OH... Loved Chris Larkin! He was a very important part of the Vels. Love the video and saw them pretty much every time they played until they signed an contract and went to the Islands to record....
I remember hearing this in demo version, I think on WXPN U of P radio, and really liked it. I've never had money for records and I didn't like the overproduced sound of the released version but this video has a rough quality though I doubt it's the demo. Thank you so much for bringing this back to us who remember it.
The VELs second album is one of my top favorites of all time. Heard Alice "DeSoto" (Cohen) still performs her own music, totally different, raw style.
Funny, I remember when this song first came out - and you know - you don't see the male lead singer of the band at all on this video - Chris Larkin did the male vocal parts - he never got the credit that he deserved - may he rest in peace!
WOW.. I can die in peace now. I have been looking for this song for 25 years. At one point I figured I had just imagined the whole thing. Hey it was the 80's.. Even after over a year of listening to Siruis 80's they still never played it. THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!
Wow! This was the last remaining song from the 1980s that I had searched high&low for and I found the video here! Very cool. I LOVE this song and remember it fondly. Great melodies, cool rap and a sweet song!
I was just going thru old VHS videos from Rock America and thought You Tube needed this rare gem. Thanks for putting it up and RIP Chris. His family grew up across street from mine in Bala Cynwyd.
This really brings me back to the day...I owned a bar on South Street back in the early 80s, "Bigilows!" The Vels played there many a Thursday night. Charlie, Chris and Alice, three peice pop. Man, they were the best and one of my personal favorites! Should have been huge...as for Mr. Larkin, Chris was a great guy and a true talent. He will be greatly missed.
Wow- I just heard about Chris' passing. Essra Mohawk told me, and after knowing Chris from the South Street music scene in the early 80's was saddened to hear the news. I remember The Vels back when they played at J.C. Dobbs. I was a part of the music scene and I remember being very drawn to Chris because he was such a nice guy!
What a great song and band. Seeing Alice, Charlie and Chris perform brings me back; and now Chris is part of that big band of Philly performers in the sky with his old friends and bandmates including Joey Wilson, Alan Mann, and Richard Johnson to name just a few. My heart sank when I heard the news but I'll never forget his SMILE !!!! He lives on in the hearts of everyone who loved him
Chris Larkin RIP - Keys , vocals and songwriter of the Vels died on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, age 55, of complications arising from pneumonia. Chris was a long-time composer and performer in the Philadelphia music scene, known for his creativity, compassion, and kindness.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a service on Saturday, December 15, 2007, at 6:30 P.M. at Gloria Dei Old Swedes' Church, Columbus Blvd. and Christian St., Philadelphia.
i forgot the name of that girl who was the VJ. V-66 was the station where i 1st saw videos such as "One Night In Bangkok", "Yo Little Brother", "Obsession" & "Un Alone" in early 1985. I have the 12 inch record to "Look My Way" as well as the album titled "Velocity". Im a huge music fan and collector since i was 7. And i still have the V-66 square bumper sticker.
wow , im 34 years old and i remember seeing this for the 1st time in early 1985 when i was 12 and when Boston used to have this video station called V-66. Ive been looking for this for a long time. The guy in this video sounds like the guy from The Human League.
Where was this shot? Raleigh? Alice has such a killer voice. Does she still have it? What's she doing these days? Where is she? Married, living in Oregon, three kids and a fence? Why did Mercury pull their support of this band? So many questions.
And just when you think you're the only one in the whole world that has ever heard this song, here it is. God I miss the 80's...ok, yes, pure cheese, but something this unusual would never see the light of day nowadays right? Thanks so much for this post. Good times!!
THIS was the epitome of the 80's.. and it nearly brought me 2 tears with such happy memories. While this is the FIRST time I've ever seen this video, I can admit I have 5 copies of the actual album.. and while now, it sounds quite dated, I still love to listen and remember how over-the-top we 80's kids really were. THIS is priceless!
Car crash-screamin' tires... I've seen this video once in the past 12 years at the Parliament House bar in Orlando FL and now here it is in all it's glory! One of my fave 80's bands lives on! Thank you for this posting!!
Good call - MAJOR improvement - and still, a gloriously pastel/madonna-bananarama fashion/espirit-commercial/singing/dancing/(bad white girl) rapping extravaganza that deserved better than its No. 59 (or 62 or 65, i can't recall, no coffee yet this AM) placing......
Puppies in the pet shop don't bite - and if you can't get down get up......
