The Japanese cars have cut corners in design and quality control. They are coasting on their previously well deserved reputation for quality and reliability. They need to make money too. I have been a mechanic for years in an all makes repair shop and have watched the Asian cars fall to the level of the American cars, sometimes lower.

Kia now makes arguably good looking cars that perform well in their segments but are still some of the worst built cars I have ever seen. Ford is doing well.

That 4cyl in the focus is a mazda engine. Most of fords 4cyl engines today are mazda's. I'd rather have the focus over corolla and civic. A friend of mine has an 07 civic and the suspension already has issues. I've seen a subaru hit a focus and the subaru's front end was pushed all the way in, the focus, just a dented fender and broken headlight lens. :)

Let me guess, you're in the UK right? Everywhere else in the world (except maybe France) it's pronounced coop. You have to have the accent aigu on the e to make it coo-pay. I would be too...but I don't think its the same one that they have in the UK...I had a school project to do a brochure design, and I chose the UK RS model, and in my research, they said that they aren't even bringing it over here anymore. Apparently it's not cost effective because it costs about $40k-$45k. Makes me sad to hear that...its an awesome car!

Honda design their VTEC engines to take that kind of pressure. The S2K also reved to 9k and Honda has made 30mil+ engines in the last 10 years or so and not one has gone wrong.

@extremegoped It is actually 8K rpm. It's more expensive for a reason. Simply because it is built to a higher quality standard than the focus. It keeps it's value far better and is safer than the focus.

The si is meant for racing and the four door barely beats the focus. the focus takes all the other models, i've driven this exact model for a year and have taken every civic model except the si coupe and it even depends what year, stock older ones even lose. as for the corolla the only one i've lost to is the sport so yeah, get your shit straight before you say stuff.

I move cars for Hertz, so I get to drive all models and makes. I'm here to tell you that the Focus blows away the competition including the Civic and Corolla. The focus has more comfortable seats, a better designed dash; an overall much better interior.

When you punch the pedal the 2.0 kicks ass! It will easily outrun the foreign makes. I know, been there, done that!

Before you plunk down the cash for a foreign car, try the Focus. Believe me you'll be pleasantly surprised, I was!

My mom kept saying good things about her 08 SE Sedan, and made me drive it one day. I took it to about 90 on the highway and was pretty impressed by everything about it really. It could definitely use more power, but the suspension is alright. It corners pretty well and is very predictable.

Sync did it for me though...apparently i'm a sucker for technology.

i have this same one, blue with the black grill. this mf flies on the freeway. its rediculous how fast you can go in the matter of 2 seconds, and its such a smooth ride. i never feel any bumps on the road, minus speed bumps. plus at night all the nobs & spedometer & what not's light up in an aqua blue color. i love it. i wouldnt recommend getting it, then you'll have the same car as me. so fuck off.

I agree the euro version is better, and a different car class, but I wouldn't call this ugly. I would've gotten one if my '93 Taurus was eligible for the cash for clunkers program. But, it wasn't b/c the govt. didn't change adjust its standards as the EPA years ago. When my car came out, it was rated at 21 mpg city. Nowadays it'd be more like 17 mpg city (especially with the 220,000 miles) which would've made it eligible. Damn govt.

Ford goofed. The roof mounted spoiler is just plain ugly and looks adolescent in nature; the trunk mounted counterpart looked much better. The darkened headlight/tailight surround is supposed to look 'sporty', but in reality it looks like sh*t. Black grill? Cheap. The recessed fog lamps ARE an improvement I can live with, but they're overshadowed by the less attractive aspects of this refresh. VERDICT: Get the sedan, particularly in SEL trim. :-)

I just don't understand coupes. The back seats are almost pointless without a door in my opinion. You can't get anyone in there without getting out and you can't use the seats for groceries or anything else. In my opinion, they're just not functional. A 4 door sedan or hatchback where the back seats can go down is much more functional. Of course, to each their own!

You have any idea how tough the frame of the Ford Focus is? I've heard of a Focus in a head on collision with a truck and winning, that is, the plastic bumper, etc, were smashed but the frame was in perfect condition, so was the radiator. That was something the designers did in favor of the WRC (better handling), along with fully independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes, do you get that in a Corolla? The mileage could use improvement, but I'd still feel safer in a Focus any day.

Small isn't the only factor. The Focus is an economy car and should get better mileage, but it is made in America. It seems that American cars, for the most part, don't get good mileage. We had an '07 Civic that got 38 mpg. We now have a Prius that gets 45-50mpg. If you want good mileage, you need to get Japanese.

my brother owns a 94 civic which gets a little more than me. My mother owns a 08 hybrid civic which has been getting about 45-50mph and my fathers piece of fucking shit impala that gets about 23.
