You can disagree all you want but there's a foundation that's been laid by the forerunners/stalwarts and when a band drifts too far from that, it becomes debatable if it's even metal or not. To some fans, metal is tradition, orthodox and textbook. It's basically broken down to a science and can be categorized as such. We all know(or should know) the difference between black and death metal. We can determine by the riffing, structure and vocal presence. Therefore, it's going by the book.
