When he sings "your lovely carcass caught my eye" it sounds JUST LIKE some other song... I can't put my finger on it though. Where is that melody from???????
Maybe a bit similar but way better than Rufus (ie he isn't monotone) and don't even mention Hugh Laurie in the same sentence! Anyway, Laurie's work came after this.
Love this and John Grant's stuff. The first bit does remind me of Hugh Laurie's 'Mystery' which is also ace, but a slightly different feel to it. Thoughts?
i cannot stop coming back to this song. this version is particularly wonderful on a grand piano. and the way his voice just cracks a bit with emotion at the end rounds off brilliantly an extraordinarily moving piece of work.
This album is one of the most under-appreciated of the last decade. One or two mediocre tracks, an incoherent structure/flow between songs, and lack of publicity are the only things holding it back from being one of the greatest albums of all time. Grant's voice and songwriting are some of the best out there. His stuff with the czars is also fantastic for those who haven't heard it.
This is such a beautiful song. So haunting. I've been listening to the rest of his album, Queen Of Denmark on Spotify, and there are a few other tracks on it that really stood out. A terrific new find. Yes, it reminds me a little bit of Rufus Wainwright whose music I love as well.
saw him supporting Midlake at the O2 academy in Liverpool.... don't think the venue or keyboard did him justice . He is such a big bear of a man he needs a really good stage :)
Saw him on Later with Jools Holland. He sang one song - 'I Wanna Go To Marz' (his favourite sweet shop when he was a kid). On the strength of that I caught his Edinburgh gig and I'm glad I did. He's a funny, thoughtful man - and THAT VOICE! Effortless and soaring. Ended the nite with 'Little Pink House', a song about his supportive and inspirational granny who lived in a little pink house with blue polka dots. In conservative Midwest America. Really. Respect to John, respect to his granny!
...I was pretty stunned by JG's performance recently, supporting Midlake (UK. Oxford)....he kinda reminded me of Eddie izzard, but really talented. His music sends shivers down my spine.....
so beautiful... love his voice!

I GOT IT! He totally got the chorus melody from Across the Universe! I wonder if he did that consciously.
