I think enda kenny is closer to the cosgrave era, in castlebar he made the comment that he does not take himself seriously but that he takes his job very seriously, the same comment was made by liam cosgrave in 1975, a very interesting point i think
@goodbyeIreland - as you may know, his father William was as big a bastard as the brits on how he dealt with the true Republicans who didn't stray from the 1916 Irish Proclaimation.
Probably one of the most ignorant men that ever led a Govt. here. His Govt. were one of the most unpopular in the states history, including a notorious anti-semite as a minster, who praised Germany for "routing the Jews". There shambolic Govt. forced people into the hands of Jack Lynch's FF in unprecedented numbers. Thankfully his political legacy ends with him, as his son was charged with political corruption.
@jacksjohnny Really? I don't think an English political leader would be allowed to get away with such language against the Irish in the same way. Funny how nobody had a problem with it really. Oh by the way, Arnold's biography of Haughey got it right about him.
@TheChapaqua Have you noticed the hate filled comments here directed at Cosgrave by Republican sympathisers? Cosgrave saved the Republic of Ireland from the huge violence, which engulfed the north. We owe him, his government, the guards and army a huge debt of gratitude.
@jacksjohnny I notice that you never resp[onded to my point. As I've always said about the Irish, very good at talking, useless though when it comes to listening.
i agree with you there if he said that today he'd probally have to resign its so amazing how people got away with been so rasicst at one time and didnt get pulled on it if there was an irish equivliant of the bnp he'd no doubt be a member
Perhaps Cosgraves comments were ignorant.Perhaps his ploy, muddying the journalists democratic right to criticise political bodies,by associating their work with a 'sure what would they know/us versus the blow ins' mentality, was just plain wrong.Perhaps to have such a mentality typifying Irish politics for as long as it did was manipulative(playing on voters romantic visions of an Irish collective) and undemocratic (preventing any real changes to inbred politikin')
Long live the memory of General O Duffy and the Blueshirt movement. The saved Ireland from Leftist republican terrorism.

@jacksjohnny Yes, just like the Irish in England, 'blow-ins.

@TheChapaqua Cosgrave was referring to one persistent critic in the media not to all English people.

@TheChapaqua Cosgrave was not criticising the English as a people. The same journalist himself was quite good at dishing out criticism.
