and at the end of this song... "Season cycle moving round and round.. pushing life up from a cold dead ground.. it's growing greeeen".. you know what I mean lol
wow i thought the picture was a women givin' a man a blowjob... wtf.... it's just a flute... i must be brainwashed by all that shiddy crap pop songs on tv like lady blehgblehg...
I like it- it's more of a "I'm ok, I was sad and got better. What's done is done and I've made my peace. Please stop with the damn pity." song than the general "woe is me, life is pain." like most lost-love-ditties.
@probrojeffro I couldn't have commented on this any better than this. Thanks ~ Its nice to know there is another person who understands my musical thoughts.
I simply love the suspended dissonance of the final unresolved chord. You want it to complete but it just hangs there almost maddeningly, which goes perfectly with the song's almost frantic mood - like some kind of lunatic sorrow.
Dave Gregory, their guitar player, arranged the strings on this song...absolutely brilliant---he's one of the most overlooked guitarist and musician ever..
Todd Rundgren deserves a LOT of credit for the brilliance of this record...all those little orchestral arrangements were exclusively his (although a bit Beatlish, but it's O.K. to steal from the Beatles, because everybody knows you're doing it, and it's like borrowing from old standards). What would this song sound like without the strings? Dave Gregory said Todd should give himself writing credit, but he said he thought production credit was good enough.

Layers of rich arrangements, on what could otherwise be a Syd Barrett rant!
Exquis!

I've always heard the spirit of the Beatles in XTC's Skylarking. George Martin orchestrations abound.
Skylarking is a bona fide CLASSIC!!

Only Rook surpasses this. So incredibly British, pompous and beautiful.

Song writing to the nth degree. Andy Partridge is amazing.

Definitely conveys the thought of "misery." Irritating waste of talent and production time.

I love the composition, arrangement, "texture", musicianship (is that a word?), production--every aspect and every note!
Love this whole album!

Great XTC song. It's like their own "Eleanor Rigby".
