You know, its impossible to compare trumpeters... or any kind of musician. The fact that they were able to achieve what they did is amazing enough. Sure players now have higher ranges than Maynard did, but he was a pioneer for them. Its not about comparison, its about inspiration
@rdangelo Yeah, you are right. Just like how in earlier years Lynn Nicholson used to play all the extreme upper register stuff and later on Alan Wise. Stan was a great lead player though and always cool to see guys willing to spread the wealth. :)
This is my all time favorite recordings of this song. Maynard is a legend and always will be in our hearts. Maynard Ferguson is and always will be a legend. R.I.P. Maynard.
@StinkyCheeser What makes you think that Jaco would dislike it? There are a ton of arrangements, and this is probably one of the better, if not one of the best ones!
dude you're a horrible critic. Can't you just sit back and enjoy an awesome arrangement and get off your high horse where everything has to be perfect? that's what Jazz is all about, expression. You want perfection, go attempt to join the CSO or something. Jesus
3:19 dude looks like such a tool "look at me I played a high g" Sloppy outta tune high g at best.....slopped and smeared when everybody else is articulating....what a douche
yes, i have Maria from this show, but he did Rocky, Conquistador , Rocky2, Pagliacci on other Douglas shows that i have. Great stuff! i am fortunate to have over 80 hours of Video over the years. nothing like the BOSS. we will never see another one quite like him!
Definately later '77-'78. Maynard's hair is greyer and longer. Weather report did Birdland in '77. (Then Manhattan Transfer in '79. Both had hit recordings.) New Vintage, of course as stated by marv 40 came out in '77.
awsome line up is that Joe Mosello, I know that is stan mark on lead and dennis noday and ron tooley are also on trumpet, awsome tune, one of my faves
As usual, you come through with the good old clips. When was this from? It's the oldest Birdland I've seen: you can tell, because they're playing a it bit slower; also, Maynard had not yet gotten bored of holding out the whole note D in the main melody, and it sounds like he doesn't have the timing down yet for the end of the arrangement.
And who's in that trumpet section, by the way? I recognize Stan Mark, but that's it.
So odd... The Bari player is playing flute also o.o

Great cover even if it sound as if the end of the arrangement was "cut" for "broadcast timing reasons"
What was "the other side of Jerry Lewis" ?

Actually, Lewis and Maynard each "dueled" on a version of "C-Jam Blues" later in the show.
