don't know what is and isn't technically Shoegaze, but I thought the popup text was hilarious. Not in terms of what Shoegaze is, but enjoyed it for the pure surprise that it was. At any rate, I have a DLS v2 on the way from a trade on TGP!

  • if this is shoegaze, i'm married to toni halliday

  • aweasome

  • @o0FfoX0o What gives Shogaze it's sound is particularly the "wall of sound" effect its known for. ALL Shoegazing bands use this archetype, otherwise they wouldn't be known as Shoegaze.

  • @Selket59 Oh now I get it! The music critics derived the term "Shoegaze" not from staring at shoes, stoping on pedals while performing, but from the "wall of sound". Interesting, why didn't they call it "Soundwall" then?

  • @Selket59 to be honest only My Bloody Valentine incorporate the wall of sound effect and only to an extent. the only band you can maybe count as shoegazer type that does this properly is Spiritualized. the wall of sound effect you're referring to in the early 90s indie bands is more of a 'wall of fuzz', and even then, a lot of the bands that were grouped under that 'genre' didn't employ a wall of anything. shoegazing means nothing more than looking at yer shoes.

  • @Selket59 Not true, Swervedriver never used the "wall of sound" yet they're still regarded as a seminal Shoegaze band, besides the term is silly, none of the original movement likes the term.

  • what pre are you useing with the royer?

  • Yeah, tell a company that makes boutique effects pedals that they don't know what shoegaze is.

  • Still sounds bloody good, no matter what the sound is. And I ain't going to lie, this reminds me more of Post-Punk than Shoegaze, but I don't really give a fuck, because it could fit either way. Sounds fantastic.

  • @catalinbread totally agree

  • Shoegaze or not...that was freakin' cool.

  • Very MBV-esque sound, I dig it a lot :D

  • really, this ain't shoegaze. not saying it sucks, but yeah, erm, NOT shoegaze.

  • @narudh What is shoegaze then? :)

  • @catalinbread I guess none of these "bros" have ever listened to swervedriver. erm.

  • @catalinbread Listen to The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride. They all compose a "wall of sound". This isn't Shoegaze. To actually create shoegaze, you have to create a "wall of sound".

  • @catalinbread washy walls of ambient noise where you cant distinguish one note from another

  • @catalinbread you didn't have drums/bass/vocals... it could have been shoe gaze if orchestrated properly... some people like to troll on how this isn't a composition and ignore that it is a pedal demo...

  • @catalinbread listen the jesus and mary chain. thats`s shoegaze.

  • @narudh I think you will find it is, Shoegaze is fairly non specific its just music that has the use of a lot of effects, it was a term nme created after the manchester scene died out and they needed somthing new and exciting to write about.

  • talky talk

  • Sounds a bit like Sonic Youth to me, but what do I know. This video makes me want a Jazzmaster, which is crazy 'cos I just bought a Les Paul...

  • @greasykitchen FAILURE...

  • 8 people have never gazed at their shoes.

  • I don't know if it's shoegaze or not, but i like this great video!

  • This is really nice! What tuning are you using in this?

  • Ye old princeton reverb reissue hey. How does it go ?

  • @tritonbionico I just realised i failed.... its also on the bass vi and the fender xii

  • actually the last 2 minutes

  • Also this seems shoegaze enough to me....... some parts were a bit meh but that last minute or so was gold!!!

  • As aforementioned, not very shoegazy but wow dude...so creative and awesome. No points lost in my book!

  • What is that blue pedal on the left? The text looks like "Chodrive"??

  • @MAJ0RM1KE

    SIB Echodrive

  • Sounds cool but this isn't shoegaze at all... XD

  • just a couple of quick question: what is the model of that trem? is that trem topload? it uses springs in a cavity like the floyd rose? do you know if it exist for seven string guitars? Thank you!

  • @tritonobionico its a fender floating trem featured only on fenders jaguar and jazzmaster. Under the cover is a lever parallel to the body with a spring underneath it... unlike a floyd rose in which the lever is perpendicular and the springs run parallel to the body.

  • Awesome tones man, great instrumental.

  • 3:39 was so BADASS

  • Not shoegaze, but this is still pretty freakin awesome!

  • What amp?

  • I play shoegaze, and this video really helped sell me on the pedal. Sounds awesome on the crunchy part of the main riff with the glide guitar stuff.

Probably a stupid question, but what tuning is this in?

  • oh God...this is fuc*in amazing! :)

  • tabs?! for the intro!

  • tabs?!

  • This video has convinced me i need a haunting mids fuzz...crap.

  • That's cool how you got your friend to lay on the floor and change your pedals so we can all see them like that!

  • SOLD!

  • Cool pedals man, I'm thinking about ordering an echo unit soon.

  • You should make this into an actual song, it's so badass

  • This is shoegaze.

But more like swervedriver's style of shoegaze, as opposed to the MBV kind everyone thinks is the ONLY shoegaze.

  • what's the pedal to the right of the heliotrope?

  • Great tone what pedals are you using in this vid?

  • that od would sound epic with spring reverb or a dd7

  • I would call this pedal gazing. I would also say it was NEAT!

  • Love your playing. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Not shoegaze

  • lol, the captions..... I have no idea what half these comments are on about, It sounds totally like those Creation Records bands from the early 90's!! Howard is a fine guitarist too, I wish I was in a band with him..... :)

  • Wow, great effects! What is making that surf guitar like "whipping" sound after 2:50 and near the end, is it the guitar or the pedal? Compare it with the beginning of the Venture's, Walk Don't Run 64, and you'll know what I mean.

  • @FellOnEarth cut and paste to see the youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=q7MDoJHkxNQ

  • EPIC FAIL for shoegaze-y style because I am some superiorly douche-tastic guy who will probably never get on a stage and actually play in front of people. I will critique because I cannot do anything else but sit in my room and play for my masturbation sock. Gotta go, mom's calling me for dinner.

  • @castillodeluxe Yes, clearly that is the case. Hi there. My name is Douche Bag Youtube White Knight and I love to defend videos from people I'll never meet (maybe they'll give me a dollar if I do! I hope! Weee!). I, too, am keenly aware that any sort of criticism results from A) Jealousy or B) Self-Loathing and not from the fact that shoegaze doesn't consist of wanky wah guitar solos and WAY SICK ring mod riffage. Oops. Gotta go. Another grown-ass man needs my anonymous defending.

    Fart.

  • Sorry, didn't see the credits! But still, are those stock pickups?

  • @DarkJinx257 Yup stock pickups and electronics. I have no plans to change 'em out!

  • Which Jazzmaster is that? And are those stock pickups? The most amazing sound I've ever heard in my life, truly!

  • Sounds like there must be some shoegaze authorities in the audience...

  • @mikefiore6 sounds like! I called it shoegaze cause there are a lot of pedals on the board to look at... And Howard channeled some Swervedriver-esque stuff.

  • @catalinbread

It's true. This sounds a lot like Swervedriver

  • Definitely feeling some Swervedriver love here!!!

  • nicceeee

  • Are these pickups P-90´s?

  • @sergioguitar No, they're just regular single coils in a bigger housing. But they aren't P-90s.

  • I need a Jazzmaster now...And a DLS also...

  • yeah i was gonna say a swervedriver sound-

    nice-

  • @delsoul2003 Ah OK! Ride doesn't really sound like Lush doesn't really sound like Catherine Wheel doesn't really sound like MBV doesn't really sound like Swervedriver... As far as I can remember living through the period and looking back there wasn't a rule book to follow.

  • @catalinbread dude, i support you, these guys should just chill up a bit

  • @catalinbread agreed sir. And in fact i mean I hear a lot of Catherine Wheel and especially swervedriver in that - if they're not shoegazer nothing is. People think shoegaze is like turning the delay up to stupid and zoning out to bad tinkly little melodies.

  • @koolami268 true mate, what most people would consider "Shoegaze" today is really just a form of ambient music

  • @catalinbread Proably because Lush turned into brit pop after like 1 album, Catherine Wheel turned into schlocky alt rock after their debut, etc.

Please don't do this disingenuous "no two bands sound EXACTLY the same" bullshit.

  • @AnimalHouseVetVideos Genre dicing or debating with the enforcement gestapo is boring. Critics coined the phrase "shoe gaze" in a derogatory way in the first place, now arm chair historians come along to defend it as if there was a formula to begin with. All shoe gaze to me means is looking at your feet while playing because you have too many pedals down there.

  • Comment removed

  • this is not shoegaze bro... come on now. you do have talent though!

  • @luke631 OK Bro!

  • I'm not one to say what is shoegaze and what isn't. For me you've got the right axe and the vibe/sound right! :-) This vid is probably gonna sell some DLS's and a few Jazzmiesters too. Oh yeah, and I like that Swervedriver FTW comment! +1,000,000!

  • i meant the dirty little secret this shoegaze sicks ars

  • thats it ill buy myself one

  • great sound!

  • What is the blue box to the left? Oh and I forgot how massive the Haunting Mids sounds. Good use of the heliotrope.

  • SIB Echodrive... Freaking fantastic analog delay.

  • Thank you sir for exposing me to this unobtainable fuzz pedal that is the haunting mids. You bastard.

  • Good stuff but not really Shoegaze...

  • This video not only sold me on the Dirty Little Secret (I since bought two), but it's half the reason I bought a Jazzmaster, too.

  • not very shoegazing....

  • @caiaum2 Are you serious? How can this not be shoegazing... he never looks up from his feet.

Which is the original definition of shoegazing by the way.

  • Love it!!!

I call this style "Techno Surf Metal".

  • Swervedriver FTW!!!

  • Yes Sir

  • @catalinbread Rave Down!

  • Its shoegazing

  • This is epic, I love shoegaze/noise rock stuff. I'd love to know how you're tuned.

  • its probably open g.

    DGDGBD

  • Oh cool, thanks for finding out.

  • @brenan6 its DADGAD

  • Best use of a ring modulator I've ever seen. Great Job!

  • @ilovemyfender1 Heliotrope!

  • Shit, that's good! Epic sound ;)

  • Great use of the tremolo, it provides a lots of sensitivity.

The DLS seems to really respect the Jazzmaster tone and dynamics!

Are you satisfied by the Mastery Bridge?

  • Yup, the Mastery is fantastic! I haven't had to tune the guitar since this video was shot 5 months ago. :)

  • Sounds awesome! What microphone did you use?

  • Royer 121

  • G R E A T ! Which jazzmaster is that (classic player, JRI,etc) and which pickups?

  • AVRI stock pickups Mastery Bridge!

  • AVRI for sure.

  • Great sound!!!!!!

  • that sounds HUGE.....nicely done!

    bobby d

  • What tuning is this in?

  • You know, I don't actually know. :)

  • Drop D.

  • drop c or drop d, i think

  • ah thanks for the answer! didn't look at the credits...

  • 8^)

  • It says what the pedals are in the credits. ;)

  • i'm as curious as you, man

  • love to know the what the two non-Catalinbread pedals are

  • Wah looks like an RMC, the red pedal is a haunting mids, but I don't know about the last one.

  • what pedal is the leftmost one?

  • SIB (analog) Echodrive.

  • I. Want. One.

  • fuckin' great!

  • Cool demo!

  • Sounds sweet guys, nice work as always!!!
