Please give their pets back to their original families. Yes, you fell in Love with their pet, but it's not yours; it has a family that couldn't bring their pet. You can adopt another beautiful pet from the shelter. You would be saving another life. Do the Right Thing. Thanks. <3
Randy Turner the lawyer in the movie is a horrible person. He is no animal lover. What should the woman have done? Left her mother in a wheel chair in the house and rescued the dog? She had to carry her mother in the wheel chair. The dog survived. The only reason she didn't get the dog back was because she didn't have money for a lawyer. If I adopted a Katrina dog and the true owner wanted it back, I'd give it back. I'd be very sad but I'd do the right thing. Randy works at Turner & McKenzie
Mine is such a good movie. Jesse and his dog J.J. were finally reunited in 2009, well after this film was released.
I believe that people who adopted Katrina animals did so partly because it made them seem heroic, gives them a certain cache. They never should have expected that their owners were deadbeats and were never coming back for their pets. It takes years to get back on one's feet after such a disaster!
I thought It said that the new owners of J.J. ran off with the dog after he got a lawyer and was about to get him back. Did that happen or did Jesse really get his pup back?

@songnight I don't think that all of the people who were adopting were doing it for an ego boost. We had thought about it, but our lease wouldn't allow any more pets than the ones we already had. The way we had understood it at the time, the dogs were coming from people who had in a lot of cases not survived. Obviously now we see that wasn't the case, but at the time it was thought that these were animals that really had no place else to go. We just love dogs!
This is heartbreaking. This makes my heart feel so heavy for those animals, and their owners. I know personally I would be torn up inside if this happened with my cat. I feel for these people.
Sadly, the situation in Katrina concerning the plight of the pet owners is absolutely real. The director was part of the relief efforts: that's where she captured the footage for this documentary.

Heartbreaking, you can watch this on Netflix. I never thought that someone may have wanted my adopted Duke back so desperately. He has since passed.

@ycatrcat After they ran off with the dog. Jesse got a lawyer who agreed to help him pro bono and nine months later, Jesse got J.J. back.
